  1. Yeah, the Wisconsin Historical Museum is a division of my employer (the Wisconsin Historical Society), so while I didn't develop the exhibit myself or anything, I've been following its progress for about a year, and the lead curator (David in the video) asked me for some extremely general opinions early in the planning process (which was fun). I don't remember exactly what I said before. But it's a nice collection of memorabilia from the 1957 Braves and 1982 Brewers, along with some artifacts you wouldn't necessarily expect - like the "AT BAT" lighted sign from the original County Stadium scoreboard. For some reason that strikes me as really cool. For this exhibit, relatively few of the artifacts are Historical Society property - a lot of it is on loan from private collectors. As a result, this particular combination of items is never going to be viewable again, after December 2. If you're in or can get to Madison this fall, I highly recommend it. There's also related merchandise in the museum store, much of which can be purchased online. Here is my favorite photograph from the exhibit: http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/museum/wsw/images/photo4.jpg This is where Lew Burdette lived in 1957. The folks out front are his neighbors who decorated the house before he returned from Game 7. Imagine, such a modest home for a World Series hero. I feel confident that no one in MLB nowadays has digs like this. Another cool thing (I think) is that Red Schoendienst made a generous (monetary) donation to the Museum for the exhibit.
  2. I was going to make a pan of brownies. Everyone at the library loves them. We also have chairs for ourselves, that I might even remember to bring. We'll look forward to meeting Geno, and seeing the rest of you again.
  3. I don't think I can physically join you. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/eyes.gif But I could forgo getting a haircut. Would that count?
  4. I saw one of those trucks parked illegally on campus last week - I forget the location but it was high profile, and the truck was parked completely in a yellow curb zone. At first I thought, hmm, stupid; but I suppose they might consider it worth the cost of a parking violation to get the enhanced visibility. I also have forgotten what the truck was advertising. Hah! Hawing 1, advertiser 0!
  5. If anyone still cares dbacks 2 cubs 0 bottom 4 I'll care about that. I just might wear my Doug Davis jersey on Sunday.
  6. OK, well, whatever shred of respect I might have still had for Eric Young has now got up, got up, got out of here, GONE.
  7. Jamie, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the Little Downtown Lounge may not be the absolute luckiest place to watch a Brewers game. Especially if you're a Claudio Vargas fan, but I don't think that's a heavily populated category now.
  8. Sometimes I wish I was unemployed so I could watch American Justice, Cold Case Files, City Confidential, Infamous, The First 48, and Intervention all day long. Careful what you wish for, brett. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif Crime is not really my bag, but I have seen one episode of City Confidential which I found almost hilarious. Its subject was a 1985 murder in Darlington, Wisconsin. The incident was not hilarious (county judge loses election, freaks out, goes to opponent's law office to kill him and kills the guy's associate instead), but the way the story was told gave us some hearty laughs. The judge/suspect's defense tried three responses in court, all of which failed: (1) I wasn't there; (2) I was there, but I didn't mean to kill anyone; and (3) I was crazy. And the way the narrator pronounced "crazy" was what got us: kind of a drawn-out "ca-RAAA-zay." Darlington is a small town (pop. 2300+) southwest of Madison, and is also where my brother's family happens to live (nowadays, not in 1985). We can't walk down Main Street without pointing out "the murder building."
  9. The Capital Times in Madison began including in its MLB coverage this season the 'fantasy four' - four players whose performance the day before would make a difference in your fantasy baseball competition. I was amused to see that in today's paper, all four players were Rangers.
  10. he doesn't seem to blow up outwardly as much as he used to. It's internal. More fun for me. Thanks for the input. I agree, internal or external, if it messes up the hothead, it works for me. And thanks, Giants. You may now proceed to suck for your next three games.
  11. Ah, geez. 4-1 now. I know that doesn't guarantee any outcome, good or bad, but I'm bloody sick of these late inning comebacks by the cubs. I don't even want to contemplate another one.
