  1. Now I'm intrigued. You're saying that if I get a modulator, I'll be able to watch separate DirecTV channels out of the same receiver on two TVs? And I can do that with a digital cable box, too?
  2. This is the thread we used to draft the current Major League Forum Resource FAQ. If you have questions about how to find information or can offer any links that should be included in the FAQ, please feel free to respond to this thread.
  3. When you do runs from cable boxes to more than one television, you're going to see the same channel on each TV, so there's nothing to steal. In the case of cable, the analog channels are available without a box, so you can still switch between those channels on each set by bypassing the box. The two downsides to DirecTV: ? No full-time FSN-WI ? Lack of local HD channels The upside is that nothing is analog; all channels have a good picture. A rule of thumb: all cables and satellite companies stink when it comes to explaining regional sports networks and blackouts.
  4. Otter, Animal House Kelly Bundy (Married? With Children) is correct for the Lost in Space quote. "It became very clear to me sitting out there today that every decision I've made in my entire life has been wrong. My life is the complete opposite of everything I want it to be. Every instinct I have, in every aspect of life, be it something to wear, something to eat - it's all been wrong."
  5. Dr. Evil, Austin Powers in Goldmember "It is better to have loved and lost than to have never watched Lost in Space at all."
  6. Jake Taylor, Major League "Don't forgive and never forget; Do unto others before they do unto you; and third and most importantly, keep your eye on your friends, because your enemies will take care of themselves."
  7. If nobody's inclined to start a thread, keep in mind that the 'Beautiful' thread is open for discussion and would seem to be an appropriate place for questions.
  8. Forum guidelines:
  9. After further review, I think this is a case where I should have linked to the old thread for reference, then locked the old thread. I'll go back and make those modifications. I've locked old threads in favor of new ones a couple times lately; I don't know why that didn't occur to me this time. Boy, though. I still think there's a more recent Fielder MVP thread in there somewhere. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  10. Here's the old thread: Would you like "Turning up the Heat" as a ringtone Since there appears to be a lot of good information in it, I'll bring it to the top of the forum and lock this thread. (updated link to Yuku --1992casey)
  11. Locking a duplicate isn't a punishment or anything like that. I don't think anyone here expects members to find thread that old. But if someone manages to locate the duplicate, we should funnel the discussion. In this case, the old thread popped up at the very top of a Google search. People certainly should look past the first page of the discussion list, though. I'd suggest looking back 3 or 4 days. And if a member absolutely knows a usable thread is hiding back there someplace, s/he should dig it out and use it.
  12. I believe Darryl Hamilton is the answer to the trivia question.
  13. Circumventing the word filter, even with random characters, is against site guidelines. Please don't.
  14. Ryan grounded into 10 double plays in his last 574 minor league ABs. That's 1.7% of his ABs.
  15. Because I've read recent sabermetric stuff de-emphasizing the importance of the #3 hitter, I'm fine with Braun in that spot. (The data suggest that #1, #2, #4, and #5 are more important.) Given that Ned had Fielder hitting #3 over a span of several weeks, though, I don't think he's basing his decision to put Braun there on the new sabermetrics. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  16. Geez, gordo? great job trying to hijack a thread. Is this discussion even necessary at all? Methinks not. By the way, thanks Patrick!
  17. That's a very good rule to follow, and the accusation analogy is right on. When I've tried to help keep the 'semi-political' threads open, I've tended to point out stuff like 'liberal agenda' or 'right-wing agenda' as terms to avoid. Assigning a politician's or party's name to a problem (Dumb Doyle plan, Bogus Bush plan, dopey Democrats, rummy Republicans) doesn't seem to help either.
  18. I'm assuming this has to do with the Off Topic thread that was locked for content this morning. Brian addressed that. As far as other locks? Duplicates are something that have to be resolved as quickly as possible. Otherwise, discussion becomes unwieldy. It's tough to decide which thread to lock if each one has a dozen posts in it. Also, note that we're trying to funnel as much duplicative discussion as possible into single threads. This would involve threads that don't start out as duplicates but end up that way. An example would be when a lineup thread was designated for general lineup discussion. A factor which may contribute to the number of locks is simply the number of threads. There was a time when 'current' discussion would extend only a page or two back on the forums. At this point, you've got to go to page 3 of the Major League forum to find posts from 3 days ago.
  19. I'm not sure if the comment is condescending or not. It registers low on my condescension meter, but the meter may be affected by today's barometric pressure. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I will say that the sentence probably would have been a better opener, supported with a couple facts. As a 'clincher', it could be taken a number of ways.
  20. Does the page show that he's logged in (where your page would says "Logged in as zingsheim")? It could be that his membership hasn't been approved yet.
  21. As long as Ryan isn't distributing autographed photos to the veteran players, I think we'll be fine.
  22. I neglected to mention that we now have a designated lineup thread. Let's keep any post featuring general lineup discussion over there.
  23. I agree, Scott. I like the five line idea as a guideline. Because the internet is a medium that's usually read on-screen, it's generally best to use short paragraphs. Ideal 'internet' paragraphs are likely to be shorter than the "well developed" paragraphs we were taught to write in school. Generally three to four sentences is plenty. If paragraphs contain compound or complex sentences, four sentences may even be too many. I find breaking up my posts to be pretty easy. I often break up my original paragraphing by simply looking for any excuse I can find to begin a new one. On the other hand, I tend to write long sentences. Addressing that is much harder than paragraphing. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif:" /> There were a couple of interesting comments in the ""What's Bugging You?" thread. DHonks stated: I agree, but I'm not sure where to suggest we go with this. Maybe "Official" designation should be given some kind of 'reserved' status? At any rate, I'm perfectly happy with the idea of members using the term less often. And rwa12 stated: rwa12 says it all. I don't think there's anything that needs to be added.
  24. Good topic. I remember a few posts before the season suggesting that Ryan may be a bit cocky. After watching him interview last week, I thought, "Geez, this guy is confident." (His "you know" rate is much lower than average.) There's probably a fine line, but I lean toward confident rather than cocky. In the interview, his voice and demeanor exuded confidence, but his words were humble enough. As far as watching home runs, if someone's new at this, who the heck wouldn't be tempted to view his accomplishment? The same thing happened with Prince a couple years ago. Let Ryan adjust to the excitement before citing this as a problem.
  25. I think it's a great topic. There just isn't much to say that makes the subject more interesting than it already is, though. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
