  1. I think I'd quietly offer 6/120, and tell Prince he has until the All-Star Break to accept or decline it. He's be 32 at the end of that deal and could cash in one more time if he was still productive. I have a very hard time seeing anyone offer him more than a six year deal, and as good as he is, i don't think any player is worth more than 20 per until they are a once in a lifetime talent at a defensive position (SS, C, maybe CF).
  2. I was just going to ask if anyone would mind giving Gallardo 4/68 if he was a free agent to be next season...
  3. http://sports.espn.go.com...lb/news/story?id=5057186 Didn't see this posted here yet. Most of us probably still enjoying the spoils of opening day or Carlos Gomez' 4-5 debut. $68 million seems awfully high for Beckett... He's pretty much a 3.75 ERA 1.20 WHIP pitcher the past three seasons... but i'm not sure if he'll be that for the duration of his contract. Beckett turns 30 next month and will be 34 when this contract expires. That said, i suppose that is what good pitchers make these days... 4/68 seems more reasonable than 7/151 or whatever CC Sabathia signed for.
  4. unreal... just checked and can basically get 2 tickets together anywhere I want on the field... right now, about 12 hours before 1st pitch
  5. I think Adam Lind might be the BEST current player in MLB that i've never heard of. .900+ OPS with 35 HRs, if he keeps that up, this is steal of the Ryan Braun variety. Hopefully he doesn't pull a Vernon Wells or Alex Rios or a Billy "Can Pitch" Hall
  6. No, it is pretty much just annoyance. It is very rare for an April Fools Joke to be funny or clever and this is no exception, especially when the same person does the same lame April Fools Joke. I think he was referring to this post... Next year, I pledge to not misspell anyone's name http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Of course, maybe Manny Parra will be converted to an outfield (Rick Ankiel style) by then...The board has had along standing obsession with Kelly Shoppach, similar to our previous obsessions with Frank Cat, and Gabe Kapler. Though we have AS and JC on the horizon from the farm system, i will nevertheless predict a midseason acquisition.
  7. I like Chicken Noodle as well. No Soup for you. For me, its hard to decide who I like more... Soup, or Carrot Top. Or Denise from Taco Bell. or the E-trade babies. Or the fact that i will be stuck at work ALL DAY MONDAY AND CAN'T USE MY OPENING DAY TICKETS
  8. I should add, that i can remember the debate about not wanting to trade Mark Loretta in 2000 to the Toronto Blue Jays because we couldn't possibly trade "our captain" or the guy who accepted the American Flag at the closing ceremony of county stadium. I love Miller Park, but part of me misses those 5,000 crowds on a weekday in April with the 30 degree overcast weather and high winds. okay, maybe not, but atleast club seats were still about $15 back then...
  9. I have followed the Brewers since the days of "the big three".... still pissed at Bando for breaking up the trio in 1992... though statistically, 20 years later, old Jimmy Boy sure had no power My most hated Brewers: Stubbs Carr Navarro (both times) John Snyder Sanchez Mouton Croutons Mark Newfield Jose K Billy "can't hit" Hall Ricky Bones Braden Looper Johnny "never take a walk" Estrada Ned Yost Jeffery Hammonds Grissom whoever was the ****** that we got from the cubs and immediately wanted to break Listach's record... (ah yes, Eric Young) Wow, i could make a list of players, miles long... Might be easier to make a list of players I continue to have 100% loyalty to: Brooks K Podzilla Braunie Hardy Jaha Surhoff Eldred... well, until he sucked Burnie Daryl Hamilton Kenny Lofton (err, wait, we screwed that one up... who's idea was it to bring in Marquis again? Coffey Fetters the "legendary" Vinny Rottino... actually he was rubbish now that i think about it, six miller lites later, i actually miss Mouton Croutons
  10. Rickie Weeks? OOPS... i think Weeks can have a break out season, but he must stay healthy. If Weeks doesn't have an OPS above .800, play in 140 games, or both, i hope we don't see him in a Brewers uniform in 2011. So much potential, but he has to be the most frustrating Brewer to watch the past 5 years
  11. Ah, there is usually one detail that I screw up.... Guess that's what happens when you are in a rush to come up with a good AF joke... Sorry to all those whose anxiety I raised today http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Remember next year to watch out for the annual TBWS post http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif That said, I am still pissed that the Twins traded Garza for Delmon Young.
  12. (AP) - In a rather stunning move, the Brewers, apparently unsatisfied with their rotation in what could be their final season with Prince Fielder, have agreed in principal to send LHP Manny Parra, 3B Mat Gamel, and minor leaguer Angel Salmone to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for starting pitcher Matt Garza and reserve catcher Kelly Shoppach. The Rays, with their stockpile of pitching apparently have decided to upgrade the catching position and secure a replacement for Carlos Pena should be leave via free agency next season. Parra, who has shown flashes despite a 6.36 era last season, will fight for the 5th spot on a strong Rays pitching staff. The Brewers, with the emergence of 3B Casey McGehee have apparently decided that 3B Gamel was expendable. "You have to give something to get something" GM Doug Melvin commented in announcing the trade. We had an outstanding offense last season, and we feel adding another #1/#2 type pitcher will really be able to give us one of the best staffs in the national league. Garza, with a 3.99 career era, will slide into the #2 spot in a rebuilt rotation that will also feature Yovani Gallardo, Randy Wolf, Doug Davis, and Dave Bush. When asked where he got the scoop, Brewers reporter TwinsBrewersWorldSeries replied that he gets a call from a "high placed source" in the Brewers organization once annually on April 1st. Things are looking up for the season, and hopefully this trade won't make me a liar with my annual prediction of a "Twins-Brewers World Series".