  12. Did Z in fact melt down (throw a tantrum, or otherwise visibly crack)?
  13. Is it just Pick n Save in Milwaukee area, or would they have it in Madison too? In Madison, I have seen Secret Stadium Sauce at both Woodman's and the Hilldale Sentry. I can't speak for Pick n Save. We usually walk on the frugal side and either eat before we reach the park or stop for subs to carry in (saving the ballpark food for times when we're running late and don't have time to stop). However, once a year I treat myself to the cactus league nachos; and when we have our annual club seats, I get the turkey burger, which I like a lot. Early in the season, when it was cooler, I'd occasionally spring for the hot chocolate chip cookies. Speaking of pretzels, at the standalone Pretzel Pit stands you can get pretzels with non-salt toppings, like cinnamon sugar. Some of the toppings are more savory but at least they aren't those salt hunks (which are too much for me, too). Since those pretzels start off plain (until they dip them in butter and then the topping), I can't imagine they wouldn't sell you a plain one if you asked.
  14. I believe soy dogs are available at a couple of stands. I am almost certain one of them is Gorman's Grill. I assume that'd be close enough to a veggie dog for you, msc.
  15. Sharpie came through just as I'd hoped last night. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif Except he didn't get a plate appearance.
  16. (I passed along the Hawing communique) Oh, that's great. Thanks. Obviously it worked!
  17. I'd say the playoffs are worth it. Then again, obstructed views are kind of a way of life for a person my height.
  18. We gave him another month, spoiled him with love and Frosty Paws (he'd do anything for one of those) and then the day came. That brings back memories, burniebrewer. Our cat was diagnosed with a poorly placed and aggressive tumor and lasted about three weeks after that. We stopped the diet food, I can tell you that, and on "the day" got a tranquilizer for her so we could get her in the carrier and off to the vet without too much yowling. I wrapped the tranquilizer in ice cream, thinking, what's it going to do, kill her? That was a few weeks before Christmas, so the radio was playing nonstop Christmas songs. There are still a couple of songs I can't hear without remembering that day and tearing up.
  19. TLB, it wasn't until the Yuku migration (which enlarged the avatars) that I could even tell yours had Corey Koskie in it. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif It's kind of cool to see Doug Davis's dad start the in-game threads at dppb.org for his son's last 5, and now 6 starts. Yeah, except I believe that's been good luck for the D-backs. Either Sharpie has won each of those starts, or at least Arizona has won the games. I hadn't been looking and saw that he's now 10-10. Indeed, didn't Arizona start its white hot stretch just after getting pasted on that Thursday game in Miller Park in July? May the stretch come full circle (i.e. end) for them with this series, preferably tonight.
  20. If Sharpie owns the Brewers tonight, he and I are SO over. C'mon, Brewers. Gain a game.
  21. People who walk incredibly[/i] slow This happens to me regularly when I'm running errands on State Street in Madison. For example, I'm on a break from work and need to pick up something at the pharmacy; this often means I'm doomed to get stuck behind a group of visitors (vacation or "back to school" this time of year, Christmas shopping at the holidays, and WIAA tournament visitors in spring) who walk at a snail's pace. "Oooh, look at that (pointing to store window display)! A Bucky T-shirt! That's so cute!" Or, worse yet, they encounter another group coming the other way and manage to block the sidewalk in the process. Then I look like the bad guy for cutting through so I can get back to work. The WIAA tournament visitors almost (not quite) warrant a separate thread. Yeah, you own downtown Madison. That's great. Please move. And then there's the clink-clink-clink of the medals on the letter jackets. Apologies to any posters who competed in WIAA tourneys in Madison and actually did the clink clink clink thing.
  22. You know that episode where Sara Gilbert did the voice of the teenage girl who moved in next door to the Simpsons? Bart had a crush on her, and when she told him she had a boyfriend, he imagined her reaching over, pulling his heart out, and saying, "You won't be needing THIS anymore!" before drop-kicking it against the treehouse wall? That's how the Brewers are making me feel. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/frown.gif
  23. Tell Sharpie I said hi, and that any point he felt he had to make to the Brewers he made adequately in July.
  24. Sigh. I love mascots. Ozzie looks like one take-charge kind of cat. Not quite as take-charge as Bango, but no mascot is. Mass Haas beat me to the JJ birthday punch. Hey, Brewers, how's about you make something good happen Sunday?
