  1. Cubs using Cishek in the 6th and Brewers using Ray Black in the 6th is a development I wasn’t expecting tonight.
  2. Lol...the same strategy that has helped them win 18 of the last 20. Now people question why they do it. Except without Pomeranz, Guerra, and Hader available.
  3. Why pull Davies after 68 effective pitches when the “A” relievers aren’t available?
  4. With the way the games are playing out tonight, might as well set up the pitching (and health of Moose and Brain) for a Tuesday road game in Washington.
  5. The Brewers made up ELEVEN games on the Cubs in less than 3 weeks to clinch a playoff spot more than four days before the end of the regular season. You could have gotten 10,000:1 odds on that happening.
  6. By late Tuesday night we’ll have pretty good information about the Brewers’ playoff plans. The Nats play Monday, then twice on Tuesday. The Cards will have played twice at Arizona. And the Brewers will have faced Sonny Gray.
  7. Less than two weeks ago the Brewers were 7.5 games behind the Cardinals, 7 games behind the Nationals, and 5 games behind the Cubs.
  8. One game that stands out as having a huge impact on the Brewers’ playoff chances is the 15-14 win at Washington on August 15. The Brewers were down 3 in the 9th, Moose and Braun homered to give the Brewers a 1-run lead, Hader gave up the lead but got out of a bases loaded/no out jam, and they finally held on after Thames’ 14th inning home run. That game could mean the difference between hosting a wildcard game and missing the playoffs.
  9. He’ll likely rest for two days. Maddon using guys 4 times in 5 days and then not resting them led to IL stints and/or ineffectiveness for several relievers. Hader is also so important to this franchise’s future that you don’t want lingering effects of overuse (see Jeffress and Kimbrel). Today’s game was also important to the franchise’s future so it was right to use him today.
  10. With Suter’s small sample dominance and Chase’s decline, this could be the fallback if a high-profile free agent can’t be signed: Woodruff Houser Suter Davies Re-sign, fairly cheap: Lyles Gio
  11. If Yelich is 100% in April, anything else good that happens this season or offseason is just a bonus.
  12. Over the past 2 seasons its’: Brewers 173-135 Cubs 172-136 This Cubs’ team felt like they wouldn’t lose their grip on the division for several years. They beat the Brewers out for high-profile free agents. It’s amazing to me that the Brewers have been able to do what they’ve done.
  13. If Yelich has a year where he isn’t moving around as well as normal, he could solve our first-base problem, which would lead to solving the playing time for Grisham, Braun, and Cain problem.
  14. If Yelich was healthy and continued playing at an 8 WAR pace, pro-rated the Brewers would gain 1 WAR the rest of the way. Having Shaw improve to replacement level the rest of the way would make up a third of the difference.
  15. Hard to believe less than a year ago Burnes was relied on to finish game 6 of the NLCS.
  16. Counsell has improved this year in identifying who the arms are he wants to protect and not overwork them. This has been a downfall of Joe Maddon this year. For instance, Maddon has thrown his key guys 4 times in 5 games much more frequently than Counsell has, and soon after those occurrences have been IL stints. With the disastrous performance or injury situations at starting pitcher, Shaw, Aguilar, and Arica and Cain (at the plate), Counsell’s bullpen management has kept the team in the fringes of the race instead of being several games below .500.
  17. I’d have to think that we were just as disappointed in the 2009 and 2012 playoff-follow up seasons as we are now.
  18. Last year on this date the Brewers were 6 games out of first place and were wrapping up a stretch where during the month of August they had games where they had given up 21, 11, 8, 10, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, and 12 runs. It’s funny that, since the season ended up well (until NLCS game 7), we tend to forget the rockiness of the path. This IGT page may have been the low point: viewtopic.php?f=65&t=37476&start=120
  19. Chacin started four of the biggest games in franchise history: - Gave up 1 run in St. Louis in the postseason clincher - Gave up 1 run at Wrigley in the game 163 division clincher - Gave up 0 runs against Colorado in the game 2 NLDS win - Gave up 0 runs in LA in the game 3 NLCS win. Those 4 games made his entire contract worth it.
  20. Must have made a stop in Cincinnati on his drive from Pittsburgh to Milwaukee.
  21. Must have made a stop in Cincinnati on his drive from Pittsburgh to Milwaukee.
  22. Must have made a stop in Cincinnati on his drive from Pittsburgh to Milwaukee.
  23. Between the 2008 and 2011 playoff runs, with essentially the same core, were two losing seasons. It happens. With a little more health, young pitchers figuring things out, and an acquisition or two, the Brewers can be back in the mix.
  24. Now we know when Albers walked the bases loaded in the 9th against the Twins last week and got out of it, it wasn’t the gameplan - he just got lucky.
