  1. I don't think the franchise value is the issue, it is the revenue available to the team that matters for competitive balance. But the story is the same with revenue, there is the Yankees and then there is everyone else. The revenue difference between the Yankees and the, #2 in revenue, Mets, is $173 million, while the difference between the mets and the Marlins, at the bottom in revenue, is "only" $124 million. http://www.forbes.com/lists/2010/33/baseball-valuations-10_The-Business-Of-Baseball_Revenue.html Some teams like the, #1 in profits, Marlins, probably do deserve some criticism for just pocketing their revenue sharing money, though. BTW, it looks like Mark A. could pocket a nice profit, with the team he purchased in 2005 for $223 million now being worth $351 million.
  2. There is a huge difference between the Yankees and even the other wealthy teams. The Yankees have $441 million in revenue, in second place is the Mets with $268 million. The league average is $197 million (or $188 million for all teams that are not the Yankees). So while some teams have 30% above average revenue, the Yankees are in a class by themselves with 2.35 times the revenue average of other teams. http://web.yesnetwork.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100407&content_id=9124176&vkey=1&oid=
  3. Exactly...except I'd leave out the "if". Since at the time the contract was signed the future was unknown, I'd say he did not leave anything on the table no matter what happens. He chose a risk-free guarantee of $45,000,000 or so, rather than the possibility of much more, but some risk of much less. As someone else indicated, the only thing that I don't understand is why guys like Braun don't demand more money in the early years. If it were me, I think I'd want the pay to be more equal in each year of the contract. Why not, say, something like $2-3 million escalating to $6 million rather than a few hundred thousand escalating to $12 million?
  4. Yep http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2009/0714/pg2_a_seligumps_576.jpg
  5. If they sign Prince long term at $20+ million, that may become the next contract weighing them down. Prince is a great hitter, but I still have a hard time seeing him being worth 1/4 of the entire payroll.
  6. If the team was "born" in April 1970, then opening day 1971 was their first birthday and opening day 2010 is their 40th birthday (or anniversary). If 1970 was the first season, 1971 was their second,...then 2010 is their 41st.
  7. The problem is they still have to pay them after they let them go.
  8. Agree...not everyone is going to come up and basically be handed a position like Hardy and Weeks were. Some are going to come up and be treated more like Hart. Some here said the same sorts of things about him...Yost does not like him, etc...
  9. Fine, but with runners on base, putting the ball in play instead of striking out, can also lead to a double play. Once this year putting the ball in play even led to the Brewers turning a triple play.
  10. Well then, they've got that going for them, which is nice. Looks like Pittsburgh in July will be our road trip this year.
  11. It seems to me that LaRussa is much quicker to change pitchers that Yost was. I've thought that Macha makes changes quicker and is also much more willing to make a change in the middle of an inning than Yost ever was...in those ways, I'd say I see Macha as more Larussian than Yost was. Yost was very much into defined roles (or innings, actually) for pitchers. I don't pay enough attention to other teams to know if LaRussa does that or not, but I am inclined to guess that he does not.
  12. IOW, if you enjoy torture, you can get it for cheap. If you have the time to wade through it craigslist is probably a better deal, as there are no fees added on. I've not looked in a while, since I've had no interest in going to the ballpark in the last couple of months.
  13. That's good because they are bad at baserunning, for the most part. It looks like, aside from the Cubs, they are the worst in the league in SB success rate.
  14. Bye Ken. What do you expect the manager to say..."he sucks and I hope he is not here next year, there is no way the Brewers should pay this guy $6 million next year"
  15. They have an advantage in not having time zone issues. Most of Europe (from Poland to Spain) is in a single time zone.
  16. So the team becomes nothing more than a sideshow if they celebrate in a manner you don't approve of? Why does it have to involve a player. The point is some of the entertainment value for a lot of "fans" has to do with things other than hitting, fielding, and pitching. Even with a better team there are still a lot of folks who I've seen coming in late and leaving early last year and earlier this year, not seeming to care if they miss quite a bit of the actual baseball game. Many still head for the exits after the sausage race, the seventh inning stretch, and the end of beer sales. "I would go one step further and say you can make it free and nobody would show up." I'm pretty sure you are wrong about that...make anything free in Milwaukee and you are sure to get a big crowd. Plus it might even be more profitable to let folks in for free and just have the side shows going, as you would not have to pay $80,000,000 (plus whatever the cost of benefits adds) to the players.
  17. "The object is to entertain by pitching and hitting the ball, running the bases and fielding." Really? Someone had better inform the sausages. What about all the other "entertainment" that goes on at miller park: the rubber chicken contest the kiss cam follow the ball contest guess the attendance pathetic attempts at orchestrated cheer leading (ie. "charge" and "make some noise") and please tell fans to stop doing the wave all the amusement park-like crap on the concourses etc. This was far less "corny" than all the above. They are out of everything and have stunk for the last 2.5 months, at least this gave some of us a little laugh at the end of that game.
  18. I don't buy that the temperature is an issue at all. Why would that not be just as much a factor for KC and Texas? It also is clearly not payroll, their payroll was not significantly different from the Brewers, only about 10% higher to start the season and both teams are in the middle of the pack. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/salaries I don't pretend to know the reason, but they are definitely the opposite of the Cubs who have one of the highest payrolls but continue to suck. Folks here do not want to give LaRussa credit and maybe they are right about that. But I know if I were given a choice of hiring LaRussa or Pinella, I'd take LaRussa. However, I think far more amazing than the Cardinals is the amount of success the Florida Marlins have been able to achieve.
  19. I don't want a guy making the 3rd out attempting to steal with the pitcher up, that would mean having the pitcher lead off the next inning. OTOH, if it would only be the 1st or 2nd out, then the pitcher would usually be bunting, so why steal?
  20. Gallardo confusing Cain's face with Kendall's glove, apparently...must be the shadows http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  21. Cameron is not helping a lot out there tonight. The only hit was one he should have had and now an error to allow the only run.
  22. They were so bad the pitching coach was fired in his first year. This seems not to have improved things, so next I'd think they'd have try firing either the catcher or the pitching staff.
  23. They may want Hardy to play in the hopes that he performs and enhances his trade value. To improve his odds of showcasing his offensive skills, I'd say bat him #2.
