  1. I too have found my wife hates it, but I like it. I think the premise of the show may have a limited run though. Still I rarely watch comedies and this one is as good and creative as Chuck was. Possibly one of the best pilots ever.
  2. His central misunderstanding is that speed is supposed to help raise the batting average, more infield hits, bunting for base hits and such.
  3. I guess I don't see the actual going for broke part of that scenario. If you add Haren, it certainly costs you some prospects, but your payroll is probably about the same as this year. There is a lot of salary moving off the books Hoffman would basically cover arby raises to Prince and Hart, Suppan covers Haren, Riske, Bush, and Hall more than cover the rest of the arby pool.
  4. I'd definitely favor someone from a contending team, with it this close, and already having had 2 phenom stories into the mix it's going to be someone who is perceived to really help his team get into the playoffs, unless Strasburg goes Cal Eldred on the league down the stretch.
  5. AAA is currently a little light on the prospects, so why not try and flip Edmonds, Hoffman, Riske, and maybe even Counsell for something? Even a guy like Katin who might not have a great shot has some value of providing potential depth so grab something. On the other hand while most of those guys are pretty cheap Hoffman might be more valuable just be dealt for salary relief if possible.
  6. In no particular order, but I pulled some guys of John Sickels top 20 for the Sox that look interesting to me as other guys besides Hudson in a trade. 10) Santos Rodriguez, LHP, Grade C+: Gotta love the strikeouts, but a long way from being ready to help. High ceiling though. 7) David Holmberg, LHP, Grade C+: Will the fastball get faster? If it does his stock could go up quickly. 4) Brent Morel, 3B, Grade B-: I think he's underrated. Only questions about power at higher levels keep him from a Grade B. Now blocked behind Mark Teahen, a long-term signing I don't understand. 2) Jared Mitchell, OF, Grade B: Grade A tools, refinement is a Grade C/C+ right now. 12) Jhonny Nunez, RHP, Grade C+: Power relief arm could help sometime soon.
  7. Part of the reason I like Hart to first is that he used to atleast have the tools to be an above average defender at 1st. Braun has tools, but they never seem to help him on the diamond, so I don't know if moving him laterally does anything other than move his supbar defense from one spot to another. In principle we could at least upgrade the LF defense, but why settle only for improving at 1 position?
  8. I think you have to seriosuly look at trading Casey as a retooling strategy precisely because he is young and cheap. A lot of teams place extra value on that, but we have a couple of options to get potentially similar production in a resurgent Green and Gamel. At the same time I will point out he's giving solid offensive production, but has very limited range and that's an area for improvement. Maybe there's not the value out there, but I bet there is since he slots easily into any budget and you have control.
  9. Are Gennet and Dykstra an argument for Lawrie at 3rd? I still think Gamel can come around, but he needs a John Olerud type target at first in my opinion to help him overcome the throwing issue enough to let his range become the bigger story. I'm just not optimistic that will happen.
  10. Related to that fear, I think the team as currently constructed is very much in a hard place to improve to a consistent 90-win team without major changes. There is essentially no significant hope for an improvement in team defense outside of Escobar, and maybe Weeks remembering what he did correctly last year. That's not enough unless: LuCroy develops into a mid .800 OPS catcher and either Gomez or Cain seize the CF job with .800 OPS production, and Escobar improves into the mid .700's. At that point your talking about a 900+ run offense and you just slug your way in. The problem is that the defense is making starting pitching improvement impossible beyond clear #1 and #2 guys. Basically anybody without great strikeout stuff is going to get hit enough that they look like 4 or 5 starters at best. I don't think there is a clear way for us to find enough of those really good pitchers to overcome the defense, and that scenario for the offense is just too tenous. So yes I believe that the team is reasonably close in terms of expected wins to being competitive, but it needs a lot of work to be more than a 50/50 bet each year to have a playoff shot and not trying to retool now makes it less like that will happen. Put another way there is a practical limit to the number of offseason changes that can happen, and I'd say this team needs about 6 total trades/ positions switches/ signings to have a better talent configuration.
  11. Would you be strategic and go after Glaus hoping to increase Fielder's value? In the end though I'd advocate just letting it go as I don't see how it has done anything other than help us to just take the base.
  12. I think we all know that "a legitimate offer" in Melvin speak = the offer he will accept and finish the trade. We've seen that dodge far too often right before a trade is finally consummated to believe that it has substantial meaning. Based on their current roster, and the desire for experience I think a package of Fielder and Bush makes a lot of sense. You get a veteran in that 5th starter spot this late in the season (GMs invariably seem to like that) and a massive upgrade in DH offense. They get better for next year as well, and these players definitely help them make a push for the World series this year. Detroit looks like they could use a similar package, though upgrading at DH from Damon isn't quite as dramatic. I'd guess we'd probably take Damon back to even out the salaries for this year. The Angels could also use a real 1st/DH as well, though they seem to have been curiously quite in all these discussions despite being competitive and in need of more offense.
