  1. As a UNC alumna, it was my duty to try to introduce my friend to the rivalry tonight. Mostly people are the bar were just confused. I think we'll get them at Cameron with Ty Lawson back. Kind of hard to win without actual point guards.
  2. This is not a place I would expect my hometown to be mentioned. Heh. I moved away from North Carolina about a year and a half ago, but to a place where I had some relatives an hour away and where I knew a couple people. Within a few weeks of moving and on my first day at work, my little brother went to the hospital with a terrible case of appendicitis and was lucky to have lived. It was a hard thing to deal with and having a few friends in my neighborhood already made it so much easier. I was 21 and just out of school when I moved, so having never lived more than 30 minutes away from my family, my perspective may be kind of different. I'm really glad I moved, but I don't know if I could have gone to a place where I knew no one. Now maybe, but not then. I don't mean to discourage you at all, just sharing my experience. If you do move, one way to meet people would be through volunteering. There are Hands On networks all around the country, and it's something you don't have to commit a specified amount of time to -- just whenever you can.
  3. Camden Yards is one of the best roadtrip stadiums, in my pretty limited experience. The food is great (Boog's!), there were some nice hole-in-the-wall bars nearby and ESPN Zone if that's not your thing, and the Baltimore Sports History Museum and Babe Ruth Museum were right across the street and a lot of fun. My friends and I drove down for a weekend series against the Yankees, so the park was rather overrun with fans of the opposing team, but the O's fans we did meet were friendly and knowledgeable and just a lot of fun. There's not a bad seat in the house there, either. Turner Field was not nearly as much fun. Hopefully I can add Miller Park to my list this summer.
  4. I live really close to the park and I think there are a few other Boston locals on the board. I'd be happy to plan a meet up at a nearby bar for some postgame beers and (hopefully) celebrating. The bars in the immediate vicinity may be too packed right after the game for 20+ people to all get in together, but we can definitely figure something out. As for rough treatment, it really depends on where you sit -- cheaper seats in my experience have been rowdier. But, like most places, not being obnoxious about it and in someone's face and knowing your stuff tend to alleviate most rough treatment.
  5. You're in the next to the last row, I believe, but they aren't bad seats. In all honesty, the view isn't that different from the 10 times more expensive Green Monster, just without the coolness of being on the Monster. I actually prefer the upper bleachers due to the price and the fact that the people who are up there tend to be a lot more fun than the people in the loge seats.
  6. People who don't move the slider things back to the 0 positions on the scale at the gym. I will concede that being bugged by this is probably a girl thing. I will also concede that I am having the kind of week where I am choosing to be irritated by the small things rather than deal with the big ones.
  7. One thing to be considered regarding transfer of production is the difference in number of games played and travel involved. I just read an interesting interview with Hideki Okajima where he talked about just praying he wouldn't get called up to pitch near the end of the season because he was so tired and how flying for so long to the west coast made him dizzy and gave him headaches. There also more off days in the Japanese schedule. So for the first year at least, it would be probably like transitioning from the shorter season in AAA to the majors, where you would probably start seeing a dropoff in August or September.
  8. It was the last Saturday in January last year.
  9. They did this last year as well. Basically, they put a few games that are less marquee and for when it is going to cold as heck on sale earlier in the winter, I guess to drum up interest. The remaining home games (except for the Yankee series) will go on sale in late January. They do not sell Yankee tickets or Green Monster seast online the way they do the rest of the tickets. For that, you have to enter a lottery to have the opportunity to buy. We should organize some sort of pre- or postgame gathering for those coming to Boston for the Brewers series!
  10. what really bugs me a lot here in north carolina is that at a stoplight, everyone stops short a good 10 feet from the car in front and won't move up to the bumper. like today i missed a long light because i couldn't get into the left turn lane only because people wouldn't move ahead. it hugely bugs me. I do not miss North Carolina driving one bit. What is bugging me right now is the shirt my brother wants for Christmas is $10. The shipping is $7.
  11. Heh. None taken! I am so nervous, I can't even sit still. These double plays are brutal. How in the world do you double off Ellsbury and Lugo???
  12. The Red Sox. And a dude. And also, I'll see your loud eaters and raise you compulsive throat clearers. We recently moved spaces in my department and I am now seated next to the loudest man ever who can't go two minutes without clearing his throat. There's always a gross or grating noise coming from over there but that one is the worst.
  13. The main message I am getting from that article is that my cost of living is really, really high. $5 beer sounds about right... Coffee is my real weakness. Not the floofy Starbucks kind with all the fat and sugar and grossness, but $10 a week for Dunkin's cinnamon iced, black is worth it for me. And my gym membership... I don't even want to do the math on how much that costs a year. I use it though, because I tell myself how many dollars per day I'm wasting if I don't.
  14. Do you know where you are staying? Boston Beerworks is a great place to watch a game. The food is good and they brew their own beers. There's a location by Fenway and one by the Garden. The aquarium is really cool, but it's also $20 a pop. The Boston Public Library often has really cool exhibits that are free. For canolis, I would recommend Dino's over Mike's unless you want the cool Mike's pastry box. Skip the injectable cupcake place in the North End, though. Boston College will be playing a home football game that weekend, I think. I'll keep thinking. I live here, so if I can be of any help, let me know!
  15. I got traded this weekend. The least they could have done was bench me the game before. I'd heard the rumors, but I thought I was off the block this late in the season.
  16. I saw him throw 5 innings of a no hitter in Portland at the end of June and he got pulled due to pitch count. Guess it wasn't a fluke! If you catch the highlights, look out for the absolutely sick play Pedroia made to save it.
  17. The Brewers are technically my "other" team, but they've totally got me, as my baseball outlook has been warped -- when the Yankees pulled within 4 and the panic started permeating the streets of Boston, all I could think of was how awesome a four game lead would be in the NL Central. If there were no Brewers, in addition to the Sox, it'd be the Braves -- my other other team. (I also had a super awesome Chipper Jones rookie card.)
  18. I'm really glad to see Miller catching today. This may be a dumb idea, but I was wondering, given the depth of Cappy's struggles, if it would be worth experimenting with a change of scenery behind the plate (though I guess Miller is already claimed).
  19. I will always cheer for: 1. John Smoltz 2. Chipper Jones 3. Craig Biggio 4. Orlando Cabrera 5. Tom Glavine 6. Greg Maddux 7. Pedro Martinez 8. Kevin Millar 9. Mark Bellhorn 10. Trot Nixon 11. Dave Roberts Honorable mention to Josh Hamilton -- I'm from NC and this year has been what so many people have been waiting for. My little brother caught some BP for him last year and he was very nice to him.
  20. 1. Alex Rodriguez 2. David Eckstein 3. Jason Giambi 4. Albert Pujols 5. Barry Bonds Honorable mentions to JD Drew, Scott Kazmir, Scott Rolen, AJ Pierzynski, and Ted Lilly. The "I'm Grateful for 2004 But Seriously, Stop Talking for Five Minutes" Award goes to Curt Schilling.
