  1. Everytime I get annoyed by Yost bashing, he does something stupid like this to justify it once more.
  2. It definitely would be nice if the offense comes alive with this homestand.
  3. What stinks thus far about Bush are his perihpials. His redeeming quality has always been his K:B ratio, which was the best in the leauge in 06. Now, through two starts he has only 8 K's and 8 BB's. It's too bad.
  4. Agreed. Along with "going the other way," he says "not trying to do to much with that pitch," a gazillion times. He loves his baseball cliche's, and his voice is boring. Brian I enjoy, though.
  5. Ahh, first night game on a weekday. Perfect way to end a day. Plus we get to see Cueto pitch.
  6. Thus far Kendall has been an improvement behind the plate, as far as blocking pitches goes. And he's a releif to watch run after seeing Estrada lumber around the basepaths. If Kendall rebounds offensively this year, Melvin will come out looking mighty smart.
  7. Can you prove Gross is a liability in the field? Most every system has him average or slightly above average.
  8. Doesn't Gwynn know that that type of play doesn't help his OPS, and that's the main thing that makes a player good. Plays like that certainly are good. But the dig at OPS is not needed. Gwynn is a below average hitter, according to OPS and any other offensive statistic, and an above average defender and baserunner. OPS (or more plainly OBP and SLG separately) doesn't determine how good a player is, but it determines how good of a hitter someone is.
  9. Q: Has sabermetrics pretty much squeezed the last drop of new insights out of traditional counting statistics? If so, what data ought to be collected to improve our understanding of the game? If not, where can the boundaries be pushed? A: We haven't figured out anything yet. A hundred years from now, we won't have begun to have the game figured out. That's a crap statement. He really didn't answer the question, and he's wrong. Stuff has been figured out, but it will always be improved upon and new findings will always come about. Just saying we haven't figured anything out yet is stupid.
  10. Ya seriously, if he keeps hitting well we could actually net some good talent in a trade.
  11. I see a big difference. Gross offers a lot more pop and walks a lot more. Gwynn has a little better D, and maybe add's a run or two of value over the course of a season with his baserunning.
  12. Whew. Nice to get that W on opening day.
  13. That is ridiculously cool. Having the roof be rully retractable is pretty darn impressive, not to mention the accuracy of the inside of the park.
  14. My optimistic geuss is that they're gonna play him for these 25 games to get his stock up, and then trade him when Cameron is done witht the suspension. That being said, I still don't agree with him playing over Gross at all.
  15. Personally, I can't believe that he is gonna get the most playing time. The team needs to put out the best players possible, and 25 games does make a difference. First, Gwynn is putrid with the bad. PECOTA projects him at .251/.321/.344 in the major leagues. Gross on the other hand, has a projected line of .267/.366/.467. Gwynn is fast. But unfortunately he's not that great of a baserunner. The best baserunning statistic out there is Dan Fox's EqBRR. In 05 he was -1.4 runs, in 06 +3.4 runs, in 07 completely average. Gross, the last three years has had positive baserunning runs at +1.6 last year, +2.5, and +.9. Gwynn's defense has been praised by many. However, FRAA has 0 runs above average, for the past three years. Gross, is seen as an average fielder by other systems. With all those combined, it's not even a contest. Gross is significatly better, and although the difference will be around 5 or so runs over the course of 25 games, it's stupid to play Gwynn over Gross.

  17. And that's the problem with James. He has no idea whats going on in sabermetrics. He had an article in the THT annual, and in it he stated the debate had ended and no studies have been done, despite extensive work on the subject. In The Book, they found clutch hitting exists, albeit in a small way. Tons of others studies have been done. And then of course he's written junk in the past claiming clutch is a joke and has said "we're supposed to believe (supposed clutch hitters) are better people." James was a pioneer in the field of statistics, but he's pretty irrevelant now.
  18. I'd love to have the Sheets 05 bobble or the mini Vuke bobble.
  19. So his head is screwed on wrong becuase he had bad run support?
  20. rluz, I'm confused. Why is it that the lineup tool is limited to only using league average hitters? What reason is there that it wouldn't work with an actual lineup I've plugged in?
  21. sorry but i acknowledged this was a tiny sample. I know its statiscally meaningless. its 10 k's in 23 abs and i feel it is not the start rickie needs. I will be really scared if he starts this season with 23 meaningless abs posting 10 k's. If it's meaningless, then why are you worried about it?
