  1. Looks like baseball has its own "Michael Vick" problem. Breitbart TV has a 52-second video of Pedro Martinez participating in a cockfight in the Dominican Republic. Looks like the Mets are going to have a black eye.
  2. OK... how do you want to find out an ump's a KKK member? MLB turns it up on their own, or they get surprised!
  3. No... not a blunder. If they can sign Bedard to an extension, it's a good move for them, especially if they can keep him and Hernandez as a 1-2 punch at the top of their rotation for a few years.
  4. I would say VERY. This is a chance to set the tone for the NL Central race. They edged us last year, so roaring into 2008 is probably necessary.
  5. The rotation's pretty easy: Sheets, Gallardo, Suppan, Villanueva, and Capuano in that order. The bullpen is a bit more complicated: Gagne's the closer, with Turnbow as his backup and sharing the 8th inning with Riske. Riske shares the 7th inning with McClung (who seemed to do OK in his stint with the Crew in `07), and Torres. Shouse splits time between being a LOOGY and handling the 7th. Dave Bush and Manny Parra handle long relief and spot starting.
  6. I think there is a difference between playing with pain, and playing through and injury. Hall had a pretty serious injury, and for him to come back to early from it, hurt the team more than helped. Estrada was also playing through an injury that I'm sure hurt the team. I have never had blisters on my fingers so I have no clue how painful they are, but I'm sure it hurts like hell to throw a baseball or put spin on a baseball. Ripping a player for not playing through those injuries is just silly. Now if you're not playing because you have a head ache or your legs are sore or any other thing that is minor, I can see getting on someone for that. Just not for injuries Estrada took a lot of heat for his performance, and then was moved for a liability in the bullpen. Hall also came back and tried to help. I hope he's not on the way out. I'd rather see him in center, with Hart in left and Gross in right.
  7. Rule 10.22? How exactly does that work again?
  8. Agreed. We just downgraded at catcher, and added a reliever who gives up gopher balls. Now, Mota's numbers got distorted somewhat by one outing where he got lit up like a Christmas tree (0.2 IP, 6 ER), but that meant his ERA would "only" be 4.90. Unless we have some magic, Mota's gonna be lit up.
  9. Link A guy whose lowest ERA since 2004 was 4.53 is going to be a key member of the bullpen? Oh, man, this is gonna be bad!
  10. But why move Estrada at all? If 2007 was disappointing, I'd like to see how he'd rebound in his contract year (even then, he only dropped two extra base hits from 2006 to 2007). I think the answer (Kendall with a .610 OPS + Mota and a 5.76 ERA) is worse than the "problem" (Estrada and a .700 OPS).
  11. And coming off a steroid suspension? Man, I really feel bad about this trade.
  12. Got the text message from MLB.com Mota's BR page: http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/motagu01.shtml Estrada's BR page: http://www.baseball-reference.com/e/estrajo01.shtml First thought: I think Doug got taken for a ride here... Mota, pitching half the time in Shea Stadium, posted a 5.22 ERA there, and an ERA of over 6 on the road (total 2007 ERA: 5.76). He's not posted an ERA+ over 100 since 2004. This is bullpen help? I'd rather call on Wes Obermueller.
  13. Ick. Use Rottino as the #2 in that case.
  14. Think they'd be willing to take Vargas and Mench for Yamai and two PTNBL in a trade? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  15. In 1987, he hit well over .250. IIRC, it was .332. Great year, even if he didn't get as many ABs as I'd have liked.
  16. Get the DH. It means you have Prince at DH, LaPorta at first, and no excuse to NOT lock Prince up for ten to twelve years.
  17. From May on, the Brewers had injuries. It wasn't just Rickie's wrist flaring up. It was Capuano's groin pull, Ben's finger injury, Bill Hall's high-ankle sprain, and Graffanino's knee injury. There was plenty of DL time to go around. Just as important as his power coming back was the jump in his walk rate. We knew the wrist was going to gie him some trouble. But the walk rate... any time a lengthy season slump with a .235 average leads to a .374 OBP. Had the same differential (OBP-BA) appeared in 2006, Rickie's OBP would have been .418. This means that when he does "slump", he'll still get on base at a decent clip - and his 25-for-27 track record on the basepaths (59-for-68 career) tells me he will still do a lot of damage. Offer both him and Prince 10-year, $90 million contracts. They'd be bargains.
  18. Give Gross full-time PAs in RF, and I bet he'll do at least as good as Jenkins has over the last three years. He's got great OBP skills.
  19. In general, the offense was what went right, followed by a large chunk of the rotation (Suppan, Gallardo, Villanueva). In essence, the depth of the rotation made 83 wins possible. Had the health been as good as the depth, we'd be talking about the first playoff team since 1982. Plug Gabe Gross in right, move Hart to left, and is the Brewers' offense any worse than it was this year? I think it'll be even better.
  20. Even then, I'm not going to criticize a guy for going with gut instinct/feeling. One can never tell with a lot of things in baseball. If stats were the end-all and be-all, then the 1969 Mets would have been destroyed in the World Series by the Orioles. Or how about the 1988 World Series, where the Dodgers were pretty much outclassed by the A's - at least on paper. I think we all know how those turned out. The Mets won in `69, and the A's never recovered from that walk-off homer in Game 1 in 1988.
  21. I vote yea. The talent was there - and Yost cannot stop Sheets, Capuano, Graffanino, Weeks, and Hall from getting hurt. Take away two of those injuries, and the Brewers are division champs and in the post-season. The injuries are enough for me to give him another year.
  22. Starters: 2B: Weeks SS: JJ 3B: Ryan 1B: Fielder RF: Hart CF: Hall LF: Gross/LaPorta C: Estrada Bench: Rivera, Rottino, Counsell, Dillon, Gross/LaPorta, Gwynn Rotation: Sheets, Gallardo, Suppan, Capuano, Villanueva Bullpen: Bush, Turnbow, Parra, McClung, Shouse, Wise
  23. As a counter-point, if Gallardo's arm fell off in 2009, as Kerry Wood's has, we'd probably be complaining. One division crown in 2007 for Gallardo giving the Brewers 8-10 seasons, most as a legit #1.
  24. CL Turnbow SU McClung MR Bush MR Parra MR Wise LOOGY Shouse LR Dillard
  25. McClung's actually had a GOOD September. I think he might surprise next spring.
