  1. Mauer's terrific, but he's not Pujols. But there should be no shame in that. Plus, the nature of the position is going to keep him out of some games, and he's missed several others on his own.
  2. My Sansui cassette deck (circa 1982) sheds a tear for your loss. I fondly remember those old Pioneers. I must have known 8 guys in high school and college who had them. A solid piece of equipment, and fairly heavy, if memory serves. Drop the needle on a Van Halen or Cars record, and I'm right back there. . .
  3. I agree that Major Hochstetter was a better villan, but I prefer mine to have a bumbling, ineffective quality. For example, Saddam was quite a villan, but Saddam emerging from the spiderhole was much more satisfying. And Patrick, that was a fine call on Reggie Jackson. I remember a photo from The Milwaukee Journal in 1979 with Reggie and Mike Caldwell in a fight, where Reggie is choking Caldwell and his eyes are bulging like one of those stress-reducing squeeze toys. Jackson was GREAT at playing the hated rival.
  4. Good topic! Here are some of mine in no particular order, though this order is fine: 1--Newman--Seinfeld 2--Mojo Jojo--Powerpuff Girls 3--Biff--Back to the Future 4--Niedermeyer--Animal House 5--Reggie Mantle--Archie Comics 6--Bobby Heenan--AWA & WWE 7--General Burkhalter--Hogan's Heroes 8--Clubber Lang--Rocky III
  5. It seems that whenever he was interviewed or featured on television, he was a terrific guy. Very talented, innovative and kind. May we all live such a life.
  6. I don't know why this was ever positioned as though we were buying a stadium for the Brewers. That's hardly the case. We were buying a stadium for ourselves so that we could watch Brewers games in a new building. What difference did it make that the Brewers were a for profit entity. They were a for profit club playing in County Stadium, which was also publicly funded. Unfortunately, this became an argument about corporate welfare, when the real beneficiaries are the fans who attend the games. That said, I'm for continuing the sales tax until that debt is paid off, and then having it end. I'm not going to hold them to the projection dates, as revenues have fallen short, but that tax is being charged for a specific reason, and once the debt is gone, so should the tax.
  7. Factually, yes, they're still in it. Emotionally, no way.
  8. Agreed on Nixon. . .I skipped past him in looking at their roster on baseball-reference.com. I'll admit, once the light was shined on the Red Sox fans, they became a pretty insufferable lot. The whole Sweet Caroline thing and the ivy league frat boys are extremely unlikable. ESPN chokes us with all that Yanks vs. Sox stuff. . .But for a lot of people who were loyal followers of that Boston franchise, to have finally won after all those years. . .the history, with Bobby Doerr, Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio, Jimmie Foxx, Yaz, Fred Lynn, Rice, Fisk, etc. . .to now have to question the whole '04 team. . .that's just cruel. What if we learned down the road that Braun and Fielder and Gallardo were users? Or Yount or Molitor? After all those hours we spent cheering them on and expressing concern over their performance. . .to learn later that we were being duped? That would matter to us.
  9. How much would it cost to operate the tennis team as a club sport?
  10. Does anyone really care that David Ortiz used steroids in 2003? I do. I don't like being lied to, and I feel that there has been lying going on for 15-20 years. Why invest the time, money and emotion into caring about MLB if the results are largely determined by who is doing a better job of cycling illegal drugs? It's like pulling back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz and seeing that it's just a guy. As it turns out, the real Eric Gagne wasn't a very good pitcher. I don't want him to have all of that glory from his Dodgers days, since his performance was manufactured. With the Ortiz and Manny tests coming out, it plants a seed of doubt about that whole '04 Red Sox team. . .Millar, Lowell, Beckett, Schilling, Damon, Varitek, Nomar, Kapler, Pedro, Foulke. What were we really watching with that group?
  11. After Papi's "confession", I think I have more questions than answers. . .Yes he's on the list, but that doesn't mean he tested positive? And what did he test positive for? Nobody is saying. He says he was careless with the over-the-counter supplements and vitamins he was taking. What was he taking? He didn't say. He's got a connection to Angel Presinal, but that didn't come up at his press conference. Union counsel Michael Weiner--Donald Fehr's successor-- says that Ortiz doesn't know what he tested positive for. But I would think the union has to know. But they're not talking. I guess they don't have to. Ortiz said over and over that he has never bought or used steroids. Honestly, he looked like the kid with a baseball bat, standing next to the broken window, the ball sitting inside on a pile a broken glass, wondering how in the world the window got broken. Gosh dad, I just really don't know. . . And yet, as implausible as it seems, they have established a case--paper thin as it is--that he just doesn't know what he took. To his credit, he says that he has passed 15 tests since then, along with 2 WBC tests. So he's either clean, or just one step ahead of the testing agency.
