  1. Funny that there seems to be somewhat conflicting versions of reality between the Covey and the Brewers: To say the least, Covey was surprised to be picked by the Brewers. "I don't even think I know how to spell Milwaukee," said Covey, who added that he hadn't talked to many representatives of the Brewers of late. "I wasn't really expecting the Brewers." http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/95825834.html “We know Dylan real well. We weren't sure that he would get to us but he did. “This gave us the opportunity to take somebody we really wanted. Dylan is a fantastic young man. Our scouts Dan Huston and Corey Rodriguez were heavily involved in this situation, got to know him real well, got to know the family real well.” http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/95831059.html
  2. This is entirely correct. What an incredible "who cares" moment. I support his release, but are the Brewers any better than they were when I woke up this morning? No. For those that were insistent that management's desire to keep Suppan on the roster, was keeping other players off, or making the team worse, I give you Chris Smith. They finally released Suppan, but he has not been replaced by a player that was being blocked, or was going to make the team better. Why? Because that player didn't exist. Suppan's presence on the roster yesterday had about as much impact on the team, as his absence does today. Agree, but wouldn't you assume Chris Smith is just here for a couple days until Riske replaces him? Probably the timing is just to to avoid any chance of Suppan in the mound at MP, given the fans reaction last time that happened.
  3. 6.05(k) In running the last half of the distance from home base to first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, he runs outside (to the right of) the three-foot line, or inside (to the left of) the foul line, and in the umpire’s judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base... http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2008/official_rules/06_the_batter.pdf
  4. With the major league minimum at $400,000 per year, I don't think any of them are "underpaid" for putting up with the burden of making a living by playing baseball.
  5. I don't want wrong calls, but I even more do not want replay taking away from the normal flow of the game. It really does not add to the game to have everything stop and the umpires leave the field to look at a TV screen to verify if a home run occurred or not. I do not want to see more of this. I'm not against using technology but it would have to be done in a way that does not work the way replay does in the sports that use it. The officials on the field or ice call a touchdown or a goal scored, but the fans at the game don't really know if the scoring actually occurred until after somebody studies 10 different views on a screen and then an anti-climatic announcement is made.
  6. Also the way Jim Joyce and Galarraga handled this was a great lesson for everyone and far more meaningful than a line in a record book. http://i.usatoday.net/communitymanager/_photos/daily-pitch/2010/06/03/joycearmandoshakex-wide-community.jpg
  7. One difference is Parra supposedly has the potential to be something, so makes sense to give him as many chances as possible since the team is going nowhere this year. Suppan and Bush will not, I assume, be back...so who cares. Plus aren't we going to need to trade a left-handed starter or two, they surely are not going to go with Wolf, Parra, Narveson, Capuano, (or Davis), and Gallardo next year are they? So maybe "showcasing" these lefthanders could also be related to that.
  8. "48 more no-hit games were also erased by the re-definition of the rules." Wow, that's a lot of no hitters that got changed, what were the "rules" before this commission? Oh, this helps: http://skallas.wordpress.com/2008/07/01/fix-the-no-hitter-rule-now/
  9. I don't think it would just be the money, if it is correctable then he might be walking away from the opportunity to be traded to a contender next month. The best scenario would be he figures it out and gets traded to, say, SD and ends his career in a pennant race there.
  10. What does the number 2 in the "options" column for Hoffman mean here:http://www.brewerfan.net/ViewFortyManRoster.do?teamId=1
  11. ???http://www.msnhiddenemoticons.com/Library/extra_large/plain_yellow/default/confused.gif
  12. So...will Melvin sign Griffey in 2011 or 2012?
  13. Joyce also showed a lot of restraint in not throwing anybody out. He took a lot of abuse, while thinking that he had made the right call. Assuming he does not have a history of blowing calls, more umpires should be like Jim Joyce. Galarraga has got to be one of the most relaxed, even-tempered players ever, not only did he just smile after getting robbed, when the perfect game was kept intact by that over-the-shoulder catch in CF, he also just reacted with a little smile.
  14. [quote name=Roderick wrote: I would think differently if Hoffman had gotten more of those lifetime saves with the Brewers, but to me he is just a hired gun.[/b]http://www.theodoresworld.net/pics/0608/backwardgImage1.jpg
  15. If that is where Hoffman is, it would seem that they'd be better off releasing him than Suppan, since Suppan can pitch multiple innings. OTOH, the fans don't seem to hate Hoffman (yet).
  16. So, when do we start blaming Peterson for a lot of this mess?Maybe in a couple more months? Melvin was asked how much of this should fall on new pitching coach Rick Peterson, who came in with high expectations of improving the staff. "It's been two months," said Melvin. "You can't change coaches every two months. I think we're all puzzled by this. I think the pitchers who aren't performing are puzzled." http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/95361664.html
  17. You left out Loe and Parra.
  18. So if he needs, say, 10 opportunities to get his 4 saves, when does he need to go back to being the closer, or maybe just the three-run lead closer specialist, in order to be fairly certain he will be able to limp to this glorious achievement?
  19. I think Melvin's comment kind of implied that: "Melvin said Manny Parra could get more starts at some point.http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/95288364.html
  20. They also won't have Bill Hall or Risky on the books, this year the team is spending about $25 million for basically nothing.
  21. Since they had to make a decision on him by Saturday, maybe they want to try to see what they have while Davis is still out?
  22. Maybe they need to go with about 7 starters until some of them demonstrate the ability to go at least 6-7 innings regularly? How about if you go at least 6, you get another start on the normal 5th day, otherwise you go to the pen after a couple days off and get another start when there is an opening due to someone else's failure to go at least 6. If all 7 fail, then Suppan gets a start. http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/3.gif
  23. He is not stealing anything. The team and he agreed to a contract. If Suppan had pitched much better than was expected at the time of the signing would the team be morally obligated to pay him more money, in your view? Is the team "stealing" from Ryan Braun? Because in his case the terms of the contract seem to be working out to give the team more than they paid for.
  24. Right now is our 13th best pitcher a better option than Suppan? I would guess not, so it makes no sense to get rid of him. If he were making $400,000 per year, I think few would care as much as the do.
