  1. Arizona is closer to the rest of the AL West than the Astros are. Sure, Arizona would make sense, moving to the AL West. But then you have to move Houston to the NL West anyway. Now you're moving two teams instead of just one. Plus, Houston in the AL West gives them the games against the Rangers, so there is that bonus. Arizona has nothing like that in either divison, nor will they ever unless Vegas gets a team some day. That's not a bonus to me. I don't give a crap about the Rangers. I'm fine with moving to the NL West.
  2. OK, but Smith didn't say anything like that. If you want to talk about moving the Brewers and also then moving another team...why not just have the one team move that makes the most sense? The Astros are in a six team division, and have no natural rivalry with any of those teams. Moving them to the four team AL West and giving them an in-state opponent in the form of the Rangers makes the most sense, I would think. As someone else wrote, there are only three rivalries in baseball.
  3. Yeah...look at geography and get back to us on this idea. Uh...it is certainly a workable (if frightening) plan, Brewers to AL central, KC to AL west. I could certainly see folks in Houston saying, "why should we move rather than the team that only joined the NL in 1997?" This. The Astros have been in the NL since 1962 and before that the minor league Buffs were a Cardinals farm team from 1921-58.
  4. Yeah...look at geography and get back to us on this idea.Arizona is closer to the rest of the AL West than the Astros are.
  5. Then send the Brewers back to the AL.
  6. If Czar Selig sends the Astros to the AL, I'm done with MLB.
  7. Pinball machines... other than Minute Maid Park?Actually MMP has been a fairly neutral park the last few years.
  8. There's no rivalry with the Rangers. The logical choice is a team that doesn't have a 50 year history in the NL - like Arizona or Milwaukee.
  9. Looks like your boy Bud Selig is blackmailing Houston. REPORT: MLB WANTS ASTROS IN THE ALBaseball commissioner Bud Selig has asked prospective Houston Astros buyer Jim Crane to agree to move the team to the American League if he is approved as onwer, according to Fox 26 Sports in Houston. Major League Baseball sources told the station that the fact that Crane has yet to agree to the request has kept him from being approved as owner. 10. Bud Selig decided to move the game to Milwaukee. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  11. Awesome news. Might have one on my birthday.
  12. A 15 inning game can be played in less time than it takes to go through mgl's analysis of bunting.
  13. I don't see the Astros doing much in the off-season. By finishing 86-75 they (or at least Drayton McLane) think that they are a good team already. It's silly, but there it is. They might have made a play for Sheets since he's kinda a local guy, but his injury has presumably rendered them uninterested.
  14. Everyday (at least I look at the summaries via Google Reader) The BOOK Blog Baseball Prospectus Baseball Analysts Baseball Analysis (Fan Graphs) Baseball Think Factory Hardball Times Astros related Richard Justice (I'm a masochist). Astros Fan Blog (at Chron.com) Crawfish Boxes The Astros Dugout (you guys should check this one out. Lisa's pretty funny.)
  15. Failures to get bunts down are simply excused as bad execution, but all strategies have to factor in the general probability of such failures.
  16. Yes, that was quite an interesting exchange. The Book blog also had a post about the Justice/MGL blow up. Interestingly enough, Justice had Lichtman on his radio show a few days after the exchange and he was very nice to Lichtman. Justice is some piece of work. He writes things just to pussh people's buttons and since he always filp-flopping he pushes a lot of buttons.
  17. Buried in the comments of this post on Richard Justice's blog is a long piece on bunting by Mitchell Lichtman (one of The Book guys). Link
  18. Baseball has a problem in that the style of play that is most interesting to watch is not the one that is the most effective in winning. The game was a lot more enjoyable back in the 80s when teams were stealing like mad. Walks and three run homers make the game less watchable.
  19. Yes. I think the whole reason Bud forced the Astros to play in Milwaukee was to help the Brewers.
  20. Whenever Bud Selig says "Jump", Drayton McLane asks "How high?"
  21. Well, at least it looks like Ike is not strengthening, though Galveston Island is still going to get hit hard with storm surge. I went through Alicia in 83, but I lived in a different part of town back then. I would leave in a minute if I were in a mandatory evacuation zone. As for baseball, I really don't know how the Astros are winning all these games. I figured them for a 76-86 team.
  22. Yeah, that was TS Allison back in 2001. Houston floods very easily. It would certainly add insult to injury if it were to stall. I live in Baytown - 25 miles of Houston on I-10. A mandatory evac has been issued for the southernmost part of the town, but I'm riding it out - nervously.
  23. First off, it's not Enron Park anymore. I suppose that a jab at Texas too. Well, Enron, bad a company as it was, has done less harm to society than Miller Beer. Secondly, what's with this "few restaurants and businesses around are typical of Texas, cheaply-made, steel-and-glass and without character." Really. is it necessary to be so condescending. A lot of folks down here think Milwaukee beer is cheaply made and without character. I admit I flew off the handle a couple of times. Then I tried to delete the post. Yes, it was classless, but the comment I was responding to struck me as cheap shots.
  24. I think Roger Clemens, Any Pettite, and Roy Oswalt had a little more to with Houston getting to the WS that year than Brad Ausmus or Adam Everett, they were just along for the ride. But the quote said you needed 8 sluggers. Also, if thought Everett was not "just along for the ride", his defense was outstanding. I'll concede Ausmus didn't bring much, but the pitchers all loved him.
  25. Yeah, it's not like they went to the World Series in 2005 with Brad Ausmus and Adam Everett playing in that bandbox.