  13. How about this for a Cutter comment: doing everything we kept waiting for Josh Murrary and Brent Brewer to do. I agreed with the comments on relief prospects. Hopefully this year really emboldens Melvin to de-emphasize veteran relievers, which will free up a lot of money for elsewhere on the diamond. I think there is still pretty good depth to the list, but I doubt if the Brewers will find themselves with a top 5 system anytime soon again. I think that is OK because if you look at the current top 10 it's filled with guys who have been called up. The biggest reason I don't see us climbing so high again is that we seem to be in a mode to continue calling up a few of the best guys every year, instead of waiting on a bumper crop to all come up at once. I see no problem with that, and the Twins and Braves have been doing it that way generally for quite awhile.
  14. One relevant question is how long is the promotion for? If they are only intending it until Gallardo comes back then, it's not completely without reason to view his promotion as a short term get introduced scenario. I agree if the intent is to keep him up or see what he can do then he needs to be given an extended and consistent look, probably with another bench bat being brought up and Gomez sent down to try and resurrect himself.
  15. Bush might actually be cheaper to sign next year as a FA if he was traded than to retain. It's all part of the wonky affects of arbitration that guys who are just good enough can often do better that last year or so of arby or if the team tries to hold onto them than on the actual open market. Either on his own or as an add on to make another deal work he has a decent amount of trade value particularly to a team that lost a starter to injury.
  16. Based on past history Cain probably doesn't start tonight ( I can't think the last time they started a position player call-up on the day they were activated), but hopefully in the next day or two he gets a start and will start (generally) as long as he hits and plays acceptable defense. In other words he has a chance to be a starter, but he can't afford to struggle otherwise it all gets unpredictable as to who will start.
  17. What about the Angels? They could use a bat or two at first, DH, or third base. Maybe the Rangers deal puts more pressure on them to do a big trade. The Dodgers also could use some help at first or 3rd
  18. I think he's in a bad spot, but he's had only one really crummy year. If I had a low talent rebuilding kind of team he's the kind of player I'd pick up in a heart beat if he was released. It's not like he fell apart his first time in A ball. Even Dykstra to my surprise has really shown how one can bounce back from a completely off year due to issues.
  19. I have suggested elsewhere moving Hart back to first base, as his height gives him a big edge at helping coral wild throws, which is a common weakness of the other infielders, if you make Gamel your third basemen. The biggest problem with that is that you'd still need to identify a way to improve RF, and Gamel while not hitting poorly also isn't forcing his way up. It's also unclear how long it would take Corey to get used to playing 1st again or what his range would be (though presumably better than Fielders)
  20. If Cain were brought up Gomez would have to be sent down, or otherwise he would almost certainly rot on the bench. The way Macha handles ABs there just isn't a lot of room for another person out there. I do think there is a reasonable argument to be made for giving him some more AAA.
  21. The problem this team truly faces in some sense is that of the difficulty of going from a .500 team to a contender is much harder than going from scrub to .500. The obvious improvements are the hardest to do (top of rotation starters). Most other improvements would be much smaller, and or represent trade-offs often offense for defense. In large part the pitching difficulty this year has been exagerated by the poor defense at multiple positions. The infield defense generously has 1 average defender currently (Escobar) and the rest below average. The OF defense when Gomez isn't playing is below average across the board. This more than anything has created the impression of the rotation being in such a tattered state. If you have a bunch of back of the rotation guys behind possibly the worst defense in the NL, it's not going to look to good. I don't necessarily advocate going crazy and trading off our bats for gloves, but any successful strategy for improvement needs to somehow generate defensive improvement at multiple positions. On the pitching side I'm a little less optimistic than LouisEly. It's a solid crop that I feel confident can supplement the rotation and reliably fill out the bullpen without us having to continually shell out 15- 20 million a year, but barring some luck I don't see there being quite enough to get us more than middle of the road.
  22. I'm still kind of intrigued by the idea of keeping Hart and moving him back to first to replace a traded Fielder. You could be looking at a big upgrade for next year defensively at a couple of spots on the diamond, which might go even farther to improve the pitching then whoever you get for Fielder.
  23. How about to the Angels to replace Brandon Wood? They could use some offense for sure.
  24. If I might make the following suggestion, target Fielder and McGehee for trades then bring in Gamel and his improved range at third and shift Hart to his original position at first. Hart's reach helps to mitigate 2 of the biggest weaknesses currently from Escobar and Gamel. Between Cain and Lawrie a little bit longer term we've got better defensive OF options, and I assume that Escobar will solidify after some time up.
