  1. Is there a possible BCS angle from the TV stations to getting Utah and/or Boise St. into a major conference to qwell there budding insurrection of the status quo?
  2. I also am kind of intrigued by playing Hart at first. Gamel has more upside at third defensively than Casey, but those errors could make it difficult to ever flash the range. Gamel in RF though seemingly wouldn't have to do much to be neutral defensively.
  3. I'll jump in and point out that some people's running gait never looks like hustling/ running harder doesn't help them increase speed.
  4. Call me crazy. but in that scenario described it sure seems like the PAC-10 gets kind left hanging. Oklahoma St. and Colorado isn't exactly an impressive haul by themselves. The SEC doesn't really need much and landing Oklahoma is a pretty big coup. I'm kind of surprised that the Oklahoma's and Texas' would split up that much, as they seemed to have some pretty deep rivalries. Still I like adding Texas academically and athletically. That would put us at 14 with room to add 2 more schools, and all kinds of room to be choosy.
  5. I think it's about 10 years too late for Deck McGuire to be a useful thing http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  6. Is Bronswell Patrick available for a start?
  7. Even though he flamed out you'd have to give Prior the title as best of the bunch since he atleast did something.
  8. Given that it is Gennet's first full year or pro ball and he is still plenty young, I kind of expect the team to let him keep raking. Brevard is so hard on the hitters they could be concerned about trashing his confidence if they promote him too quick. Let him slump for the first time at an easier level.
  9. Just thought I give a note that Gindl's strikeout pace after 100 ABs is half of what it was last year. His walk rate and power have stayed right there too, so that argues well for his ability to keeping making adjustments.
  10. Looking back over the last decade + and despite the excitement it brings to think about Braddock as a starter, I then parade the Golds, Jones, Rogers... through my head and I ask how great would it have been to have a few of those guys with big arms only develop as bullpen studs instead of not at all? I think it's a reasonable call, and one I have a hard time second guessing.
  11. LuCroy was not a terribly high strikeout player last year, but the contact so far has been pretty incredible. Much more interesting though are Gindl's 2 lonely punch outs. In almost 50 ABs that's a rate of 1K/ 23.5 AB compared to last year's 1/4 AB ratio. Sample is still small, but that's a drastic of enough difference that it is hard not to see his year end rate still showing a substantial improvement in contact rate from last year. And on that theme what kind of player does Gindl turn into if his contact rate improves a lot and he keeps on walking at a healthy clip?
  12. I think Rickie was mad his hit streak was snapped, he's spent more time in the Nationals infield then Marquis today http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. It' entirely possible we could have an abundance of OF prospects by the end of this season. I always look at AA as being crucial to guys whose tools are questioned like Gindl. Then again height isn't a tool.
  14. Some fun with Rickie's early numbers. He is currently striking out only once every 5.5 PA (I did this quick and didn't include HBP). That is quite a bit better than his career high of 1/ 4.7. Most of his career he's been closer to one per 4 PA. He is also up 6 BB to 4 K's and on pace to walk nearly 160 times. I don't anticipate he'll continue to see the ball that well, but he can regress on the contact side and on the walk side and still make some pretty big gains. Threaten Prince's BB record perhaps?
  15. Baserunning question I couldn't tell from my TV angle, but I thought Fielder should have scored on Mcgeee's double, mostly because it looked like Casey could have had a triple as it rattled around in the corner.
  16. You definitely have a lot of guys that you can fill in around Braun and Fielder, and crank out winning teams. A few even have All-star potential though not necessarily 1.000 OPS guys.
  17. Given the scarcity of data that actually demonstrates protection affects I am also skeptical that what kind of pitches Gomez may or may not see is that big of a deal. Maybe there is a significant change in pitcher approach. But even then how much of an effect will that have? Historical data suggests little. Historical anecdote makes it sound like this is going to turn him into Willie Mays. My best guess is that following up on rluziniski's idea that because Gomez still swings at junk, they'll continue to throw him junk, and only when they are down late in the count will they be more likely to challenge his straight up. So relatively few ABs will be affected and I'd further posit that in the heat of a particular AB he isn't going to be focused on a big overall trend, but on what that pitcher has done to that point, not making him particularly more likely to guess correctly. End of the day modest improvement at best.
  18. The question in my mind is Weeks plus his replacement ABs by whoever we find to ride the bench that much of a difference maker? The thought of him going all Chase Utley on the league are definitely exciting. But a couple of months of top level performance scattered here and there are not a good value for us. I'd rather be wrong, extend Prince, watch Rickie get too expensive and then trade him in a year or so as he would bring some very good return at that point.
  19. I'd say as much as I like his game, he's too big of a risk. There will be more turn over of this team.
  20. I'm not sure what Crew is going on about, but I think you misunderstand the nature of error in prediction and statistics. But on the point of Braddock there are a multitude of good options ahead of him on the roster, and more importantly as a roster management principle you want as many depth prospects as you can get. You know sooner or later someone will need a DL stint it's much better to have a guy you can call up who could actually replace good performance, instead of some bounce around guy who's going to fill in and hopefully not be too bad. If this was pretty much any other year in the last 3 or 4 Braddock probably breaks camp as one of the best options, this year it's not that clear cut based on his limited higher level innings.
  21. Considering Melvin's past use of very declarative sounding statements, when there was in fact still something going on it's hard to interpret that as anything other than he at least put a call in of some kind. Why things didn't go anywhere is hard to say.
  22. I will generally agree with the point about we tend to get ourselves worked into a frenzy and start releasing players too early. The only compelling reason to release Hart would be to shave a few million off the books for the year in the hopes that somehow we might use that later on a trade. That said a guy like Jayson Werth is a reason to atleast try things for one more year at the current price. My concern with the DL suggestion, was basically as it looks right now he's in a slump and despite Al's dismissal of the sample size at least in Hart's mind and the fans perspective the eye issue and the batting are connected. Changing eye wear every few games and complaining that they don't feel right is not good. The small sample size only reinforces not determines that conclusion. Hart and the Brewers can't afford to let him start the first 3 weeks of the season hitting under the Mendoza line. Macha, Melvin, or his agent needs to sit him down and explain exactly how the season is going to go if he starts off poorly. 1) Edmonds will take over against all right handers. 2) The low initial 50 ABs will keep his numbers suppressed for a very long time even after he adjusts because he'll be getting fewer ABs. 2) He will struggle in more of a bench roll at first. 3) He'll get mad about playing time and start blaming that. 4) The fans won't care what his excuse is. 5) He'll loose his cool and start lashing out in the clubhouse. 6) He'll probably be dumped to a poor team to let him start.
  23. I really like some of the minor league pitching options. If bullpen guys go down I'd almost be excited to call up Axford or Braddock at this point. It really saves alot on roster management, and performance when you've got some depth you can actually look forward to using at the upper minor league levels. Perhaps a more interesting question is who does everyone think would be the starter most likely to be called up say around midseason? Butler clearly would be on the radar particularly if it was looking like a spot start I'd imagine. Given the rollercoaster don't you think Melvin would love to give Rogers a shot if he was doing well in AA?
