  1. Hey, like I said, regardless of Bonds' motivation (which none of us can really know), there's no doubt it was a great gesture. Regardless of how inconsequnecial the amount is to Bonds, it's obviously a very big deal to the Stow family. This doesn't change my opinion that Bonds is a lying jerkface, and my opinion is still that this donation was self serving in some regards, but the fact remains, he didn't have to do it, and it will positively affect these kids' lives. So.....kudos to you Mr. Bonds.
  2. Calls like that are always brilliant when they work. I just don't see how they double up Lucroy on that though. He's not a fast guy, but he's not 'catcher' slow, either. If Mota fields that clean, he still has to do a 180 turn to 2nd, and make a good throw, followed by beating Lucroy to first. I honestly don't see that happening, even if the Giants played it right.
  3. I can't watch the cartoon shows anymore. I used to be big on the Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park (as well as most of Adult Swim. Home Movies was the shizzle) Nowadays, stuff like Futurama, Family Guy, Cleveland Show, American Dad....just doesn't appeal to me at all. The jokes and whatnot are so recycled and tired. I'll still watch the Simpsons, but more often than not, most new episodes fail to elicit anything more than the occasional chuckle.
  4. Poor justifications for theft. 1.) "It's crappy music anyways. All the record companies push garbage on us these days". So why are you downloading it and listening to it? Just because something sucks, doesn't make it not theft if you take it without paying for it. The Bok choi in the produce section at the grocery store I go to has been nasty and rubbery for like 6 months now. Just because it's of poor quality doesn't mean I have the right to just take it. 2.) "It's how I discover unknown bands" That's all fine and well (while still being theft), but I highly doubt 'unknown bands' are comprising the vast majority of illegal downloads. Now, a few comments here. Obviously, if an individual or group *wants* to give away music (Radiohead, for example), that's awesome. If an unknown group is happy with just being heard, that's awesome. I was in a band in the mid 90's, and again in the mid 2000's, and both times we spent a lot of money on tapes (and then later cd's) that we'd self produce and just give out, and tell people to copy them and give to their friends. Getting heard at the early stages is far more important than making money. I just think that the justifications, no matter how noble, are still poor excuses for theft. If a person's not morally bothered by that, great. (And for the record, yes, I've downloaded music that I didn't pay for)
  5. Sadly, the cynic in me sees this as a possible attempt to just paint himself in a nicer public light. Regardless, it's great for the kids, and you should never look a gift horse in the mouth, or so they say.
  6. We finally have 3 catchers so we can pitch hit for our catcher and still have the emergency C for extra inning injuries. And we do this when we finally have a C that I don't want to be pitch hit for. We already have 2 back up middle IF's. The problem is one of them is starting every day at SSSo we still have a guy on the bench that we will absolutely not use unless it's an emergency, and it's not like either Mike Rivera or Nieves are going to be 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd choice to PH. If they wanted a RH pinch hitter, why not just bring up Katin? He's 28, it's not like he's a prospect who needs to be playing everyday to develop. He hits for big power, and takes some walks. Rivera does neither of those.
  7. SO............this guy is Betancourt with absolutely no power whatsoever. I get the 'warm body' argument, but this barely makes any sense.
  8. There's a lot of changes being brought up here, but I think in any one CBA, you're likely to only see a few. I'll rank the things I'd like to see, in order of my own inportance. 1.) Re-alignement. I don't care if we add 2 teams, cut 2 teams, or whatever, I just don't like having a 6 team division, and a 4 team division. 2.) Split revenue sharing of TV contracts. I'm not talking 100% revenue sharing. I'm not saying that the Yankees should have to give up the lion's share of like, the YES network, but I do think TV revenue should be part of the pot. 3.) Add a wild card. If we stay with 3 divisions, I like the idea of 2 wild cards playing a 3 game series for the right to advance. That way there's some 'penalty' for not winning the division. Obviously, I think this is prefaced by a drop to a 154 game schedule. 4.) Start actually enforcing the size guidelines on new ballparks. Everyone likes homeruns, but some of these tiny little bandboxes just suck. Every single team that's requested a break in the rule has been granted. 5.) DH. I honestly don't care if the leagues have a separate rule here. I don't want the DH brought to the NL, and I know they won't get rid of it, so I'd just as soon keep the status quo.
  9. I don't think it's possible to overstate how much it could help this offense to get another big power bat in there everyday. Kotsay got on base at an ok clip, he wasn't 'killing' the offense, but Hart's obviously got the potential to create a lot more runs that I'd expect Kotsay to from here on out. With McGehee not really hitting the longball (though he is cracking a lot of doubles), getting Hart's bat not only back, but fully functional, should get this offense rolling along more like last year's version.
  10. When a guy has a 29/2 K/BB ratio, it's hard to NOT imagine luck playing a role in a guy having his ERA. Yeah, he threw a bad pitch to a pitcher. Yes, he's given up more homeruns than wouldn't be expected. Like someone else said, the BABIP at this point is outrageously high. Anything can happen over a small sample, and that's exactly what's happened here so far.
  11. Ugh. 3-4 more Nieves plate appearances, I mean.......outs. It didn't even bother me that Rivera got the start when I was there Friday, but why is Nieves still getting starts? And clearly, Wolf is going to have to get over whatever problems it is he has with Lucroy.
