  1. Can we trade him before his arbitration hearing? Technically he is not under contract. If we can't trade him until February it may affect the offseason moves. According to the rules, being offered and accepting arbitration is the same as agreeing to a contract. The only thing that's missing is the amount of compensation. As someone mentioned above, I don't see any reason that he couldn't be traded now. The arbitration responsibility would be passed on to the next team. One of the articles pointed out that by the time the team paid a new setup man and bonuses to two draft picks, it'd already be looking at $8 million. It may be that the monetary issue isn't as big as it seems. The fact that K-Rod is a really good player also needs to be considered. Overpaying for a superb player isn't the same as paying an eight digit salary for someone who's a liability.
  2. The rating is like a percentage. The total number of households would be an indicator of the number of viewers. I recall that a couple of years ago, the Brewers' total number of viewers was in the top half of MLB for a while. That would be phenomenal.
  3. This certainly deserves a topic of its own, but it's been brought up in another thread which contains already contains several pages of relevant discussion. If I could find a logical way to split that thread, I would, but since I can't, I won't. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Discussion of the K-Rod trade talk begins here: http://brewersfandemonium...epts-Payrol#reply-790975
  4. I understand every word of the "One Semester of Spanish Spanish Love Song." http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif As jerichoholicninja says, I think you'll find a fair amount of people who speak a reasonable level of English. But it's probably not as predominant as you'd find in the resort cities. As you go along, you'll probably find that you remember things you talk about all the time, e.g. la llave (the key), agua purificada (purified water), etc. As a quick hint, "Quisiera" (I would like) is a lot more polite than "Quiero" (I want). That's really easy to start using. Also, if your Spanish is convincing enough, people do notice when you use the familiar (tu vs. su, tú vs. usted). You should use su or usted most of the time. If you're having a beer with someone, use tu or tú. Don't worry too much, though. Even if your Spanish is a mess, people are happy to see you make the effort to try to use it.
  5. The posts in this topic, including the lead above, have been merged into the 2012 lineup thread.
  6. It's been years since I've been there, but Mexico City was a lot of fun the two times I went. JonnyLungs is right about the air pollution. Somewhere I heard that being there is like smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. The really odd thing is that it lifts at night and on Sundays because most of the cars are off the road. I don't think Mexico City is susceptible to daily rain this time of year, but you'll definitely want to check out what to expect weather-wise before you go. In the summer, it pours daily in the late afternoon. It's amazing how hard it is to purchase an umbrella when you really need one. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I don't recall any issues when communicating with people. My Spanish isn't very good, but if someone's English is as good as my Spanish, we seem to do fine. Pocket translators are pretty inexpensive these days, and if you have a smartphone or an iPod Touch, I'd guess that there are decent translation apps available. The worst thing is talking on the phone because you can't get by with pointing at things. As far as safety goes, if you check stats, I think you'll find that Mexico City is safer than major US cities. As in any large city anywhere, however, you'll want to safeguard yourself from pickpockets.
  7. Harry Morgan of TV comedy 'M*A*S*H' dies, 96 He played Colonel Potter on M*A*S*H, Bill Gannon on Dragnet, and appeared in countless films and TV shows.
  8. My first thought is that there must be someone out there who's more worthy. There are generally guys out there who aren't that well known nationally, but once you see the case for them, you jump on board. The Hardball Times article says that Tim used to be good. I can't remember that.
  9. I think you and Mrs. NeedMoreFans need to start a new tradition that would involve celebrating by yourselves out of state.
  10. I thought the Veterans Committee elected many players, but not really in recent times. The old Veterans Committee was kind of a super-secret group that some thought was overly generous. It was replaced by the Veterans Committee described in reply #6 in 2001.
  11. You can't rely mainly on the writers. While many take the vote seriously, others fail to make the effort to do their homework, and some simply draw the wrong conclusions. The current Veterans Committee (all living members of the Hall of Fame, Ford C. Frick Award winners, and J. G. Taylor Spink Award winners) seemed to be a good idea. But it hasn't elected anyone, and Ron Santo seemed to be the poster child omission. There's probably no harm in letting it continue to operate, though. Disbanding it would be pretty awkward. The Golden Era committee involves a Historical Overview committee. The use of historians appears to be a necessary component to help with the homework. We saw an example of that with the special Negro League election a couple of years ago; it was apparent that worthy candidates were being overlooked simply because the voters didn't know enough about them.
