  1. It seems to me that the Brewers wouldn't be wasting an option at all. If a player is in the minors for less than 20 days, no option is used. He accrues Major League service time instead.
  2. Being tied out isn't natural for a dog. It's something you do in a pinch or for a short period. But if your dog doesn't adapt to it well, it shouldn't be a surprise. If your dog needs to be kept confined, a crate or kennel is a much better option.
  3. Moved to Transactions forum: http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?t=23188
  4. Harvey Kuenn had been around as a Brewers coach under several managers going back to Del Crandall. He was hired in 1971, so that actually takes him back to the Bristol regime. There could be a discrepancy among sources as far as officially listing him as "coach," though. There was a four-coach limit at the time he was hired, and before Kuenn, teams didn't specifically employ hitting coaches. The four-coach limit is what lead to Harvey being put on the playing roster in September, 1971. His position wasn't included in the pension plan, and putting him on the roster allowed him accrue time. Of course, even though he didn't play, nobody figured in that his Hall of Fame eligibility would be delayed until 1977 because of that roster move. Sorry for going way off topic. Carry on. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  5. I'm not sure where Apple could make this clearer than putting it on their website, but it would have been nice to know ahead of time that I should have deauthorized iTunes before reformatting my hard drive and installing a new OS. If you don't, your old installation still counts as one of your five authorized computers. I was able to deauthorize after the fact because I could boot from an external hard drive that was a "clone" of the previous installation. I don't think the majority would find themselves in that position. The usual solution is to log in and follow a process that deauthorizes all of your computers; Apple only allows that once a year.
  6. From Trenni's MLB Network biography:
  7. It bothers me that Valentine had two clinically depressed players on the same team and couldn't figure out why they needed to be on the disabled list. Along with that, things were bad enough that he was ordered not to have contact with one of those players.
  8. While it's possible that "beat" rather than "bead" could be a typo, I think it's more than likely Anthony's lack of knowledge of the proper term. "Hone" would be a typo that wouldn't be caught by a spell checker. A grammar checker would catch it, though. While it's not required that one take every piece of advice that a grammar checker offers, it should certainly be used to spot basic typos, e.g. "out" rather than "our" or "hone" rather than "home." Grammar checking may not be convenient on the blogs, and it doesn't bother me if the occasional typo slips through there. But for articles, it has to be done, either by the writer or the proofreader (preferably both). If this stuff only occurred occasionally, it wouldn't be an issue. But it's continual, and it occurs way more often in Witrado's work than anyone else's.
  9. I'm just being preemptive here. Rather than turning this thread into a Macha referendum, let's stay on topic and concentrate on potential replacements. Any discussions of the pros and cons of replacing Ken can be posted elsewhere.
  10. for instance making the dog wait until you go through a door before allowing him to I think the more practical solution is to train the dog to wait for the human to say OK or something similar. That would cover different situations. When I had my dog, I frequently wanted him to go into the house while I was still diddling around outside. Making him wait until I went through the door just because it was the "thing to do" would have been inconvenient. As Backupcatchers says, different breeds are good and bad at different things. I guess Rottweilers are very good with "stay." A friend of mine told his Rottweiler to stay, forgot to release him, and left for the day. The dog was in exactly the same spot when he returned.
  11. The problem with fielding percentage is that too many people use it synonymously with the term "team defense." The stat is fine at measuring what it's supposed to measure, i.e. the percentage of balls that the defender handles properly out of the balls he actually reaches… according to the official scorer.
  12. Based on the fact that this thread has strayed so far off topic, I'm closing it. If someone wants to discuss Manny Parra's performance on the mound, feel free to comment in either a new or existing thread.
  13. When Telly gives URLs, he keeps saying "backslash" when he should be saying either "slash" or "forward slash."
  14. Does Dickerson play a better CF than Cain? I don't quite understand why Lo is playing RF. Macha said that he's already seen Cain play center. He wants to see what Dickerson can do.
  15. YES Network uses sound effects to make sure we "hear" pitched balls hit the catcher's mitt. There's a bit of a swoosh to go with this sound. And at times, the sound effect is played when the ball doesn't hit the mitt at all.
  16. Chris Dickerson -- Majors Chris Dickerson -- Minors
  17. It's out of order, but it's not shut down. I've contacted Brian.

  19. Thanks for the e-mail, hawing. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif It's now bugging me that I didn't think to jump over to a different browser to view this page. The photo would have shown up. I have its host blocked in Firefox because it slows down so many web sites.
  20. What's bugging me is that I can't see the poorly written sentence that hawing apparently posted. There's nothing after the colon. I have no clue why.
  21. I'm a fan of having more than one pitcher picking up saves, choosing relievers based on the game situation more than having their roles defined by which inning it is, and having guys pitch more than one inning when finishing games (when appropriate). That's how things were done before LaRussa and Eckersley redefined the end-of-game role. Based on my biases, it's easy for me to like Hoffman closing out some games.
  22. I would think that the team's less than stellar performance is certainly a big reason for this year's attendance drop. And as others have mentioned, many 2009 season ticket sales were tied to the purchase of 2008 postseason tickets; that advantage wasn't present this year. In 2009, attendance dropped pretty significantly industry-wide: 73,430,580 in 2009 vs. 78,624,315 in 2008. I think that part of the Brewers' 2010 decline is due to "catching up" with what happened in much of the industry last year. EDIT: Let's not turn this topic into another referendum on Doug Melvin.
  23. There are actually two chalets. I don't remember offhand where the other one is.