  12. That's exactly my point. Frankly, no one will convince me that Punto isn't horrible and worse than Betancourt- we all can agree to disagree on that. As for the second guessers, I don't get it- If Punto had played in every game at shortstop with solid defense and was hitting over .300, I could see the 20/20 hindsight. In reality, he can't stay healthy and has played one game at shortstop, so this argument makes no sense. In the end, Alcides has been horrible at the plate this year. Had the Greinke trade not been made, he would have been 'penned in' as the starter. No matter how much you hate Betancourt, it would be tough to argue that he's not at least been a push with 2011 Escobar.I agree with the bolded part. THIS YEAR, yes, it's very debatable which one helps a team more. Going forward, I think more people would want Escobar, simply because he has a ceiling that he hasn't (and admittedly may not) reach. He could get better. He may not, but he could. Betancourt is at an age where you can look at his very best seasons, and see that those are clearly in the rearview mirror at this point. But again, I digress, both of them have more or less completely sucked this year, and it's a coin toss to which one you'd rather have I guess.
  13. I realize this is splitting hairs, but I think you can read between the lines and see in my post where I said 'he's not healthy'. I guess I needed to say "IF HEALTHY, Punto would be an ok choice for SS everyday? I realize that's a little bit of context, but it's all right there and I thought, quite easy to read.
  14. Punto has never been a full time anything. He's got 2155 innings at 3rd base, and 2041 at SS, and 1980 at 2B. So if he IS qualified to play everyday (questionable) I don't think it's outrageous to say that he could play SS everyday. He's played just 114 more innings at 3rd base than at SS, and his fielding numbers (always taken with a grain of salt) along with fan and scouting reports make me believe that he would be, at bare minimum, adequate for 120 games or so at SS for a full season. Now Punto was not my first, second, or even third choice, but I would take him (when healthy) over Betancourt any day of the week. This is all moot, as Punto's not a Brewer, and not healthy, but to suggest he's not capable of playing SS full time is just not true.
  15. I was at the game Friday, and that'd be my choice for the 'defining moment' so far, if this indeed the beginning of a turning point. There was a viable buzz in the stadium all night, even as the game dragged through to the 14th. The fans didn't quiet down much, and it was a really great atmosphere.
  16. What could he 'work on' that he hasn't already had a chance to figure out in 1,600 major league plate appearances? Absolutely nothing has changed about the guy's skillset, or approach. He absolutely is what he is at this point. His OBP is right in line with career averages (about .290-ish), he steals some bases, and plays good defense. Expecting a stint in AAA to change that........probably not gonna happen. I can live with his offense when he's batting 8th (and much moreso if we didn't have Betancourt, but that's another story). Gomez is contributing with defense. No reason to send him down.
  17. That depends how you define "well". He's a bench player - I'm not expecting him to go out and make the All-Star team. You don't think a .758 is hitting well for a guy who rarely plays and carries low expectations? If he can replicate his Atlanta numbers, I'll be ecstatic.Except he's not rarely playing, he's playing quite often. At this point, I can understand not arguing the results. A .758 OPS is more than they're *currently* getting out of Hart, Gomez, or anyone else in the OF not named Ryan Braun. I think when/if/when Kotsay starts to regress towards his expected numbers, if he continues to get regular playing time A.) Over Hart, or B.) In center field, then there will be something to seriously gripe about. And really, it shouldn't be 'when', but 'right now' that Hart stops getting benched in favor of Kotsay. Yes, the results show us that at this point, Kotsay has been more productive offensively, but I don't think anybody realistically expects Kotsay to touch Hart offensively.
  18. Well, Counsell's putting up a .333 OBP, and I'll just completely disagree that Betancourt is 'above average' defensively. He's made a few flashy plays that impress people. That throw he made lastnight was awesome, but that doesn't mean he's overall been above average.
  19. Ok, I understand that Counsell's an older guy, and can't play everyday. But good lord, if Grampa Counsell can't buck up and play a full game 2 - 3 days a week, then maybe it's time to hang up the spikes.
  20. Just giving him the once-over, I don't see anything more than a utility guy there really. He doesn't hit much at all. I can't see him sticking at the big league level unless he develops SOMETHING (ability to take a walk, a little power) that gives him a modicum of offensive value.
  21. Farris doesn't take walks, and doesn't hit for power. He's OBP-ing under .300 right now. Don't know much about his glove though. Wheeler's got nice OBP skills, takes a lot of walks and he does have some pop in his bat. He's also maintaining his rate stats consistently as he climbs up the ladder, which is a good thing of course. The thing that concerns me is he's a big dude, not really cut out for shortstop, and the things I've read and seen indicate that SS is not really a position he's going to end up at. 3B seems more his spot eventually.
  22. Really sad day for the Twins, and all of baseball. Got to 'meet' Harmon once (and when I say 'meet', I mean, I shook his hand, and said glad to meet you') but like everyone else has said, all I've ever heard was stories about what a nice, classy, stand up dude he was. RIP Harmon.
  23. I saw that among all NL position players ranked by WAR, as of yesterday, Gomez is in at #30 at .9 WAR. The guy has been unbelievable on defense this year, but I just can't even imagine that his glove is saving THAT many runs above replacement, also taking into account his awful offensive 'contribution'. This is a huge reason defensive statistics need such a large sample size (some say 3 years) before they really become definative. And of course, even then, the methodology of compiling those stats is sketchy at best.
