  1. Not signing Benny was brilliant! Next to his curve ball getting hurt is what he does best. Don't worry. He's going down again this year.
  2. A great man. Most of all a good man. If only there were more Ernies in this world.
  3. Okay, okay I'll give you Braun, but even defensively heyward's probably better. Gallardo (the new Gallardo who walks people and goes barely beyond five innings<) no, you gotta give Gallardo for heyward.
  4. What's really bad about this contract is that it makes Sir Albert's worth at least 30mil per year. The whole salary structure spirals out of control as soon as someone puts up ridiculous numbers. Assuming Albert gets 30mil how long will it take to get to 40mil.? Something has to be done. I wish the fans had guts and brains enough to lock out the owners and the players, but that'll never happen. Joe Blow from Kokomo will usually work against his best interests whenever possible, and so...
  5. I'd trade anyone on the Brewers even up for Heyward--and so would you.
  6. I must say I liked the idea of putting more teams in New York and New England. In the English Premier League London has the equivalent of five major league teams because there's the fan base to support it. There's lots of problems with the EPL too, but it's a fascinating idea. I always thought the better idea would be to cut the amount of major league teams. Now I'm thinking of reversing myself. What if teams were establish on geographical area with similar populations. I know it won't be possible given the long tradition, but it would be interesting to think it through and see if relatively similar revenues could be generated under this scenario.
  7. In my world, since I now know that this game called baseball is really a geopolitical struggle between the forces of goodness (free marketers) and evil (revenue sharers) then I should be free to overthrow the government (MLB or any one team) as stipulated in the constitution--hopefully in a debilitating bloody coup that causes decades of fascist rule. Get real guys, the free market--especially in sports simply doesn't exist, except in the little game we play in our brains or over talk radio late at night with all the other kooks! Lets improve the game and its competitiveness. That's what sports is about--not philosophical drivel about the nature of freedom.
  8. I agree with almost everyone here. Overall, it does look really deep, but it doesn't look likes there's any real upside other than Lawrie. A catcher who's gonna be defensively average and hit .250 to .270 is the best we have to offer? Premium position or not, that's not very hopeful. In addition Arnett has be a real red flag so far (thank god it's so early). He absolutely needs to be no less than a #3 eventually.
  9. I would so lose baseball for a real salary cap that made the league fair. I don't care how it's done. I do think that all the economics of every team needs to be transparent, a matter of public record.
  10. So then for those of you who think we're getting top notch pitching in return for Fielder--you're depending on the stupidity of other teams. Why would I want Fielder when I've got Smoak? He's significantly cheaper; he's controllable, and I've got two 100mph arms coming up shortly to fill in the rotation. Because I can win? I don't believe it. Not even close. Keeping younf stud pitchers will get me closer to contending for playoff spots than slugging 1st basemen, who afterall, are not that hard to replace.
  11. Which team wants to trade cheap, controllable, upside, starting pitching? This simple conundrum should indicate what we're not going to get for Fielder. More than likely I think we'll get a starting pitcher who has started the arby process and who may turn expensive shortly. Or we'll get a high upside guy with some MLB experience and an injury history. But I can't believe anyone would be dumb enough to give up a true AA or AAA stud who is 21/22 and ready to blossom. Of course that's exactly what I'd want.
  12. I feel bad for him. He's one of those "ultimate teammate" types who deserves to succeed. Get well and come back raking. This could signal trouble for the Red Sox. Moving Ellsbury over shouldn't be a problem but who's in left and is he much better than a replacement level player? For a team like the Red Sox with serious aspirations, they could go into a funk--not that they're not already in a funk.
  13. I'd just like some shameless self-promotion here. I was the first person here to publicly claim/really believe that Rickie would be an all-star this year. As a person who is too often accused of being negative, instead of being realistic, I'd just like to say I've seen fewer players who work harder, who attempt to make real adjustments, and are as mindful as Rickie. I want a team of Rickies, if healthy, and wonder how far we'd go.
  14. As was correctly pointed out we never should have gotten this far. This is a domino that has fallen because of a domino that tipped over long ago--commitments to older pitchers who are at best mediocre. Macha does suck. In fact he's probably giving sucking a bad name. The manager's first job is to give his team the best chance to win, and he steadfastly refuses to do this. What we should be hearing from Macha is the hew and cry of a manager forced to use players he knows aren't as good as others at his disposal. It should be in the paper; it should be a public feud with Melvin and Mark.
  15. While I agree that there are many 1st basemen to look at and that it will depress his value somewhat, Milwaukee will not be in a position to afford 8 years and 184 mil. either. How about 150 mil? I don't think so because at 150mil the years will shorten, but still be too long. What the crew need to do is put out an all points bulletin: we will trade Fielder. We want a young stud pitcher at the AA or AAA level, and a decent position player (CF or C) who we have some control over. I think that's as good as we can do. Maybe someone will even throw in some A ball prospect(s), but I do think the compensation will not be sufficient. It will however be better than two draft picks.
  16. I just think it's a joy watching a hitter who shoots it to rightfeld on the outside pitch, pulls the inside pitch, and hits it up the middle on something down the middle. It's like watching an entirely baseball in the fifties or earlier. Good for him.
  17. Lets look at this from Rickie's p.o.v. He knows how good he can be, and he knows how hard he works, and he knows if he stays healthy he'll be a top flight offensive 2Bman. He also knows better than anyone he has a tendency to get hurt, which really hurts his value. What should Rickie do? Stay put Rickie says. No extension. If I'm healthy arby will reward me enough to set me up for the rest of my life. If I stay healthy I'm gonna cash in big time and don't want to give away a year or two. In other words if Rickie wants an extension then he's got confidence issues and I'd be worried if I was the Brewers. If he doesn't want an extension I'd be worried if I was the Brewers because it's gonna cost. In which case the only thing, given this scenario, that works for the Crew is that he doesn't succeed and he's once more cheap. Having said that--god I hope they extend him. I totally agree with those that say Milwaukee has to take some contract chances in order to enhance their ability to compete long term.
  18. Sports Illustrated hints that it will take 8 years and 200 million to sign Prince. God I hope it's true. That'll really take the pressure off because only an idiot would believe Milwaukee could or should sign one meatbag for that much. For a day: I Love you Scott Boras!
  19. Yes! Parra and Suppan are merely a piggy-backed 5th starter, just like in the minors.
  20. I agree with this completely, but if he continues to lay off the outside pitch (as he's done so far) then he'll certainly improve, and maybe significantly. Alas, he will not, and I await his Braun-like commitment to getting himself out on pitches low and 12 inches off the plate.
  21. This is the major reason I'm against the DH. It artificially pumps up salaries for lame players. It's another reason for the unfair playing field in major league baseball.
  22. My fav all time play was Rick Manning climbing the wall at Tigers Stadium to take away a home run. I literally fell out of my seat laughing. It was ridiculous, so far left of the bell curve it ended up on another bell curve on another planet.
  23. I really agree with whoever said it comes down to money. If the money is right you extend him. If he wants the security, sign him. 4 years at 26 mil. That will allow him to hit big once on the free agent market. This has to be the long term strategy for the Brewers--sign if the money is right, or wait for the big year--year and a half--and dump him or anyone.
  24. With less offense than last year, I think we'll see more save situations this year. With more of anything comes more variation, chance of a bad run etc. For now, I'm not worried, but if he blows half of his next 8 opportunities then I'd push the Hawkins button.
  25. He's playing out the string this year and will be non-tendered. However, I do believe that Edmonds will go down via injury, and that will be the most important games of his career.
