  1. Anyone see these clips? MLB should suspend this nut for a long time. Not only is he an awful player, but the guy has been in multiple altercations this week. I enjoy players that play with passion. I am bored with players that can't act like they belong in the big leagues
  2. Gallardo has been shelled four of his past 8 outings, and has only two quality starts since the All-Star break. The stats aren't updated with tonight's game yet, but his post-AS break ERA must be over 7.00 and hitters are hitting well over .300 on him. His talent and value to this franchise is enormous and I just don't understand why we keep throwing him out there to eat innings when something is clearly bothering him. Thoughts?
  3. Interesting Idea Kram- Essentially, this would allow teams to retain their premium players. A team can franchise one of their own players per season. Requirements: No subsidy for any team below 50% of the league average payroll (for example, league average 100m payroll, no subsidy if team payroll is below $50 million) League subsidy of up to $10 million per year on contract. Subsidy is up 50% per year of the contract. Maximum of 3 subsidies per team at and given time. Team with $50 million payroll = 10% subsidy on contract Team with $55 million payroll = 20% subsidy on contract Team with $60 million payroll = 30% subsidy on contract Team with $65 million payroll = 40% subsidy on contract Team with $70 million payroll = 50% subsidy on contract $10 million dollar penalty for teams below $50 million payroll. Penalty increases by $1 million every time this is violated. Teams get one exception per decade without penalty (for rebuilding) Luxury Tax for any team that is above 150% of the league average payroll. Penalty is $1 for every dollar over Think about it. If we could have resigned Prince AND Sabathia for $25m per.... we'd pay $15m per, league would pay $10m per.
  4. He's already at 94 pitches however. Looks to be very similar to Slowey's almost no-no last week when the Twins pulled him after 7 innings with 108 pitches. Is it bad that I WANT my Twins to be no-hit tonight. We're struggling, and probably due for a stinker of a game. I figure getting no-hit will make them angry and make them work harder to keep their focus. (Think the Brewers response to being no hit by Verlander)
  5. I look at it this way... despite having two cars on my insurance. The Nissan was $35k new. Say I get 200,000 miles out of it, that is 17.5 cents per mile. If I spend $6-10k on the car and can get 100,000 miles out of it, that is 6.0 to 10.0 cents per mile. Assuming maintenance costs, tire costs are equal. I've calculated I spend $13.4 cents per mile on gas (Premium at 2.95 for 22 mpg). If I can get 32 miles per gallon on unleaded (2.59) that is $8.1 cents per mile... so now I'm looking at the difference betwen 30.9 cents per mile for my Murano (Gas/Depreciation). With a $6-10k more fuel efficient car i'm looking at 14.1 to 18.1 cents per mile. Assume 4 years and 100,000 commuting miles. That is $14,100 to $18,100 for the fuel efficient car. Figure $30,900 for the Murano. Say I pay $600/year for the additional car insurance ($2400), and I can still save significant dollars. The question becomes "why keep the Murano?" I love the car, and love taking my boat out in the Summer. I'd really like to get 12-15 years out of my Murano. I hope that if I take good care of it, I can make it last awhile. With a commuting car, I doubt I'd put more than 5,000 -10,000 miles a year on the Murano and figure I should be able to easily get 12-15 years out of it at that pace.
  6. Did you buy it new Greg? What does something like that run brand new? I'd like A/C, power locks/windows, CD player etc... but cloth interior, no sunroof, no power seats etc...
  7. Hey Guys- Using my parents lovely van as a commuting car, though its getting close to 180,000 miles and probably could go at any moment. I'm looking at spending $6-10k on a commuting car and would like to get something like 4 years/100,000 miles out of it. Just curious if anyone has a Toyota Corolla (looking probably at model years 05,06,07). From the little I know about them, they seem to be steady, though not flashy cars. My Nissan Murano gets about 23-24 MPG... so getting 30-32+ would be gravy. Basically i'm looking to keep the miles off my Murano and improve my fuel efficiency a bit. Honda Civic i'm pretty familiar with, though its seems that a similar car/miles/year Civic is priced somewhat higher than a Corolla. Would appreciate any feedback you'd have on the Corolla or if anyone would have another model that they'd recommend: Looking for #1 reliable, #2 MPG, #3 price $6-10k (3-5 years old)
  8. I was a pretty vocal keep Hardy, trade Escobar poster, and I've calmed down some since Hardy has been awful this season (despite his recent hot streak). That said, Escobar, in my opinion, has been below average defensively (made some great players, but alot of unforced errors), and has been pathetic at the plate. I'm willing to give Escobar another full year to improve, but if he's still at a sub .650 OPS midway through his third full season in the majors (2012), then I think its time to go another direction (if one is available). I'm hoping Cain makes us all forget that Alex Sanch... i mean Carlos Gomez was ever a brewer
  9. Nice to see Braunie hit another HR and draw two walks today. Just looked at his August numbers: .429/.493/.540/1.033 and I'd say he's well on his way back from that pesky wrist injury. I realize that his OBP and SLG numbers wouldn't look so nice if he wasn't really seeing the ball well, but maybe this is a sign that his injury is healed and he's able to drive the ball more and be a bit more selective in his pitch selection. 8 walks and only 7 strikeouts (very small sample) give me hope... Thoughts? I think few people were getting worried about Braun (long term), but his June (.708) and July (.615) OPS numbers were simply awful
  10. I'd think most people would agree that our production has been absolutely AWFUL at SS and CF this season. Largely a reason we are lousy this season. Certainly Cain gives us more hope for the future, but our lack of an impact player at SS in concerning (given Hardy's .702 OPS, i'd hardly suggest keeping him would have eliminated this problem) As Escobar improves (i believe his range is good, but he makes alot of mistakes on routine players), he becomes very valuable as a .750-.800 OPS (or higher) player. In my opinion however, he is a replacement level player with an OPS below .700 Simply put, we need better production from our SS and from our pitching staff. If we do that, we should be fine in 2011
  11. As a Twins fan, (money aside), i'd take Hardy 100 times out of 100 over Escobar. If Escobar wasn't making the league minimum, he wouldn't have much value to a contending team. I concede that Escobar is likely to BECOME the better defender, but at present Hardy is superior to Escobar in every way (except salary earned).
