  1. quick question: why on earth is Counsell playing every darned game? We get it. He's a good fielder. Meanwhile he has an OPS of .651 while Branyan is rotting on the bench with a .921 OPS. It'd be nice if Ned could use his brain just once in a while.
  2. was that a joke by billy? absolutely terrible.
  3. This is just pitiful to watch. It really is painful.
  4. It doesn't thrill me either, but it's above average for a CF and it's satisfied my expectations. Exactly. He filled in a missing spot on the team and has given slightly above average production. I won't hand out any grades, but easily the largest dissapointment is Rickie. After hitting .251/.422/.481/.903 in the 2nd half last year, I thought that he could produce more similar to that this year. Instead we've seen his BA fall along with his walk rates and power. I don't really know what to make of his .257 BABIP. His infield fly ball rate is down to 16.1% form 17.4% last year, so it's not that. However, his groundball rate is way up, and flyball rate way down, which is not a good thing. In addition to that, his line drive rate is down 3%. From my perception this year, it does seem as if he's hit into an inordinate amount of screaming liners hit right at fielders. That could be completely wrong, but that's what I've felt. It will be interesting to see if he can pull himself out of this half year slump and actually contribute the 2nd half. The Brewers could really benefit from that.
  5. 4 days is too long with no Brewers game. It should be fun to watch CC work tonight. And these west coast games aren't cool. 9:15 start time? Lame.
  6. Angels is the Outfield The Big Green Little Giants And I second the Three Amigos. It's classic.
  7. The voting power of Brewers fans never ceases to amaze me. And that clip is awesome. It's good to see the guys having some fun.
  8. I'd say it's just statistical noise. In only 100 PA, the fluctuations due to randomness alone are pretty large. As an example, Jim Edmonds has 167 PA with the bases loaded. In them this is how he's hit: .284 / .323 / .461 Over his career, he's hit .285 / .377 / .526 With the bases loaded, I want the guy who's hit better in 7000 PA, not 100 PA.
  9. I disagree. The correlation is obvious; there is a distinct trend between low walk rates and Outside Swing Percentage.
  10. Becuase we believe that a lot of his failures have been becuase of bad luck. ERA, over a year or two of work, is greatly influenced by luck and things outside a pitchers control. So looking at the stuff that a pitcher has the most control over (BB's, K's HR) is a truer indication of how a guy pitched. This year though, he's bitten Bush advocates in the butt. His K's are down, BB's up, and HR's up. His FIP was 5.85 before tonights game, compared to a 4.36 career FIP before this year. My geuss is that he'll improve and regress UP toward the mean, back to the way he's pitched the past 4 years.
  11. Man that's unlucky for Parra. An uber-weak grounder for a hit, error on Fielder, and then Braun error. Ugh.
  12. Quick question. I was under the impression this current season (7th?) was supposed to be their last. So now there are doing an 8th season, with the finale in fall, which means the season wilil be during the summer? I'm confused.
  13. I don't know. I mean, last year Brewer's hitters were excellent and under the same management.
  14. I don't know. I mean, last year Brewer's hitters were excellent and under the same management.
  15. No. Rickie's career OPS vs righties is .735. An 89 PA sample split from this year means nothing.
  16. I don't know. Personally, I think Weeks BA will get up to that .260ish range and his OBP will be get up to around .380-.390, and Hart can't match those OBP's. And it's true that Hart will most likely have a higher SLG, so I don't thinks it's a good idea. Also, Hart in the leadoff spot last year had a walk rate of 6.8%, while everywhere else it was 5.9%. So he was a bit more patient, but not enough to make a change imo.
  17. I didn't say that runs were the way to value speed, but I did say that speed is part of the value of runs. I don't understand your second sentence. I'm not trying to create a seperate measurement for runs gained through speed. I'm saying that runs go beyond waiting on base until being knocked in by a teammate. True, runs go beyond waiting on base, and speed does play a factor. But that said, there's no much noise in it that I don't think runs scored is a reliable method to see how well a player has performed.
  18. Either you misinterpreted what he meant, or you ignored it. Of course speed translates to runs, but you don't measure the runs you gain through speed by runs scored.
  19. I typed in "Weeks" on baseballreference.com, and his name popped up, along with a guy named Charlie Manlove. Unbelievable.
  20. Exactly. I have a bunch of good friends who are like this. If I start explaining why a player like Gwynn isn't good at offense (getting on base, power) they just become ignorant and say batting average and SB. Honestly, when I came here I was a stupid fan. I liked the Brewers a lot, so I found this place, and starting reading. I had no idea what OPS was and thought batting average and HR were the only two important stats. When I found the new stuff interesting I gobbled all the information up. I just wish more people would be willing to do so to.
  21. Ya, the people that call into the postgame show can be terrible. My vent is related to that. I'm sick of all the stupid baseball fans. Usually, I don't care, I just ignore them. But it's so bad now and every dang person has an opinion on everything. I'm all for more support for the team, and with them inevitably comes a lot of garbage, but it'd be nice if they didn't spout off after every game with stupid crap. A friend of mine went to the game today, and the first thing he says to me is "the brewers are terrible." The casual fan who steadfastly thinks Tony Gwynn is an offensive force, or Rickie Weeks is terrible because of his batting average get to me. If only there was a way we could notify them all of bf.net and they'd be shown the light.
  22. Awesome win. On a side note, Bill said his player of the game was Ned Yost, for "pushing all the right buttons." Are you kidding me? He put in Turnbow, and ...... nothing else, except for making a very stupid move with Bush batting in the 6th. Good button pushing, Ned.
  23. Wow, those are sweet. I thought it was cool Manny Parra is Sheet's most comparable pitcher.
