  1. Molitor was inducted in 2004, the rule was put into place in 2001. Molitor made the statement when his number was retired. That happened several years before the rule was put in place. I don't see where anyone should expect Paul to work for the Brewers. But it'd be nice if he showed a presence once in a while. Aaron has been quite active in Milwaukee, even though he's been an employee of the Braves throughout his post-playing career. I'm not a huge fan of statues. But putting that aside, I agree with the statement above that the Brewers shouldn't run the risk of being over-statued. As far as Molitor, he's as good a player as anyone, and he certainly deserves the honor of having his number retired. But when it comes to the total package, his contributions to Milwaukee and its teams don't match those of Aaron, Yount, Selig, and Uecker. Some of that isn't his fault, but "fault" doesn't really matter.
  2. If you want to debate the pluses and minuses of the extra Wild Card, please use this topic: MLB Playoffs to expand in 2012
  3. Didn't Sal Bando swoop in and pick both of those guys up from the Mets on the cheap? Yeah, they both became Brewers. Pete Harnisch was acquired for Donnie Moore on August 31, 1997, and pitched 14 innings in one relief appearance and three starts. He signed with the Reds as a free agent that winter. Donnie Moore played for a season in Beloit, then dropped off the map. This isn't the Donnie Moore who shot his wife, then committed suicide. (That Donnie Moore was also a Brewer at one point.) Bill Pulsipher was acquired on July 31, 1998, for Mike Kinkade, an overrated prospect who had a rather nondescript Major League career. Pulsipher was traded back to the Mets on January 21, 2000, for Luis López. Valentine was still managing the Mets at that point.
  4. This isn't the first time that Valentine's comments about players have come into question. In the late 1990s, he had two clinically depressed players on the same team. He told the press that he thought they should be playing while receiving treatment. He ended up being ordered to cut off contact with one of the players because he was interfering with that player's recovery. That's enough for me to not want to see him managing. Having said that, I'd love to see the reporter's question and the full answer before completely faulting Bobby in this particular case.
  5. It's not really arbitration anymore, don't you have to offer a contract worth more than $11 million? Isn't it offering a contract over the average of the top whatever number of players (I want to say 150) which determines compensation or not? Yeah, it's something like that. Arby has no bearing on compensation anymore, and that's the important part. I believe that arby could still come into play if the player and team commit to the player returning for a year.
  6. You already figured out the answer, but LL moved a few hours after Brewerfan. And yes, Yuku folded, spindled, and mutilated our old boards. It's now against their terms of service to move. I kid you not.
  7. I don't think the importance of Jackie Robinson can be underestimated, and I wouldn't use the word "overkill" because that isn't really a problem. An annual day to commemorate his contributions is definitely in order. I do think that the methods of observing his entry into the big leagues can be examined, though. Certainly, there should be a pre-game observance. And while doing something with the uniforms makes sense, I agree with hawing that every player wearing #42 gets old. Putting the number on a jersey patch or caps would work for me, as would banners or special artwork on the grass (behind home plate or in center field).
  8. I don't see anything pathetic at this point. Last night's attendance was 30,169 and tonight's was 31,659. These were the numbers for the first nine regular season games at Miller Park: [pre]Friday, April 6, 2001 42,024 Saturday, April 7, 2001 40,651 Sunday, April 8, 2001 34,077 Tuesday, April 10, 2001 23,577 Wednesday, April 11, 2001 26,021 Thursday, April 12, 2001 23,599 Friday, April 13, 2001 34,998 Saturday, April 14, 2001 42,080 Sunday, April 15, 2001 25,981[/pre]
  9. This is pretty much already being talked about in the other Greinke thread, so not sure if this will stay open. It's a good topic though. For the thread to stay open, it should focus on this: if they lose Greinke, what should the plan be? In other words, for the purposes of this topic, we should assume Zack is gone. If it's a rehash of whether or not Zack should be re-signed, it'll be unnecessary duplication.
  10. Yellow is, um, well, definitely yellow and definitely not gold (and yuck on that for just that reason). Remember the uproar a few years ago when the Packers wanted to change the mustard yellow color on their uniforms to a truer gold?
  11. I'll bet that some do that, but think of how great this deal would be for those who couldn't otherwise afford 8 tickets or were able to go to another game or two simply because of the deal.
  12. Gmail just force me into their awful new interface. It uses icons instead of words, functions disappear unless Gmail thinks I'm actually going to use them, I have to hover over my labels to see the full list, and the colors are so washed out that it's hard to tell what's what. I have to wonder how this mess would work on a touch screen.
  13. I think it looks great. TLB. Where do you think it's inadequate?
  14. The one you have looks like navy to me. I've attached one that's darker, but the gold also changes. I'm not sure that's what you want, but if you wish to use it, the background would need to be made transparent and the image would need re-sizing. Maybe you can find a sample on the Internet that we can work with.
  15. It seems to be working fine now.
  16. I just got kicked out of one waiting room. I guess this was predictable, but I didn't have trouble with the similar offers the past two years.
  17. I have three browsers in the waiting room and a fourth where I try "fresh" occasionally.
  18. I see that if you try to enter now, tickets.com is "unavailable."
  19. I'm in the virtual waiting room now.
  20. It must be overload. I'm going to keep trying. I used two browsers too.
  21. I keep getting "We're sorry, we were unable to process your request. Please try again."
  22. I can't get too concerned about an announcer's voice as long as the information being delivered is useful and appropriate.
  23. I still haven't heard more than a wee bit of Block, but based on some of the comments, I was wondering if the Brewers' unusual radio format could possibly be coming into play. Normally, you'd see two guys in the booth all the time, either two play by play guys or a play by play/color combination. The flip side is that you'd think that with all his experience, working alone would have been part of it. But I guess the difference would be that in this case, he'd be working alone a lot — along with working with a partner that isn't in the booth with him very much.
  24. "CAH-stro" would be the correct native pronunciation. However, if he's saying "cos-tro" (as in "cost"), that would be strange. In Carlos' case, the correct native pronunciation would be bel-TRAHN. When properly spelling his name, there's an accent over the "a" in the second syllable (Beltrán). BEL-trahn would get the vowels right, but it would misplace the stress. The short "a" sound that you hear in "cat" doesn't exist in Spanish.