  12. Yeah, it appears that this is a new committee. This would be the new Golden Era Committee. This would be separate from the Veterans Committee, which, if I recall correctly, hasn't elected anyone at all. There's also a special committee for Pre-World War II players. And I think the Negro League committee is still around. I don't have an issue with having several ways to elect a player. You'd hate to see someone omitted that deserves induction.
  13. I think this is well deserved and something that should have happened long ago. It's too bad that it had to happen after his death. If I remember correctly, Ron's the first player that this newly created committee has chosen. (see reply #6)
  14. Do we have enough data from that era to give defensive stats any credibility at all?
  15. We're paying again, but Yuku can't tell us what we're being charged for. Messages exchanged over the past couple of days… What we're paying for is certainly something that we're entitled to know, and it's something that Yuku's legally obligated to disclose. It used to be a simple answer to a simple question: you're charged for views on thread and search pages. I can't believe that Yuku has put themselves in this situation. They've messed up badly in the past, but previous disasters haven't involved money. Not being able to tell us what we're paying for is beyond belief. Saying "the same as before" is meaningless when nobody knows what "before" is. This is really the worst mess-up since we moved to Yuku and the worst mess-up since almost all of our data was lost in 2005.
  16. Poking around the web, it does appear that while this treatment would appear to have value, there definitely are dentists who are trying to push it on patients who won't benefit from it. That isn't the case with all dental diagnoses, though. The ones directly related to teeth are pretty obvious. Cavities, root canals, and crowns need to be taken care of.
  17. Thanks! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif It's logical that things would vary from case to case. My main concern was that the system wouldn't try to access the non-boot drive while I wasn't actually doing anything with it. Actually, I'm less concerned now. I've figured out how to make the second drive not mount at startup by editing fstab (in the /ect) folder). That would prevent the system from attempting to access it simply because it's available.
  18. Small cavities might not show up in x-rays, especially if the x-rays were taken before your teeth were cleaned. Cavities don't normally cause pain by themselves, but if you want some proof that they're there, the dentist can create some pain with his little pick thinger. Get them fixed. They're not going to heal, and they're guaranteed to get worse with time. I'd have no clue about the "special" fluoride.
  19. I used to be on the Lee Smith bandwagon, but as the years go on with closers, his career doesn't look so good. Before deciding on a yea or nay, I think it' necessary to look at the context of his career. Over half of it came before the closer's role was invented.
  20. Saying that "oral surgery is horrible" is hardly an explanation for why you may need this treatment. You should have been provided with an explanation detailing what this is supposed to fix or prevent and why you're a candidate for it. As far as the cost, a thread on dentalfearcentral.org says that "it's done with a small blunted needle, which does NOT break the skin." Maybe the cost involved is with the equipment that's used. It's certainly legit to ask why a procedure costs what it does. I think I'd ask what the consequence of waiting until your next exam would be. At that point, you could visit your wife's dentist. Also, $376 for a cleaning and exam sounds high. I have to wonder if the gum treatment (if needed) would be cheaper elsewhere. As an aside, I had oral surgery a few years ago (a tooth implant), and it wasn't unpleasant at all. Novocaine and gas did the trick. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Of course, not all oral surgeries are created equal.
  21. Bobby fulfilled the terms of his contract, so he isn't earning the money for doing nothing. The Madoff twist is the problem.
  22. In my MacBook Pro, I'm considering: Adding an SSD to run the OS and for my main storage.Removing the DVD burner and putting the current 7200 RPM hard drive in that spot. The current hard drive would be used for overflow storage, and I wouldn't access it very often. I'd like to know if this arrangement will result in my battery lasting longer between charges. This is the answer I got from a sales person: Thanks!
  23. Was the old rule, the player was guaranteed 25% or 33% if it went to arby? The rule is the same for all non-guaranteed contracts. There's a cutoff point in the middle of spring training where the player can be cut and receive one sixth of his pay. The date varies a little bit from year to year. If he's cut between mid-spring training and opening day, he receives one fourth of his pay. If he's on the opening day roster, the contract becomes guaranteed.
  24. It now appears that this conclusion was drawn erroneously. Upon further review, it wasn't an error. There are boards that haven't had ads turned off and haven't had any attempts by Yuku to correct billing errors. Of course, making adjustments only for communities that complain would be illegal. We've been billed for two out of the past forty-one days. And the two days we were billed for were hopefully wrong. A company can't do business that way.
  25. I haven't noticed anything today, but yesterday it was slow enough for staff to acknowledge that it was a problem.
