  1. Not to be flippant, but if home-crowd booing was a deal-breaker, the only place that a major-leaguer could play might be Toronto, or maybe the Marlins.
  2. Death rattle. Goodbye Brewers 2008. I tried to be a good fan, really I did.
  3. What's the word that you use to describe the feeling when you look down and your pants are soaked in blood? Because that would be the word I'd like to use right now. On the plus side, maybe I'll grow faint and pass out before the Cubs series.
  4. I would be happy to wake up next Thursday with a one-game lead. I don't see that happening. Prove me wrong, for please, sirs.
  5. Yeah, that'd be great if the fans were the ones out there playing. Or even if every single Philly player and manager was a season ticket holding Eagle DIE HARD, that may cause a little distraction.Well, I'll ignore the tone here, since I don't think it's that controversial to suggest that an away team would rather play against smaller and less-fired-up crowds. Of course the Phillies will be focused. Sorry for sharing what I learned about the mood in Philly.
  6. So, word from a Philly friend is that this series is under-the-radar, it being Cowboys week. I hope that's the case and we can sneak out of there with a split. Also, I thought Moyer pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics.
  7. I seem to remember Piniella making similar comments managing the Mariners during the ALCS versus the Yankees. Wonder how that turned out. If anyone is going to scruple to such histrionics, I'd rather it be Simba, but he should do it in a low "Kill Bill" voice and puffing on a cigarillo so's that some of the call-ups wet their pants.
  8. Sorry for getting biographical, but in the span of 48-hours, my apartment floods, my power goes out, my water goes out, my car gets towed, I get stung by wasps, work goes nuts, my brother overdraws a check card I gave him and all's I want is a relaxing night with the Brewers and a nice steak. Well, the steak was ruined, the beer was warm. And then came that game, another "just when you think it couldn't get worse," game, part of the waking nightmare that is the Brewers September, another collapse, like and yet unlike other collapses presided over by the Scowling Skip'. I still want to root for them, really I do. But acceptance is an important part of grief, and seeing the look of doom in that team's eyes tells me all I need to know about how this year is going to end, darkness, bones bleaching in the dust, picked clean of carrion. I can see the snow swirls through the empty Miller Park lots already. All is lost. Edit: Okay, okay. I'm back. Let's win this one, CC. (Got my prescription re-upped.)
  9. firenedyost.com would become obsolete.
  10. Any attempts to watch both games were shortcircuited by the excitement of the Packers game. And then to switch over and see that death ship-Mein Gott.
  11. By the way, I wonder if BA reads this board. The other night, he let the crowd noise alone speak for CC getting out of a jam going in to a commercial break. I liked that a lot.
  12. Whatever your choice, you have to admit that the night could end badly. I've asked the gf not to come over tonight to prepare in the event of calamity. To a group of virulently opposed friends, I've been defending Thompson and Yost all summer with the "don't panic" oldies. Now, on a night like this, I am panicked, feeling weary and afraid, a Doubting Thomas of a fan. Saves me Aaron Rodgers. Saves me Dave Bush. Before the $+%+ crows three times, I'll click to whichever entertainment is making my sports psyche feel better.
  13. I'd put this in the "be careful what you wish for" category. With the MLB package, I hear much, much, much worse.
  14. Poor-to-mediocre defense. Bad approaches at the plate, contributing to poor clutch hitting. Weird management. And, dare I say, overall flatness. Not fun to watch. Not after we've come this far.
  15. I hope I'm not being redundant (computer's acting up), but I said it's nice to see how coolly CC is apparently dealing with this. "El Brazo Muerto" Zambrano would be foaming from his fat mouth.
  16. But...but...I LIKE Hart. Can't we keep him, pa?
  17. The Cards announcers seem to have a particularly hard time with Untuckedness, as would my late grandmother. There seems to me to be a lot of tsk-tsking done when you're on the losing end, be it at home run styling or sartorial norms. I don't think we're in any danger of gaining anything like the bad reputation had by the Cubs or their fans, but even if we did, thumping the stake in the heart of the Cardinals playoff chances is worth it. (And you know who they'll come rooting for if the Cubs manage to make it to the NLCS).
  18. I will say the amount of information that sports writers are spoon fed by the teams themselves would stun the average Joe. You could write a game story, for instance, without going to the game. Also, is it true that this guy was out front on the CC trade, because I seem to remember one from among the ESPN stable actually got it?
  19. Wait-are you saying that Counsell's going to hit a late-game homer to win it? If that happens let me know, so I can be sure to be careful of all the driverless cars emptied by The Rapture.
  20. Ron Santo's unseemly self-promotion seems right in line with the mystifying sense of entitlement that dominates much else about that wretched, losing franchise. And this is not to mention his unintelligible moanings, which make the quaint old racist Harry Caray in his three-decade twilight seem as concise as a Joseph Cotten Mercury Theater radio narration. I want the recordings of Santo's ridiculous and indulgent moan at the final out to the NLDS, when the Cubs lose to the Diamondbacks, to be distributed by the USDA, maybe as a way to keep coyotes and hyenas from livestock. Or it could be played at the back end of chili- or hot dog-eating festivals to induce regularity. Speaking of which, instead of induction to the Hall of Fame, maybe there's a malfunctioning Illinois toll road toilet that would serve as a more proper Santo memorial.
  21. I hope no one threatens Prince or CC with ejection when they seed up the dugout. A few years back, the guy next to my season ticket seats chewed tobacky, which I thought was gross, but he never said anything about my peanut shells, and he had entertaining Molitor drug stories, so big deal. I can't get upset about sunflower seeds or much of anything that happens at Miller Park, which is kept so freaking clean. Especially compared with the Calcutta sewer that is the Chicago version of Wrigley Field. I hope all the Andy Frain guys are Sox fans or at least Cubs haters, with the fans who urinate in cups and throw trash on the field. Bah.
  22. The bar attached to the Essen Haus has the teevee, I'm pretty sure. But maybe I'm only saying that because I really want to be at the Essen Haus right now.
  23. If last year you told me there would be arguments in late August about C.C. Sabathia's (!) pitch count in complete-game wins as a Brewer (!), the smile on my face would have broken my neck. That said, if next year I'm having the conversation, "Remember when C.C. pitched in Game 1 of the NLCS and he gave up five runs in the third inning to the Mets with that tired arm?" I will likely want to break someone else's neck. My view on the matter? God bless Warren Spahn, but the times have changed and we are paying good money for that pen. Use it.
