  1. If Burnes was under 100 pitches I'd be more tempted to let him go for the complete game, but then again I'm still tempted. There was that stretch though were it seemed like we were letting the starters go too long, so I'm not sure it matters.
  2. If we played in the other Central still we'd have a half game lead in first place still...
  3. It certainly seems like management has been eyeing some of these changes in future prospects. Combined with sooner or later moving to automatic balls and strikes catcher defense will be concentrated heavily on throwing arm and blocking where Quero seems to be well thought of already. All those speedy OFer will also see their value increase. Those 80's and 90's teams that had multiple base stealers along with some true specialists were fun to listen to.
  4. If nothing else looking at Avi and JBJ's lines should give us some relief at the moves we did make or this team is almost certainly under .500 for the year.
  5. Primary OF/ DH rotation next year Yelich, Hiura, Frelick, Mitchell, Renfoe, Taylor. Between flexibility, match-up options and defense there is definite room for offensive growth and defensive growth. Turang at second definitely improves the infield defense enough to be a good bet to at least equal Wong's total value this year on both offense and defense with the advantage of more upside. Catcher was one of the bigger steps back this year and moving in the youth direction provides some upside as well. Scramble the bullpen options with some mix of trades and signings, and look for development in the rotation with some more neutral luck on pitching injuries. It's a viable mix consistent with things Stearns has generally done well (find bullpen options, mix and match) that is reasonable since there was a lot of players taking a half step back on the major league side and really only Huira coming on strong a benefit limited by his lack of playing time. Yelick has also outperformed the last 2 years, but only modestly so he can't really make up for so many players doing just a bit worse. And as usual Stearn could pull off a move we don't see coming, maybe at 3rd or catcher or even 1st.
  6. Drifting into defense more has anybody done a team wide look at defense this year vs. last? I'm curious how much of the drop-off in pitching this year is attributable to defensive decline. I know we have some in CF as well, but I don't think anyone has objections to seeing less JBJ at the plate. The good news is that all those AAA prospects give us a lot of options for improving defensively, and at the plate.
  7. It looks like one of those classical Brewers Cubs games in the making.
  8. I love that the TV crew was barely able to get back from the HR highlights from yesterday before Cutch hits another one.
  9. I would agree that I wouldn't be surprised or even disappointed if they started batting him 9th, it generates similar synergy, but I'd really love the impact of the potentially high OBP batting second once he's acclimated. It's also too bad we don't get the giant September rosters anymore as Ruiz would definitely be up to pinch run. In a close and late situation the relative value of swapping him in for Narvaez or Tellez would have been pretty big.
  10. It's also surprising because he wasn't a massively hyped International signing to begin with. Notable sign sure, but it has been an absolutely meteoric rise by any reckoning.
  11. For a weird problem to solve those incentives are actually reasonable. The sweet spot for the team though is that coveted 3rd place finish in ROY which is funny because inevitable there will be rooting for just such an outcome.
  12. I've also been happy that Chourio has been successful but not dominating so far at A+. He seems to be getting enough challenge to find some things to work on, but not getting mired in a huge slump.
  13. If I am running Yelich and Frelick at the top of the lineup, I want my number 3 to be one of my not slow players and at least OK at making contact. Nothing like the K machine and GIDP to shortcut getting an early run on the board. I'd almost be tempted to go with Wong the rest of the way, but maybe Cutch/ Hiura platoon.
  14. Yelich and Frelick at the top of the order looks really exciting at the moment potentially a lot of synergy their with each player's current skill sets.
  15. It's a relatively small sample size but at the moment Sal has twice as many walks in AAA (6 so far) compared to Ks (3).
  16. Yelich's slash line as a leadoff hitter is better than most of Rickey Henderson's individual years from the 1980's (similar to the current run environment) and it is better than his career slash line. As much as I'm a Rickey fan his 80% success rate is rather close to the break even point so his copious steals aren't quite the bonus value. He also wasn't a great defender. So if my LF can SLG into the .400 provide great base running in all facets and lead the league in OBP that is worth the contract.
  17. It's worth pointing out that Yelich is currently 10th in the NL in OBP for the Fullseason. His .412 mark as a leadoff hitter would lead both leagues. It's not MVP level, but he isn't being paid quite like an MVP player either. And he is being used at the top of the order, so we are getting reasonable value from him at the moment.
  18. I miss the old way of just putting everyone through for the August trade deadline. Given his bounce back I'd think really hard about letting him go if that were the case and with the number of OF prospects we suddenly have in AAA.
  19. Well Sal Frelick his hit better at A+, AA, and now AAA then Tyrone Taylor ever did and Tyrone even got to hit for a year in Colorado Springs. I say this as a big fan of what Taylor has done for us, but a few more weeks of Frelick abusing AAA and he would have a strong argument for jumping in to at least platoon in CF and see if he can help more than Davis (no complaints about what he has been able to contribute either) but there could still be internal offense boosts coming. For that matter Turang could get a shot to play the Jace Peterson role as well...
  20. I do think a reasonable case can be made for Frelick at number 1 and then Chourio depending on how one weighs ceiling vs. closeness to majors. That A ball to AA jump is still a pretty big deal, and Frelick has been showing his own hit tool like crazy at AA and now AAA.
  21. Chourio singles again to improve 4-4 on the night.
  22. I took me awhile to realize, but Wong's April was JBJ level terrible offensively and since then he's been in line or better compared to his career. Since his May was merely normal numbers his entire season still looked bad for awhile.
  23. B- for definite longterm improvements, and short term adding bullpen depth is pretty significant. On the bat side I kind of expect Ruiz, and then Mitchell or Frelick to potentially get shots at sharing time with Taylor before the season end. Not a guarantee but there is an avenue there for adding some possible upside to that roster spot.
