  1. Well, he's been quoted as saying that Latin players, in general, don't walk a lot because they have limited options to get noticed by scouts, and 'you don't get to the majors by walking'. Now that might have some kernel of truth to it, but you still have to have plate discipline, even if you don't walk a lot, and he has none whatsoever to speak of.
  2. As much as this sounds like it should be the punchline to a bad joke......this is the Brewer's reality. We have a .360 OPS catcher who HAS to play every 5 days for Randy Wolf. And the manager KNOWS how much he sucks, or he wouldn't be PHing for him the very first AB after Wolf leaves the game. If Wolf can't see how this is hurting the team, or Melvin, or Roenicke, they're ALL idiots and should be fired. There is NO reason this level of pandering should be going on for a #4 pitcher. Lucroy is essentially playing every day, and I don't know if his recent slump is attributable to that, but it sure can't be helping.
  3. I would like to see some of the swagger talked about in that article brought back to this team. I mean yeah, they look like they're 'having fun', but the bowling pin thing was great, the walk off hit by Hall where everyone IMMEDIATELY left the dugout was great, that sort of stuff. The 'untuckem'.......all that stuff was fun to see. Coffey Time too, was a good one.
  4. He's only going to face lefties if there's multiple lefties in a ROW up, and I don't know too many managers that do that. Might as well DFA Braddock, there's no use for him. EDIT: Just for curiosity's sake, I looked up Braddock's career splits. Righties do better against him, but they certainly don't murder him. Granted, it's a small sample (118 PA's), but a .270 BA against, with a .778 OPS against vs. righties (1 HR allowed) isn't the end of the world.
  5. Or he's just pandering to the #4 pitcher in the rotation, and sabotaging his chances of winning by putting a .360 OPS catcher out there for him. Inmates running the asylum.......never a good idea.
  6. It's always interesting to me what non-baseball thinking people will say about the decisions that hardcore old school guys like Roenicke make. My wife: "Why is Kotsay playing tonight instead of Morgan again?" Me : Kotsay is 3 for 10 lifetime against Dumpster, and he had a homerun against him, a few years ago I think" Wife: "That's just stupid. Just because he did something good 3 years ago doesn't mean he will now. He's old and he sucks". Me: ......................
  7. Very legitimate concerns. If Braun and Fielder both cool off at the same time, we're basically screwed. That's probably true of most teams with their 3/4 hitters, though. I still think McGehee will come around (some of his recent at bats have been encouraging), but I see no reason for optimism with Betancourt. I noticed Ron Roenicke was talking to him in the dugout after he popped out early in yesterday's game, and it appeared he was being rather stern with him. I have to imagine the manager is getting sick of his shortstop's terrible approach at the plate. I almost NEVER care about 'productive outs', but good lord, with a man on 2nd and nobody out, the weak pop up on the first pitch (and not a good pitch to hit at that) was just a microcosm of Betencourt's approach at the plate. (If you want to call it that) There's context for everything, and he just doesn't see that. He's up there to HIT, and that's that. His approach at the plate gives every indication that game situation makes no difference to him.
  8. Because I'm 110% sure Nieves will be playing tomorrow and no way in hell he runs him out there 2 days in a row. This is what having a #4 pitcher with a personal catcher does to your team. The fact that Roenicke is playing Lucroy on a Sunday after a night game is proof that he doesn't want Nieves playing two days in a row.......which is proof that he knows Nieves sucks tremendously, which is proof that there's a problem here, if Wolf absolutely CAN'T throw to Lucroy. This is getting to be beyond ridiculous.
  9. I'll bet those west coast games were fun for Atlanta tv and radio fans with their 10:00 pm start time. I'm not opposed to year long interleague....if truth be told, I could do away with interleague altogether, but that would cause one team in each league to be 'off' at all times. That might not actually be a bad thing, but you'd have to shorten the schedule somewhat.
  10. If he'd bat Hart 5 and Lucroy 6, there'd be no need to spread the crap out throughout the whole order. And yes, I understand that Lucroy's scuffling right now, but even a struggling Lucroy gives you a better opportunity for offense than Kotsay, Betancourt, or Mcgeehee.
