  1. Maybe the Brewers subliminally wished they'd been winning a big game on October 28 as well as September 28. With our original Christmas Eve plans derailed by the weather, we watched the DVD this evening. I enjoyed it. Given CC's departure in the meantime, I wondered if seeing everyone fawn over him would be bittersweet, but I didn't feel that way. Of course, the best comments came from the Doorman, our own Rickey24. Nice work. I still marvel at our good fortune to have seen so many of this season's great moments in person. We must have done something right along the way.
  2. I'm going to have to second that. Occasionally there's a disgruntled fan who didn't see the Family Section printed on his/her ticket and is a jerk when asked to step outside the section to finish a beverage. Otherwise, not only are the ushers usually watching for snuck-in alcohol (at least in TB 417 and 217; I can't speak for TR 417 or the bleacher section), a lot of the fans who regularly sit in that section do too.
  3. Madison sets new December snowfall record 36" for the month. The all-time snowfall record for a month here is 37" (February 1994), so there's still a week for that record to fall...or be buried.
  4. Thanks, guys (and ewizabeff). Of course, the snow has now ended in Madison and the sun is trying to come out. Still, given the wind, the forecast for single digit temps tonight and the likely (lack of) visibility out of town, I think we made a reasonable call. The family kind of has to find another day to meet with us...if they want their gifts. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  5. So, we were supposed to drive from Madison to Kenosha for Christmas Eve tonight. There's more snow (falling as well as on the roads) than we want to contend with driving through, so the S.O. has just called his brother's house to report that we are going to stay home this year. He's still on the phone and I can tell from his side of the conversation that they think we are wimps for not wanting to drive. This really bugs me, because everyone else invited to this gathering lives in Kenosha and of course won't have difficulty getting there. I'd like them to respect our judgment regarding the road conditions between here and there, and what conditions we're willing to drive through. I only have today and Thursday off, we're due in Waunakee tomorrow, and neither of us would like to spend today white knuckled in the car, hoping we don't wind up in a ditch (or worse). Additionally, this would be the first time in almost 20 years that we've bowed out of making the trip. (It was cancelled one year due to illness on the Kenosha side of the family.) We travel more every Christmas than anyone on either side of our extended families. Only once (the above-mentioned cancellation) have we had Christmas Eve and Christmas morning to ourselves as a couple. I think once every couple of decades, when the roads are in poor condition, we should be able to pass without being made to feel guilty about it. Perhaps the S.O.'s family should feel fortunate that the weather has been decent as many December 24s as it has. (I hope someone here agrees with me.)
  6. Yeah, the scene outside our window here is utterly picture-postcard...but we are expected in Kenosha tonight. We have two less than stellar choices for how to spend the afternoon/evening (drive through this, or skip a great meal and fun gathering).
  7. At first I was tempted to edit the subject line to clarify which GG we're talking about...but the posts here have been far too entertaining for me to want to edit anything just yet. I remember Gary Glover mostly for his G-Love nickname (just as you can't say only "Joe Dillon," you have to say "Crazy Joe Dillon"). But he also won that freebie game at the end of Mark Attanasio's first season as Brewers owner. We flipped our tickets from that game for some really nice (section 112) seats for a game the following April - when Chris Capuano got the start and looked into my soul when everyone else figured he was eyeing first for his sweet pickoff move. But I digress.
  8. Tiny shred of silver lining (maybe): No one can say Bud's arranged things to favor "his" Brewers this time. I'm going to channel my Yankee rage into shelving books.
  9. Yeah, even I am going to have to log off here for a while so I don't risk earning a strike. That's right, hawing said that.
  10. I know I came pretty close. The only thing I remember about my reaction was hugging the S.O., and hearing him say, "It's not over yet." If you just leave the window open, the call plays periodically. All right, here we go with Ryan Braun...
  11. You certainly sound knowledgeable about this.
  12. That would be sweet, if only it were true. But it turns out the S.O. had a CD maturing, and decided that putting it toward the mortgage would be better than letting it get 1% interest or whatever. (He didn't think I'd notice.) So, mystery solved, and yes, our mortgage is paid down about 40 percent. Tom says he now personally owns the garage outright.