  13. I would agree with that FTJ. When you get to the "top 5" of anything, especially over a lengthy time span, i'd say its tough to anoint anything "best ever". Probably better and more accurate to say you can make an argument for best ever, and then say definitively that it was top-5 ever for a catcher. I imagine there are dozens of not hundreds of contributing factors that the public will never know making it hard to compare without simply looking at the "stats" Hopefully Prince has a "top 5 ever" year for a 1B, and after winning a world series, we can argue with Yankees fans if Fielder's year is "best ever " http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  14. Prince had an absolutely monster season last year, but Mauer might have put up the best season EVER for a catcher last season. I think few people realize how special Mauer is. Three times in history has a catcher won the batting title in the American League. All three times are Mauer. There is another stat (i believe it is something like 5 total ever when you consider MLB as a whole, and Mauer has 3 of the 5) The player that I think of when I see Joe Mauer play is Paul Molitor. Offensively, i think they are very similar players (granted i was 11 years old when the Ignitor was run out of town by the Seligs). Defensively, not only is Mauer the batting champ, but he's also won multiple gold gloves behind the plate. I'm biased, and my ultimate dream is a Twins-Brewers World Series, but i think a player like Mauer only comes around once in a generation. He could get hurt and blame out, but if you had to ask me now, i'd say he's a first ballot HOF who probably will put up a .325/.425/.475/.900 line for most of his contract. His value decreases if he moves off catcher, but he's still a damn valuable player if he moves to 3B or even one of the corner OF spots. I think people forget how many players consistently put up a .900 OPS in baseball. There is a change of regression, but i'd bet the farm right now that Mauer makes the HOF.
  15. Update on the Mauer Negotiations... Minneapolis Star Tribune has started to speculate about the Twins maybe trading Joe Mauer. Just about all information up here is speculation, but the word on the street if that the two sides are about $5 million per year apart (Twins offering 10/200, with Mauer wanting 10/250). Again, this is just pure speculation in the media, but emotions are running really high right now as most fans (including me), thought the deal was done in early February after those early reports, and now a signing seems less likely. The next 2-3 years could be really rough on small market teams in baseball. If Mauer leaves the Twins and Prince leaves the Brewers, i'm going to be extremely angry at the economics of baseball and will probably lose some interest in the game. I equate this development as similar to if the Packers had not resigned Brett Favre after the 1995 NFC Championship loss to Dallas. For the sake of baseball, i hope the Twins offer the money, and Joe takes it. If Mauer leaves for New York or Boston next year, that is bad for the Twins, and bad for baseball.
  16. It's called good marketing http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif "4 pack" sometimes is a good gift for someone etc... I agree, you really gain nothing financially by locking yourself into those four games. If anything, you lose financially because you are paying the same price and losing flexibility. This will be my last year with a 9 pack.... its simply not worth it. Yes, you get one free game (opening day), but this might be the third year in a row where we have our 9 pack paid for before 1/1 pay for $50/face value seats, and still end up with garbage standing room only tickets. In both years, i've missed 2-3 games of the nine pack, and some of the games were not games i would have chosen with flexibility. If the "playoff" incentive is good, maybe its worth it, but for me it isn't anymore. I'm fully prepared/willing to pay $100/ticket if/when the Brewers make the playoff next... Like i said before, Mark A has done an incredible job with his marketing department and i'm glad these marketing skills have translated into sellouts and $$$ to raise the payroll. That said, if you really look at it, there just isn't a reason to buy a 4 pack or a 9 pack...
  17. Melvin said Edmonds was a better deal considered we signed Edmonds BEFORE Oakland signed Gross, and we overpaid... (assuming Edmonds makes the team)
  18. Ooooh... i just started a thread on the main page before realizing this one had been updated. "Where there is smoke there is a fire?" - Would the CBS Affiliate really publish the details unless they had something very firm? This isn't bleacher report or some crappy media outlet reporting a signing
  19. http://wcco.com/sports/tw...minnesota.2.1462891.html There appear to be a few conflicting reports on this, but this is a pretty big news outlet reporting it.. This would be a huge "win" for small market teams everywhere. Maybe a "blueprint" on how to get Prince to resign? The moment this deal is officially inked, it will bring great joy to my heart and sadness to the teams i love to hate (New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox)
  20. Nothing says we can't trade for him for our playoffs run http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. This is, i believe, Parra's last pre-arby year. Paying significant dollars for a starting pitcher with an ERA over 5.00 just isn't smart If he's a 4.25-4.50 era type this year, then there is some value there, but $3-4 million (next year) is Parra doesn't show anything this year IMHO is a waste of money. You can get long relief/mop-up guys for much cheaper than $3-4 million
  22. This four year deal would make me even more eager to trade for him... that said, he's not going anywhere, but maybe a trade target in 1-2 years
  23. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4826840 So much for that idea
