  1. Oh, I just saw that. Jebus. It felt so good to be in the beige and relatively benign "hazardous weather outlook" zone on the NWS map for at least a few hours (instead of the Wind Chill Advisory icy blue or the Winter Storm Watch darker blue or the Winter Storm Warning hot pink).
  2. Oh, no, it IS a class 3 kill-storm!
  3. From the Channel3000 list of closings: I snickered when NMF posted the Kent Brockman quote a ways back, but no Fireside Christmas this afternoon? Damn you, snow! (Apologies if any of you are connected to the Fireside. Their commercials always sound so cheesy.) Oh, and for more Madison fun, here is a link to the Memorial Union Terrace webcam.
  4. I clambered over to Monroe Street (2 blocks away) at about 7:25 this morning, figuring some bus would come by sometime. Within 10 minutes, there were two in a row. I opted for the second one and had a spacious and almost leisurely ride in (3 riders + the driver). On Mills St, just off Johnson, a bus was stuck. I couldn't see the route number; the route sign was stuck on the "Happy Holidays" message. For the small part of campus sidewalks that I took so far today, snow removal is really at a pretty decent level, considering how much fell and how recently. Walking through Library Mall between Humanities and the Historical Society, it was apparent that that path had been plowed, but was already drifting partially shut. And of course, hardly anyone is at the library today. This will be just an excellent use of my time.
  5. The weather guy on the radio in Madison just said there was a thunderstorm in Milwaukee. You guys get thundersnow. I'm slightly jealous. On a relatively happy note, our next door neighbor with the new snowblower is still blowing our sidewalk and driveway as well as his. We have to find him a super duper Christmas gift.
  6. UW-Madison decided not to change its exam schedule for today. They claim that campus crews are keeping up with plowing and clearing. I guess I'll see for myself in an hour or two, provided the "10-15 minute" delay for Madison Metro is accurate. Madison K-12 schools are closed, though, and presumably few if any are open. Edit: as of 6:05 AM, snow is falling heavily in Madison and is quite windblown. It looks impressive, I have to say.
  7. This would be uncommon, if it comes to pass: Snow could force University of Wisconsin -Madison to alter finals schedule Of course, this will all but guarantee a resounding "dud" storm (as I think NeedMoreFans put it earlier this week). And it doesn't mean the university would 'shut down.'
  8. I'm not looking forward to a long wait for the bus in the morning (because state agencies will not close), or to having to work all day when oodles of people around me will have or take a snow day - but some good ol' thundersnow would go a long way toward making the hassle more worthwhile.
  9. Literally just minutes ago, as I was walking in from the bus stop, I looked at the pavement and thought, "nice to see you, for a little bit at least."
  10. OK, now, this is just whacked out: Bacon Popcorn The ad copy says it's vegetarian friendly. HOW?
  11. Given the huge media buildup for this storm, they are probably in "better safe than sorry" mode. Plus the change to a 9:00 PM start was relatively recent. That's all I've got.
  12. Maybe he meant the "biggest contract" championship?
  13. It's at times like this when I get extra irritated that our timekeeping system at work functions only in IE.
  14. So...what was that we had a year ago? I guess you could argue it was an "unreal winter." Perhaps 2007-2008 was less severe in the Cities?
  15. Bacon link that some will find delightful and others will find frightful.
  16. Surely the Doorman's contribution was better.
  17. Good enough. I used to check the forecast discussion regularly but lost track of where to find it after the umpteenth reorganization of data on the website.
  18. OK, show us where they said that.
  19. Yuku seems to have a gremlin who gets a kick out of occasionally messing up time/date stamps. Either that, or pitchleague is channeling either the past or the future.... But back to the next pending storm. The weather guy on the radio this morning (erstwhile Brewerfan Madison softball opponent Brian Olson) thought that the afternoon commute on Thursday wouldn't be a problem. Hope so, because if I can't get my hair cut Thursday, I'll probably have to wait until after New Year's. I'd rather not be shaggy for the rest of 2008.
  20. True dat, as even Bob Uecker would say. Twists and turns are just about the norm with that kind of transaction, but remember that the majority do work out in the end. Good luck. Oh, and ttsather, don't forget the bacon lip balm. That Baconnaise link really lost me when I got to the part about the lip balm.
  21. Yeah, some years ago during a quiet moment at the library we were wondering out loud (though not too loud) if Steve and Barry's had a website. A google search yielded a monster.com ad seeking people to manage what were not named as sweatshops, but were very obviously sweatshops. I wish I could remember the euphemisms used in the ad. I work two blocks from the State St. location and still never think to walk over and look to see what's left.
  22. I'd just like to be able to get to Madison's west side Thursday at 7:00 PM for my haircut, and home safely after. Is that so wrong?
  23. The same reason that bacon is not a topping option on every orderable food product. Utter madness. Do you need more bacon in your life, ttsather? Check The Onion.
  24. Adam McCalvy's brewers.com report on the Capuano deal includes this tidbit (emphasis added by me): So, either Patrick425's family or the hawing household were bumped from our sweet family section seats by Cappy. I guess I can live with that. Also, per the same story, Chris joined the chorus by also having LASIK surgery (on one eye), and he'll soon have his wisdom teeth removed.