  13. Portland's turned you into a thug! Or else it was the snow. Damn you, snow!
  14. So, I got home tonight, opened the mail, and our monthly mortgage statement suggests that a payment of $20,020.71 was made on our mortgage during Thanksgiving week - as well as our ordinary, much much smaller monthly payment. The amount of the mystery payment reduced our mortgage balance by about 40 percent. I figured, hmm, interesting error, probably due to the credit union recently outsourcing mortgage recordkeeping to another company. But I also just checked our online credit union account, and the payment appears there too. Either a large error has been made, the S.O. is keeping a large secret from me, or some anonymous donor is hard at work. I'm guessing #1. I can't verify #2 until S.O. gets home from his haircut, and if it wasn't him, we can't verify #1 or #3 with the credit union until business hours resume tomorrow.
  15. People already on an email list for the Brewers have probably seen this by now: Link For those of you who still can't get enough of Bob's sweet, sweet call.
  16. Not to mention, that game ending double play. "Durham, to Hardy...to first!" Imagine if Rickie had bobbled that ball. Ow, my soul.
  17. You meant to put that in blue, right? I'm starting to think we won't be able to make the Kenosha Christmas Eve.
  18. http://www.geardiary.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/bacon-dental-floss.jpg Yes, you can buy bacon floss.
  19. I'm open to the whole idea, but would not be looking forward to the taunting emails I'd get from a friend who's a Cardinals fan. Your 2009 Milwaukee Brewers: The next place for former STL pitchers whose nicknames rhyme with "oop."
  20. I wouldn't say the window of opportunity for that gesture is completely closed, but I agree with Invader3K - at least to me, it would feel a little hollow. Unless he says something like, "Thanks to everyone in the Brewers' organization and fanbase for helping set up this crazy-lucrative gig I have now."
  21. I enjoy following NCAA women's volleyball, but for a Badger fan this year's final four held only negative interest: Stanford: Ended Wisconsin's season a few years back. Texas: Ended Wisconsin's season a different year (a few years back). Nebraska: Their coach used to be Wisconsin's coach. He left for the Nebraska job just in time to beat Wisconsin in the finals in 2000. Penn State: College volleyball's nearest equivalent of the Yankees/Red Sox/Mets (without the payroll). 'Tis no team, 'tis a relentless volleyball machine. Unfortunately for the rest of the Big Ten conference, they're in the Big Ten, and the only drama in pre-season predictions is getting to be who finishes 2nd, 3rd, and so on. I literally didn't want any of the teams to win. Of course, Penn State is the champion, again, finishing off an undefeated season match-wise (and nearly set-wise, as the only single game they lost was in the national semifinal Thursday night).
  22. This whole thread intimidates me (a bit). I guess I'm like And That, dorkily content with just plain Firefox. (Sorry, Toby, that probably knocks your hipster quotient down a few notches.)
  23. I'm tempted to scoff. In our neighborhood, some terrace piles are nearing my height (5' 4"). Plow piles on Friday were a couple of feet high.As of 6:00 tonight, Madison's official total snowfall for December was 33.1 inches. 1.9 inches to tie the December record (which may have already happened since 6:00). It'd be helpful if we could actually travel to our intended destination (Kenosha) on Christmas Eve. The S.O.'s family is nice, but they're not likely to reschedule just for us.
  24. obsessedwithbrewcrew may not have to shovel, but I'd say it was spoken more like a true meteorology student. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif The stop where we left the bus tonight is a block away from our house. That street (a three-block side street that ends in a dead end) had only had one lane's worth plowed as of about 5:45. We walked down the middle of the plowed side. Looking at the unplowed side, it made me think of a snowy war zone, it was so messy looking. But since it's a three-block side street that ends in a dead-end, I expect it to be low on the plowing list, and it was plowed a couple of hours ago. The thing that bothers me now is that the 08-09 winter now has more snowfall than the 07-08 winter had on December 19, 2007. I thought I coped pretty well with the record snowfall last year, but I don't think I need to see record snowfall two years in a row. Yet, Madison is now 31% of the way to 100 inches of snow.
  25. As much as I appreciate CC's efforts here in 2008, I think he has a point. I don't remember if I mentioned it on the forum or in face to face conversation with people, but I fully imagined parts of the Brewers' fanbase being noticeably disappointed (if not outright booing) if CC could "only" average, say, 5-6 innings per start in 2009. I'm not sure I would have talked about that reason with the media if I were he, but apart from being at Miller Park on the same day a bunch of times last season, CC and I don't have a lot in common.
