  1. I agree with this 100%...You cannot trade Hader unless you will be significantly better NOW with what you get, then what you would lose in Hader. Unless Stearns gets whatever he wants, you simply don't trade him. Period. For me, if I'm Stearns, I echo an earlier post. I demand Torres as at least one piece. Anything that doesn't include him, my answer is no, and would always be no. One thing that also needs to be considered..I know GM's have to make a lot of tough decisions, but in all honesty if you trade Hader, you HAVE to be ready to explain to the fans why you did, and if the package is underwhelming, you can expect a lot of blow back, and whether it's right or wrong, trading someone like Josh who has such a "cult" following, would have consequences from fans. That's just reality when you trade a popular player.
  2. Yeah, we got the joke. C'mon, you have to admit, it is a 100% spot on analogy. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
  3. Stearns just can't help himself on his way out of Walmart(where he does all of his FA shopping), he HAS to grab something off the clearance rack too.
  4. I missed the memo that free agents signed to 1-year deals are not free agent signings. Because we know they will do that. It's how they live. I mean in the last three years, they have signed what?? Count 'em..one multiple year deal (3 or more years) at an AAV of more than $10 mill a year...Lorenzo Cain. Heck, I could be wrong, but I think Garcia now becomes only the second FA they have signed to more than one year(excluding option years), at $10 mill or more per year. Stop and think about that once..they don't exactly use FA as a consistent roster building staple, do they??
  5. Nice try, but you guys would all be puffing out your chests saying you were "right" if they signed a FA to a ONE year deal at a higher AAV. I mean that's too easy, they did that last year. In fact, it seems like they like to live in "one year" deal world. I mean in the last three years, how many FA's have they signed to multiple years(3 or more years.. option years don't count)?? Cain, Thames and Lindblom now?? That's it?? In the last three years?? Ironically, 2 of them have come from the Korean league.
  6. That's some significant backpedaling. Are you also excluding deals signed on a day that ends in "-day"? It's not backpedaling at all...I said a FREE AGENT, and I know you would want to say a one year deal counts. It doesn't. Why should it?? That's a rent a player. So, i take it you aren't disagreeing with me then?? this is their "big" Free agent signing for the year??
  7. Doesn't matter...I said more than a one year deal. I don't care how they do it, or what goes into it. They will flat out not sign a free agent remaining for multiple years at a higher AAV then $10 million per year like they gave Avasail. Is anyone doubting that??
  8. How large, and how do we get in on this? Also, you can't bet on credit. We definitely need to see the cash upfront. Remember, I specifically said FREE AGENT signing, and this does also NOT include a one year deal. It means a 2 year or more contract at a higher AAV for EVERY year of said deal. That does NOT include acquiring a contract via trade. There's a distinct difference. If they hadn't signed anyone for anywhere close to $10 mill a year until Avasail, who will they sign that's left, they would give more to. I had to put these qualifiers in, because I know how people work. They'd acquire a contract via trade that's more or sign someone to a stupid one year deal(I hate those) for more and try to say that counts. It doesn't.
  9. They announced this is the last signing they will make this offseason? No, but I'm willing to bet a VERY large sum of money this is their "big" FA signing for the year, in terms of AAV.
  10. This. Garcia appeared to be part of Stearns’ plan from early on. Think the market was hotter - both overall and for Garcia - than anticipated. But he was plan A and I don’t think Stearns was going to be denied here. No it’s not Cole/Rendon/Strasburg money, but for those bemoaning how cheap Mark A is this offseason, here is an example of the Brewers loosening the pursestrings to get their guy. Hold on a minute, "loosening" the purse strings for a player they signed for $10 per year?? That's not close to "loosening" the purse strings. It still likely means they will be a decent amount below total payroll of what they were last year.
  11. I would argue that they did get someone like Dallas when they signed Brett Anderson. Both left handed, both are 31. Looking at last year, era is similar (Kuechel slightly lower), whip is similar (Anderson is slightly lower). For those who look at won loss record (I generally don't) Anderson had a 59% w/l record (13-9), Kuechel 50% (8-8). Are you saying you would like a second pitcher like Anderson. Not that I don't want Kuechel, but it isn't like he is an ace. I personally wouldn’t mind having a second ground-ball starting pitcher in the rotation. I believe limiting the long balls while playing in a hitter‘s park will help them win more games next season. My ideal rotation would be at least 2-3 of them with very good to elite K rates, then the other two can be fillers/ground ball pitchers. I have no data to back this up, but it sure seems to me, the best rotations have at least two elite strikeout pitchers. There is nothing more important IMO then missing bats when it comes to pitchers. Obviously that doesn't mean other types of Pitchers can't/won't be successful, plenty of them have been. But to me, you give yourself a greater chance of being successful the more high K rate pitchers you have.
