  1. When mid-range players drop off they become replacement level pretty fast. The top level players can fall off and still give you 3-4 WAR seasons, which might not be great but still contributes positively to the team.
  2. Pretty big W, played Arizona hard but narrowly lost the series to come back and beat a contender on the road in a 4 game series after some deflating injury news. That is definitely big.
  3. Having gone back out into the market recently after 15 years in one place, not a ton of fun even though I had in demand skills, and in a very good market. I definitely observed a lot of it's not what you know, but who you know. One position I was told it was basically a toss up between me and another candidate. I'm guessing while both of us had experience the other candidate probably had less, so there was cost savings. I had another interview that seemed positive, but no follow-up. A third where they let me know they chose another candidate. After getting job#4 I was able to determine that I was replacing the person who got job #3 because their spouse also worked there. This was actually a good thing for both of us because we each end up cutting 20+ minutes off commute times. I was also able to figure out at job #4 that my wife was not hired previously because they had found a younger/ cheaper candidate who also had family working there.
  4. I'd argue that Cousins has already had a more successful career than his more famous Cousin(s).
  5. Bryce Wilson currently leading the team in saves, and it's a good thing.
  6. That's getting into territory where you would seriously consider DHing your position player...
  7. The Cards get Arizona at home next followed by their own big 10 game West coast trip.
  8. Especially in this thread it is easy to forget a variety of concerns about not chasing the highest yields, but 6 month CDs are getting close to 5% now, and even normal money markets are getting close to 2% if you think you'll need the cash sooner. It is surprising they wouldn't have caught on to the impact of rates when you have good sized balances.
  9. On the other hand while I could even see Frelick being a notably better player than Taylor, he may well have way more value in trade if we are dealing an OFer. Taylor could net us a potentially useful player, but maybe Frelick is the key part that can net us more of a difference maker, maybe a starting pitcher who is about to enter arbitration? Or maybe just multiple younger pitchers?
  10. Best run differential in the league, Pirates though do have a bit of smoke and mirrors look with a -2 run differential at the moment.
  11. Junk really should work on a knuckleball...
  12. Between being right handed, good defense and veteran enough to handle bench duty that Taylor is a good fit as a 5th OFer (he's already shown himself to be an above average 4th OFer). Filling DH ABs isn't terribly difficult, so I think it just comes down to having some emergency type options for 1st base.
  13. Bullpen is the safe bet, and I agree it's tough to find another likely candidate at this point. I'd love a true fixture at first base, if we could dangle an OFer and get value that way, but no really good options spring to mind.
  14. I don't think anyone has signed Tom Selleck...
  15. What would it cost to just have Wolf make the 3rd round pick?
  16. Varland as a rule 5 pick-up has been one great move so far.
  17. West coast trips are always tough, I hope Yelich keeps a bit of that willingness to ambush first pitches every so often and making good contact. That should get him back to the near 20HRs and 30+ doubles he had before his MVP seasons. And at the top of the order that works pretty well.
  18. I think the hot start is mostly important for giving everyone some positives to look back on. The rookies already know how to manage the pitch clock, so I can see some of the pitchers still adjusting to that aspect giving those guys some advantage that might shift later. Inevitably the league will try to pitch them differently as well, so the slumps will happen. But having that hot start along with good all around skills will make it much easier to give them some of the time it naturally takes to work through those. I also kind of like how all that speed and energy is clustered in the line-up. Basically Rowdy (and some of the other slow players) are not super likely to be clogging things up with the way most of the line-ups are running.
  19. The combo of start time and pace of play for yesterday was pretty amazing. I couldn't believe actually having time after a baseball game to watch some other TV. I might even bother to tune in now to West coast games. Definitely a fun start to the season and still undefeated 4-0 AW (after Weimer).
  20. With the rest patterns and Yelich getting older it is very possible to imagine 5 players splitting those 4 'starting' positions next year or so. For this year Brock is spot on, if someone struggles or there is another injury we have another option to try.
  21. In his ongoing quest to Wally Pip, Tyrone I am predicting an opening day cycle for Weimer with an OF assist just for good measure.
  22. Bold IGT prediction we will talk about the Brewers record after calling up Weimer the way we talked about the team record after trading for Adames.
  23. More than big offensive numbers, I think at this point a recall would involve either a lot of players really falling on their face or a ton of injuries. We have plenty of DHs/ 1B types so I would guess Frelick is more likely to get a call if you want another hitter since he has more versatility. So I'm inclined to think the Brewers would have to see something on the scouting side indicating he had made adjustments.
  24. I'm not sure I heard he tends to double clutch on throws to across the diamond if the first basemen doesn't take the proper route to the bag.
  25. Could say a lot, but mostly happy for the players. In my mind the next round they should advocate for a joint pension type set-up with MLB, where you'd get credit for total years of service (also very helpful for players who have their service time messed with). Obviously a career minor league wouldn't get the same level of benefit payout.
