  1. Vibes don't win pennants, and beans don't burn on the grill. Justice just likes to push people's buttons. he's quite silly.
  2. From 2004-2007 Astros pitchers were only 5% more likely to give up a home run at home than on the road (based on HR/PA). So. it's not the chamber of horrors that the national press tries to shove down everyone's throat.
  3. There are times when I wouldn't mind seeing Carlos Lee fall into a mote full of piranhas.
  4. Nope, the quality of my comments have been fine. The funny thing is that he's a liberal from Canada griping about free speech in America. Well, at least we don't have Human Rights Commissions going around trying to stifle free speech (see Mark Steyn). I'll admit that both genetlemen are tremendous beancounters and I have learned a lot about baseball from them, but I have zero respect for them otherwise.
  5. tristarcoop, But it's not a LL ballpark. I wish it had bigger dimensions, but people outside of Houston have a pathological disdain for the place that is not grounded in reality. I am going to start calling this condition MMPDS (Minute Maid Park Derangement Syndrome).
  6. Right here. It's the same park for both teams. That's why it's silly to gripe about it. EDIT - and I wasn't really defending the park. I was just noticing how much you folks seem to be obsessed with it.
  7. What I find hilarious is that the park itself gets so much vitriolic comment. Yes, it does give up a higher than average number of HRs, but overall it's been playing as a pretty neutral park or even a pitchers park. So the notion that it's like the pre-humidor Coors Field is just silly. Look, I like pitchers parks, so I would not have designed this one, but I've made peace with it. brwsfan: As far as "y'alls", it's sometimes used as a possessive as in "Y'all's team really knocked the crap out of the ball tonight." Is that the usage you heard? Finally, pitchleague's post provides a good analysis of the MMP and that's an interesting comparison by TooLiveBrew..
  8. I heard mgl the radio with Richard Justice, and he was pretty nice. Everywhere else he comes across as a complete jerk. Tango really isn't any better. They both post contraversial political topics on The Book Blog and then delete comments from people who disagree with them. Their collective skins could not be thinner.
  9. As an Astros fan, one of the things I find hilarious is how y'all people gripe about our stadium - even when you freaking win! So, I'm wondering how many "this stadium is a bandbox" type comments you guys will post in the IGT for today's game.
  10. It's not overreacting at all. Either you're all in or you're not. I think the better product is seeing guys be forced to play a position. If they can't so be it - it exposes their flaws rather than covering them up. I don't care if the AL has a DH. I just want to be able to watch baseball as God intended. If Bud Selig takes that away from me, then I'm done with this game.
  11. Actually, it was low-scoring in the 70s that brought about the DH. That low-scoring environment no longer exists.
  12. It's not real baseball if you don't have to field your position. If you want the "best" baseball product, then let's expand the active rosters to 50 and have 8 Adam Everetts and 8 David Ortizes playing at the same time.
  13. It's not about pitchers hitting, it's about hitters having to play in the field. The moment the NL adopts the DH is the moment I stop watching MLB.
  14. Yep, that sounds about right. When Sean Casey was still with the Reds, it was hilarious when Berkman would reach first. The TV cameras would get some great footage of their gabfests at first base.
  15. Berkman's a bit of a clown. But he's also a clever guy with quips and one-liners. Although he can be pretty opnionated, he doesn't take himself too seriously. He's really like the guy next door if the guy next door could knock the crap out of a baseball. As for Prince vs. Berkman, Prince is younger.
  16. I don't undertsand why anyone would hate Berkman, unless it's just because he's very good. He's funny, self-effacing, and more than a tad goofy. What's not to like?
  17. As an Astros fan, I still don't think they will make the playoffs, but it's good to see Berkman getting some props. Berkman and Oswalt have been very underrated nationally, though probably not by fans of NL Central teams.
  18. I worked for Questec a few years ago, and unless they have changed, they don't track that. They are only interested in called strikes or balls. When a player swings, the system doesn't use those pitches when grading the umps, so they are basically discarded.
  19. Although it is a good home run park, overall it's been playing as a neutral park over the last few years. I could say a couple of other things here, but I know y'all don't tolerate criticism on this board.
  20. There is definitely a divergence between strategy and entertainment. Small ball is not really the best strategy in today's run environment, but it's more entertaining than "single, walk, 3 run homer."
  21. By the way, Enron/Minute Maid also cost a lot less than Miller - $150 million less according to ballparks.com
  22. I live in the Houston area and that happens to be the weekend of my birthday. The stadium's not a dump. I'm not super crazy about it, but to call it a dump - that's just whacked.