  12. Joe Mauer http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ... kidding
  13. Wouldn't a much better stat to use would be BAA or SLG instead of ERA? If Parra allowed a BAA of .225 with the bases empty, and .325 with runners on, i think that would support the notion that he gets uncomfortable
  14. Minnesota doesn't need a 3B. David Valencia is absolutely tearing it up this year as a rookie, but i agree with your larger point
  15. I'm not disputing that it was the correct call. However, that is something that should be called immediately. Why didn't a PGA official (who would obviously be on hand on the last hole with the tourney leader) not call that immediately. To wait to call that until AFTER the hole was over was bush league. Overall, it was a stupid rule, and in my opinion a rule that is probably rarely enforced. That was a trivial call that will turn off thousands if not millions of casual fans to golf and it adds another embarrassing chapter to major sporting events held on WI soil. I highly doubt the golfer that won wanted to win the tourney on a technicality (as he did).
  16. I would have had no problem had they called the penalty immediately. But to go back retroactively and assess a penalty based on TV replays is bush league. Is the PGA going to go back and review every shot of every player within 2 shots of the lead? This is the equivalent to calling a balk with a runner on third and two outs with a 2-1 count in the bottom of the ninth in Game 7 of the World Series.
  17. This reminds me of the "tied" All-Star Game in Milwaukee. Dustin Johnson shoots for par to win the PGA Championship and misses. He heads back to the clubhouse, and PGA officials assess him a bush league 2 stroke penalty for "grounding the club" on an earlier shot in the hole... I hate it when pencil pushers with an agenda pull crap like this. Really really bad year for officials in all sports. As the spectators were chanting... let him play. Let it be settled on the course, not be some bureaucrat.
  18. Span's contract is very solid, but he's struggling this year. Not sure i'd put him on that list. Though maybe I should change the thread title to what are the five most team friendly contracts for positional players in baseball?
  19. At 105 pitches, wonder if they'll throw him out for the 8th inning. Twins up 1-0
  20. Factors: #1- Offensive production #2- Defensive production #3- Contract/Salary #4- Must have three years of MLB service (to avoid small sample sizes) Was marveling over that great 2005 class (Braun, Zimmerman, Troy T) and wonder how many .850+ OPS players in MLB are signed to team friendly contracts
  21. Small sample size? Maybe... but that covers 25-30 starts. Our pitching is simply awful. The laws of statistics would show that atleast one of our pitchers should be reaching their potential. If that is true, and that player is Narverson, we are really really hurting for any decent pitching
  22. Narverson 4.40 ERA 1.19 WHIP Gallardo 4.55 ERA 1.55 WHIP Wolf 5.79 ERA 1.55 WHIP Bush 6.68 ERA 1.76 WHIP Parra 7.48 ERA 1.63 ERA I'm really concerned about Yo since his return from injury. Other than getting a full season out of him, is there any reason not to shut him down. He just hasn't had it since his injury. I see no reason not to give some of our kids a chance to get their feet wet in September.
  23. As a huge Garza fan (though Delmon is finally panning out for the Twins), I would be all over this. I absolutely love what Yovani brings to the table, but I think Garza is actually BETTER than Yo. This would give us a legit 1-2 punch for 5-6 years as noted above. In trading Casey and Prince, we leave ourselves some holes. I'd assume in that scenario that Gamel takes over 3B, Hart slides to 1B, Cain + Braun + ? in the outfield. Or Gamel to 1B, Lawrie to 3B? I agree that it would be a no brainer to send them Prince + $10 million if we can get someone like Garza back. I'm not opposed to a youth movement, but LuCroy, Cain, Gamel, Lawrie (plus Escobar) gives us five pre-arby players to go with Hart, Weeks, and Braun. We'd either sink or swim depending on how that youth develops. Maybe they'd be established enough for late 2012 or 2013 to provide solid run support as our young arms start to progress to fill in the 3-5 slots behind Garza & Yo
