  1. The good news: The offense bails out the pitching more often than not. The bad news: The pitching had needed to be bailed out a lot more than hoped for.
  2. I think Scott Sunitsch is going to be a fast riser. His Wisconsin numbers last year were impressive, and if he continues that pace this year... he could be good.
  3. Shaw and Aguilar are not going to be automatic outs for the whole season. Their track record is too much in the other direction for that. It's only 12 games. Let's at least get through the next 13 before we panic.
  4. I'd probably counter that with: Tigers get: RHP Nate Griep RHP Adam Hill RHP Bubba Derby Brewers get: RHP Shane Greene RHP Brian Garcia And I'll counter with: Orioles get: 3B Lucas Erceg RHP Aaron Wilkerson RHP Bowden Francis SS C.J. Hinojosa Brewers get: RHP Alex Cobb 3B Ryan Mountcastle IF Jean Carmona I see you throw Wilkerson's name into prospective deals all the time? Why is this? Who is going to see a 30-year-old AAAA tweener who needs a 40-man spot as any sort of asset? Because while a team may be trying to rebuild with prospects, they still need a major league roster. Wilkerson is a high-end AAAA pitcher. Maybe he doesn't fit well with a healthy Brewers team, but as cheap rotation filler for a rebuilding team like Baltimore or Miami, he makes a ton of sense - buying time for them. If he catches lightning in a bottle - great, sell high, get some more prospects. If he's okay - you have 3-4 cheap years of someone who can at least keep the team in a game. If he flames out... well, he didn't hurt your payroll flexibility that much and you'll likely get a better draft pick.
  5. This was why not releasing Garza before 2017 was a mistake. Woodruff was ready to be a major-league starter then, and 2017 was the year for him to have those growing pains. He would have been a prime piece of the 2018 rotation. The young guns have growing pains... Peralta needs more than fastballs. Burnes needs to hone his third and fourth pitches. The question is whether the Crew can weather those and repeat as division champs. I think the answer is yes, but it may be closer than we'd all like it to be.

  7. Bleacher Report had some knee-jerk trade ideas: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2830092-knee-jerk-mlb-trade-ideas-after-2019s-opening-weeks The one involving the Brewers has them going for Alex Cobb, who has three years and had a hot second half of 2018. They cited the early struggles of Woodruff and Burnes. Well, for me, Cobb is a hard pass. Costs too darn much, and the price in prospects is too darn high. Burnes and Woodruff will even out, and it's gonna do the Crew no good over the long haul to get Cobb. On the other hand, Shane Greene, who Bleacher Report wanted the Cubs to trade for, is a very intriguing option. He's under control through 2020, and he'd bolster the bullpen, which could use a little help. Here's what I'd do: Tigers get: RHP Bubba Derby RHP Nate Griep C Mario Feliciano Brewers get: RHP Shane Greene $2 million in international bonus money This not only bolsters the Brewers bullpen, it will deny the Cubs the bullpen help. Let them overpay for Kimbrel - the Crew will have Greene cheaper, and the Cubs will be in an even bigger financial hole.
  8. I agree. It's a combo of bad luck, and making the adjustment to being a major-league starter.
  9. Hopefully with all the rest, might even need to bring him in next inning if we get into trouble Well, they sent Chatwood out for another inning... so maybe the Crew tees up and gets a bigger lead.
  10. Arcia has hit pretty well the last few games and raised his season OPS to .744. Everyone knows you hate the guy, but give him credit where it's due at least. Forgot the blue...
  11. Didn't get get rocked in SA already this year? Yeah ... but at this point, there aren't a ton of decent options, unless they want to add a guy to the 40-man roster. The only pitchers in the minors on the 40-man are Diplan, Donnie Hart, Adrian Houser, Petricka, Trey Supak, and Aaron Wilkerson. Houser just started on Thursday, Supak last night. I suppose Wilkerson could be an option, but I would guess it'll be Petricka or Hart. My hope is that they put Knebel on the 60-day DL and purchase Sanchez's contract. Surprised that didn't happen earlier. Really, they need to DFA Albers and Wilkerson, send Taylor Williams to San Antonio to sort himself out, and then sign Kimbrel and get Houser and Sanchez up.
  12. We're paying with losses today to get an ace later on. Hate that it's against the Cubs, but...
  13. Hopefully, threy'll need them. If the Crew just keeps it close, who is the first option for the Cubs in the late innings? Brach after 31 pitches yesterday? Kintzler on a back-to-back? Strop for a multi-inning save opp? Nice to have the more rested bullpen, with Wilson, Guerra, and Hader all real fresh. Barnes too. Of course, I'd just as soon to do Hamels what they did to Quintana last night. Go Crew! If the Crew does that, and if Burnes can pitch something akin to what Freddy did on Wednesday... they have a good chance to sweep this series - and put the Cubs in a hole. Six more wins... more free burgers.
  14. Man... I kinda wish they had Korry Howell there, too.
  15. Aguilar's been someone I think could be a kind of Eric Thames replacement - albeit with better outfield defense. He's had OBP skills, and he has some speed, plus he flashed some power. The hit for average tool has lagged, though.
  16. It's nice to see the power he was showing in the spring according to the game recaps is carrying over. More impressive to me is the no whiffs over two games.