  12. The trade market for corner infielders could include (among others)... Josh Bell Carlos Santana Trey Mancini Justin Turner Kyle Seager Yuli Gurriel Miguel Sano Hunter Dozier Giovanny Urshela J.D. Davis Dom Smith Kris Bryant (yes, I know he isn’t going to the Brewers) I would love Gurriel and Mancini. It almost does seem like they will have to go the trade route doesn't it?? Just nothing left in FA that really "pops" off the page.
  13. +100000000 this thread can be closed down now, along with any other thread. You know why so many feel that way?? Because they get those players on a "good deal". That's all that matters to them. Even if the #'s for that player(after they acquire them) are crap...it's "well at least it didn't cost them much". It's all about the $$ and the value to most. Production be damned! I’ll give the two of you credit, you’ve motivated me to root for the Brett Anderson’s of the world beyond what I ever thought was possible. BCin07, the thing I think you’re missing (aside from an understanding of how to use the quote feature) is the off-season should be judged in its totality versus a reactionary meltdown about finances for every move the Brewers do or don’t make. If we get to the end of the off-season and the Brewers have a sub-$100 million payroll and they have only added role players, then by all means lets have a discussion about how disappointed we are at the outcome and the direction of the team during Yelich’s remaining three seasons. To date the Brewers under Stearns have been more aggressive on the trade market than they have been in free agency. They still have a couple of months to make meaningful trades before the season starts. Stearns even indicated as recent as five days ago that they have had many trade discussions (and believe they have many options). Lets see where those discussions lead before we declare it a failed off-season, a stingy owner, and a front office that isn’t motivated to build a championship contender. If Avisail Garcia is the biggest remaining addition on this roster during the off-season then we will both be frustrated come March. Until then lets access the various remaining possibilities and hope that additional moves are coming that will make more sense of the frugal free agent signings to date, and that will help fill out an NL Central contending roster for 2020. You're right, and yes...how do you use the quote feature?? It bothers me to no end that you can't quote more than 3 in one post. How do you get around that?? believe me, I'd love to know.
  14. Who hasn't heard of Avasail Garcia...certainly everyone that posts here has.
  15. So if they do end up signing Garcia, who would everyone target for the openings at 1st and 3rd??
  16. I just feel like if the Brewers are ever going to have a top of the league rotation consistently, at some point they are going to have to spend big money to get an established front line starter. They haven't proven to this point they can grow them consistently in the minor leagues, if they had I wouldn't care if they ever spent money in FA on pitching. I also don't feel like they will ever have the prospects required to obtain a TOR pitcher. For a half a season or so?? Sure, they could likely do that, but I just want some consistent, pretty dominant pitching. I mean who as a Brewers fan wouldn't want to have a rotation like the Nats, or the Astros, or the Dodgers have most years??
  17. Nobody has said anything about this deal being regrettable. you're arguing with yourself to make a point. You've been asked by multiple mods to stop bringing this payroll argument to every thread you post in. Just in the last 2 hours you've derailed the Garcia thread, tried to derail the Kluber thread, and brought it here unabated. If you want to talk about the payroll, there are threads about payroll. Stop derailing every thread with this payroll rant. Not sure how this was anything about the Brewers payroll...but it's clear you don't like me for some reason. That's cool though man.
  18. Heyman thinks the deal is quite reasonable...can't say i disagree in comparison.. Jon Heyman @JonHeyman · 9m Bumgarner 85M deal seems quite reasonable, especially considering his incredible October record, and especially in this market with Wheeler getting 33M more. 1st on MB: @JeffPassan 1st with 15M deferred: @Ken_Rosenthal
  19. Guys...please...as much as people hate me posting in every thread about the Brewers payroll etc. It gets just as annoying seeing people post how much these big money deals are going to be regrettable. None of us know that. Just because a player might be older, and gets a lot of money doesn't mean the contract will be regrettable. If Bumgarner wins a cy young in those 5 years and the Dbacks win a world series, will they rgret it?? I highly doubt it, even if his last 3 years are terrible. I wouldn't as a Brewers fan, I know that much. I honestly think some of it is envy in that the Brewers will never make these kinds of signings so everyone hopes they turn out bad for the team that does sign them, so they can feel better about the Brewers NOT signing someone like this. I tend to look at these things with no regard to the $$, because i honestly feel you have to. Think about it, who is MORE likely(of course no guarantees) to be a better pitcher over the next three years..Madison Bumgarner, Gerritt Cole and Stephen Strasburg, or Brett Anderson, Josh Lindblom and Matt Lauer?? Who's numbers would benefit the Brewers more in all likelihood?? That's how I look at these things.
  20. 85 million...$15 million deferred.
  21. But then doesn't that say that maybe they were wrong on how they projected them?? That's what I mean, they have almost no margin for error if/when they are wrong on someone. Also, I'm not sure you should be "applauding" them making the playoffs, you sir were the absolute most vocal one on these boards that they should be selling. I hope you will agree how wrong that decision would have been, right?? You NEVER EVER sell and always add unless you are so far out of it it's obvious you need to sell.
