  1. We have a lot of threads that talk about what clutch is, how to define it, and if it's just random, etc, etc, etc. I tend to fall on the 'stat geek' side of the argument. Over large enough samples, the numbers show that players are who they are. Brauny though.........that guy seems to live for moments like this. I'm sure the numbers would prove me wrong, but that doesn't stop my perception from just recalling how he's come through time and again in these situations for us. It's like how every baseball playin kid in America dreams of the ultimate clutch situation, playing that scenario out in their head, game 7, world series, bottom of the 9th, down 3, bases loaded, 2 outs......and they come through every time. I know it sounds corny/cliched/whatever, but Braun's psyche appears to be absolutely built for moments like last night.
  2. If you lead the league in both average and homeruns, I would imagine it's all but a lock that you'll lead the league in SLG% as well. And unless the player takes a Yuni B bad amount of walks, he's also going to be top 3-5 in OBP% at worst. I just can't foresee a scenario where such a player would only be 'top ten or so' unless you HEAVILY weight defensive runs.
  3. Braun's awesome game defensively and offensively in a clinching effort will give him plenty of national pub I'm sure. Tonight will be a nice boost for his MVP candidacy.
  4. Ok, I'll give you that one. Early in the season when Nyjer was sac bunting in the first inning, I was throwing things at my tv and hurling insults at Roenicke. I will say this though, in that Yuni B bunting disaster, most people said "yes, bunt, but do it with someone that can actually bunt", and I even remember many of the so called 'stat geeks' saying such.
  5. One of the huge fallacies in this argument is that stat geeks seemingly don't appreciate the 'finer' points of baseball. Stat geeks, we're lead to believe, don't appreciate a well executed hit and run, a bunt in the 8th inning of a 1 - 1 game, or a stolen base in the same scenario, and that most incredulously, a stat geek would rather see a walk than a hit. These things are almost wholly untrue. As Russ has said, I've never seen anyone on this sight try to discount the mental aspect of the game. I've never seen anyone on this site indicate that there may be no more than 'luck' to variance, and that these things are not measurable. I have often seen discussions where something is brought up that is in fact, not measurable, and gets passed over. That doesn't mean the effect doesn't exist.
  6. This has to be at least to some degree some Pujols insurance. And fact of the matter is Berkman should NOT be playing outfield. He's been bad out there, and the numbers back it up. I think the Cards are really preparing for Pujols to be walking away.
  7. I'd pass. He's failed to put up an .800 OPS the last 2 years, and he's going to be 36. He's really showing signs of decline, and a .750 OPS 1st baseman should be had at just about league minimum. There's really no reason the Brewers (or just about any team, in all honesty) shouldn't be able to find a 1B who can put up at least an .800-ish OPS.
  8. Trade Wolf this off-season while he has some value, and free up some money. Heck, I'd be willing to throw in 2 - 2 1/2 mil, simply based on the production the Crew got from him this year.
  9. I didn't say he was another Suppan. I never even suggested it. I only said that the results he's getting this year are better than his performance would seem to indicate they should be. He was a bad pitcher from 2006 through 2008, and the Crew took a chance on his solid 2009 season, in which his BABIP was WAY down from his career norms and trends. I didn't think he'd be Suppan bad, but I also wasn't expecting much. For the first half of last year, he sucked. He had a nice second half, and he's been very good/lucky this year. He's limiting his walks, and keeping the ball in the park. At the end of the day, results really are all that matter, but I wouldn't look for the same results going forward. That's all I'm saying here.
  10. I think it's partly that people know that Wolf isn't as good as his results would indicate. Certainly he's had a great year for us, but often performance and the result of said performance don't always match up. Wolf's an average-ish pitcher having one of his better seasons, and I don't think too many people are going to expect the same results from him going forward.
  11. Big 12 better fire up the defibrillator, and get the life support machine running....... http://espn.go.com/colleg...as-tech-according-source
  12. That is crazy. In that small amount of time he is a 3.5 win improvement? That is impressive and depressing at the same time. I wonder what Taylor Green would be? To be fair, it's just as much a condemnation of how truly bad McGehee has been. Lawrie's a 2.7 WAR. If you times that over a full season, he's about an 8 WAR (MVP type season). Like I previously said, I don't think he's going to put up a .970 OPS over an entire season as a rookie, but I don't think an .800 - .825 is unreasonable. Surprisingly, he's a .8 WAR defensively so far. I realize that the sample size defensively is pretty small, but he's got an above average fielding percentage and UZR as it stands. I wouldn't be surprised next year to see a slash line from Lawrie around .340/.475/.815 with 25 homers. I'd guess that he'll be a 3-4 WAR player next year (and that's being 'safe').
  13. This is nitpicky as well but Lawrie would not have had that 150 games. Even if you bring him up when Toronto was going to before he got hurt in early July you definitely dont get a 150 games. He wasnt going to win the job over Casey in Spring Training and we had our own 3B prospect raking in the minors that took us a while to callupSo let's use just the numbers that exist. Lawrie has a 3.4 WAR advantage over McGehee, in just the short time he's been up. Marcum's a 3.3 WAR player for the entire season. Again, I'm not saying that I wouldn't do the trade if given teh opportunity again, I'm only calling into question that Lawrie would only be a 1-2 win improvement over McGehee. In just 50-ish games, he's almost 3.5
  14. I realize this is a bit nitpicky, but in 1/3rd a season, Lawrie's already at 2.7 WAR, and McGehee is at -.7. I realize that given a full season, I would expect Lawrie to regress some from his red hot start, but I don't think it's a stretch to say over 100 more games that Lawrie could put up another 1.5 WAR, making him a 5 win difference over McGehee if given a full season, and conservative estimates on how Lawrie would have performed over a full 150 games.
  15. I looked it up the other day.......and no. If he does it, he'll be the first.
  16. None of which dispels the notion that if there's an upgrade available, you should use it.
  17. Basically if you're a shortstop who can't hit worth a crap, you're going to be known as a 'slick fielder'.
  18. I'd just like to point out that Same Lecure has a sweet, sweet mustache. He could be in a western movie, no problem.
  19. I'd let Weeks play another few innings, but yeah for sure on Lucroy. Considering he doesn't ever actually get a real day off.
  20. Casey, please go back into the dugout and ask RR to bench you for the rest of the year.
  21. Well, far be it for me to get premature here, but I think we can start priming the "4's" for the magic number thread.
  22. Corey with the nice leg sweep even though the catcher was 5 feet from the plate. Nice.
  23. It's kinda sad that we're on the verge of a division title, and the 2nd best record in the NL, and I'm letting RR, Casey, and Yuni, take from my enjoyment of what has been a really fun season. I can't even help but just get angry seeing either of those 2 step in the batters box anymore, and then of course my anger boils over to RR for using them. That first inning is a microcosm of just that. First 5 batters reach base, and then Casey weakly flies out on the first pitch, and Yuni drives one all of about 15 feet in front of the plate.
  24. Oof. Only question was fair or foul. That ball was hit a LOOOOOOONG ways. That would have been out of Yosemite.
  25. Given that the Crew has never won a WS, I'm willing to take one however I can get it. Beating a 120 win Yankee team wouldn't make the first one any more special, at least for me.