  12. Thank you very much. As a follow up, Posada grounded out 1-3 in his final at bat. And since Stacy Keibler hasn't responded, I'm guessing I struck out. Swinging. Not sure if Mrs. H5 is celebrating or not. . .
  13. MLB.com has a headline right now that says "Posada flirting with history; Yankees in control". So I look into the story a bit and it says that Posada homered in the 4th inning, and he is a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Really? All he needs is a triple? Jorge Posada has 9 career triples in 1557 games. He's not going to hit a triple today. And so, he's NOT flirting with history--at least any more than to say I'm flirting with Stacy Keibler given the remote chance she happens to be trolling on Brewerfan.net and happens to like the angry scowl of Judge Landis. By the way, Stacy, in case you have indeed stumbled onto this post, you've got a great smile.
  14. The David Maraniss book on Roberto Clemente is the best baseball book I've read in 20 years. I also liked Crazy '08 by Cait Murphy The Big Bam by Leigh Montville (Babe Ruth biography) is excellent. The Glory of Their Times by Lawrence Ritter is a classic, and a great look at early baseball. I just started the biography of Ed Barrow, and so far it's good, though I'm only a few pages into it.
  15. I think the photo is Kennesaw Mountain Landis. Yep.
  16. I'm 95 percent sure my avatar is a public domain photo. I think I got it from the Hall of Fame's website.
  17. It's fine. . .it's just not compelling. There isn't anything on your site that brings me back to look a 2nd or 3rd time. The writing is fine/good. . .but nothing's jumping out at me. It doesn't need to be bombastic, but it should have something unique. Do you have authorization to use the Brewers' logo? And how about the pics that you have. . .are you in danger of using someone else's work without paying for it? Something you might want to look into before getting more involved.
  18. My credit card billing address is in Brookfield, but we're out of the country during most of the baseball season, so I get Brewers games. I think I might actually get all the games, as I'm not in any team's "home territory"--at least I don't think so. . .
  19. He's correct that the HOF will almost certainly induct a steroid user that may or may not later on be revealed as such, then it creates some serious questions/issues about what you do if they are revealed after induction. I think he's saying that they already have a guy in the Hall who was a steroid user. I'm trying to figure out who he is talking about. It's a finite list. And that does create a huge issue, as lots of sportswriters are using steroids as a gate to keep McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, Clemens, Palmeiro out. Plus the suspicions about Piazza, Bagwell, Pudge Rodriguez, and then A-Rod & Manny. . . Or Canseco could just be blowing smoke. . .
  20. "When you tell me something I didn't already know, I'll be surprised," Canseco told ESPN. "And I'll tell you this, Major League Baseball is going to have a big, big problem on their hands when they find out they have a Hall of Famer who's used." When asked to name who that Hall of Fame player is, Canseco refused to divulge who he believes it is. Is the latest quote by Jose Canseco to say that there is a current Baseball Hall of Famer who used steroids? That's going to get the speculators going. . . Rickey Henderson was just inducted. Kirby Puckett? Cal Ripken? Mike Schmidt? Nolan Ryan? Paul Molitor? Dennis Eckersley? Is there someone else who he could be referring to? Canseco is a character for sure, but he's shown some credibility in this mess. . .
  21. Just sign up for it. When you connect to the site, it knows, based on your IP connection whether you are in a certain market or not, Then you get all the games you are eligible for. I have the subscription and use it occasionally. It's easy, and the stream quality is pretty good.
  22. I've started to sour on the whole negativity vibe coming from so many blogs. Admittedly, I'm the same guy who complained about the Brewers having too many jersey types a couple of days ago. . . But even just in the search for good comedy, it's tiresome to read the same worn out old grousing about stuff. The Big Lead, Awful Announcing, Deadspin, they all start to sound the same after awhile. I didn't read the Miller Park one, as I haven't read the others. . . I'm in search of happy. . .
  23. The shrinking of the Journal Sentinel staff is depressing to me. I think there's still room in the world for newspapers with a strong local connection. The problem is, all of their national and international content is avaiilable online 24/7, that there's no need for them to print up day-old AP stories. If they behaved like a true local community newspaper, I think there would be a market for that.
  24. No hate for Turn Ahead the Clock? That too. Actually I was unaware of that one. But I believe the next step will be outfitting the team in footie pajamas and calling it "Christmas Morning When You Were Eight" Night.
  25. I'm getting tired of all the variations of the Brewers uniforms. Home, Away, Alternate, Retro, Turn Back the Clock, Stars & Stripes. . .enough. Give me a home, and a road, and be done with it.