  11. So they have a chance to kill a rally every inning, instead of just once every time around.
  12. Why? Why is Kotsay in CF again? Why is McGehee batting 5th? Do we not want to win today, and be in first?
  13. I have NEVER understood the thought process here. There's a bang-bang play at first base. I just for the life of me can't believe that the ump is thinking "Hm......this giuy came out earlier and busted my chops about a close play, I'll call this one the other way to even it out". A very good friend of mine is a college baseball ump (and no, this doesn't make me anymore qualified than anybody else here, just getting that up front right now), and he said the very first thing he was taught at ump school, and the point they really hammered home was 'make a call, make it quickly.' Basically, trust that what you saw with your eyes was the right thing. I guess I'm just pointing out something already obvious......the umps make calls right away. You don't see umps thinking about the play after they see it, they're just calling it right away.
  14. I would guess he was questioning the strikezone on the pitches before the homerun. It was a small strikezone tonight, but it was being called that way both ways.
  15. I honestly don't want any part of Fielder beyond a 5 year deal, and since he'll get more than that......... Guys with Fielder's body type just don't age well. I can't imagine paying him 22 mil or more per year in his age 33-34 seasons when he'll likely start to show sharp decline.
  16. I see the term 'hometown discount' thrown around a lot when people start talking about re-signing key players. (Not just here, everywhere). As someone else said, you don't hire Scott Boras as your agent if 'hometown discount' is part of your vocabulary. The deal Braun signed is extraordinary. How many guys do that though. Braun, Tulo.......a few others. There's not many guys LIKE Braun. That's why he's such a special player. Fielder has never, ever struck me as a guy who's interested in 'home town discounts' for the sake of sticking on a small to mid market team that has an occasional window of opportunity to contend.
  17. I think Kameron Loe begs to differ after last night. For the most part I've been fine with Roenicke, but that was a real head scratcher last night. His usage of Loe overall has been a head scratcher.
  18. As did I. I'm floored by how many people think he was a terrible in game tactician. The only thing I ever saw wrong with him was hsi lack of any discernable personality.
  19. I know you'd need a huge sample, but wouldn't W/L above or below expected be a good indication of a manager's ability to affect games? I know during Bobby Cox's tenure, the Braves were very consistently +3 or +4. I guess in a single season you could write that off as dumb luck, or even over several seasons, but if a manager is consistently on the positive side of the ledger, wouldn't that at least be the beginning of a talking point for his ability to squeeze wins out of the statistics? I'm not even talking about getting your players to play better, I'm just talking about pulling the right strings at the right times.
  20. Why would the Orioles want Betancourt?
  21. He's almost gotten a little too enamored with his base stealing (in my opinion of course), and needs to reign it in a little bit. I know Prince is a patient guy and he takes plenty of pitches, but at the same time, I don't want him taking pitches that he likes just for the sake of giving Braun time to run.
  22. Oh, I agree, but that wouldn't fit in the thread title! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif It's not just the slow trot, or the kiss, or the extreme sense of entitlement the kid displays, it's everything about him that you read, hear or see. It all adds up to a pretty ugly picture. I'm hopeful (but doubt that it will happen) that someone in the Wash. organization sits the kid down and has a talk with him. I don't idolize ballplayers (especially those half my age), I don't care about their character, or what they do off the field, but this kid's going to end up getting one in the earhole one of these days, and it'll be awfully hard to feel too bad about it.
  23. One big thing that's a positive is that for the most part, there's nobody on the Brewers that to this point has even mildly outperformed their expectations. Everyone is doing more or less what you'd expect out of them. Well, maybe Morgan, but that's a pretty small sample. Going forward, there's no reason to expect a regression to a mean for the team or any one player. In St. Louis, Lohse, and probably Berkman are far outpacing their ZiPS. Now Berkman has a history of being a great hitter, but I expect him to regress some, while Pujols will probably pick up the slack there. I just don't see the Cardinals as a .600 team.
  24. Money hit .284 with 16 homers and an .891 OPS in 1982. How is that brutal?
  25. I'm sure the $170 million dollars and the world series ring make up for the lack of cheers he gets.
