  1. So RBI have more to do with teammates getting on base. But runs have more to do with teammates because they are hitting you in? That makes no sense.
  2. The Phillies signed Thome after Howard completed A ball.
  3. Maybe so, but the Phillies didn't consciously say let's keep Howard's price low and go get Jim Thome!
  4. MVP? Elite territory? Hogwash...he doesn't take walks!
  5. Agreed on Phillips, but Howard was held down in the minors by Philly to keep him cheaper in his prime years. Hence why Howard was pissed at them. Ryan Howard was in the minors because of someone named Jim Thome.
  6. That's great if you decide you don't want to ask. There have been girlfriends of mine in the past, where I wouldn't have even talked about it with her father, because at least in one case A) I didn't like the guy. and B) he wasn't as involved in his daughter's life as much as her mother and stepfather (I would have definitely had a talk with her mother ). Just don't make it out to be some kind of outdated custom and scoff at the idea of showing respect to the parents of the woman you're going to ask to marry you. You don't have to, but don't say everyone is being silly that will do so. It's not a dumb tradition that has no place in today's society, it's being respectful.
  7. It's not necessarily asking, it's declaring your intentions, it's respectful. Standing up for what? Like I said, I guess you don't understand what that is.
  8. Al, it's less about tradition, and more about respect. Parents appreciate it, or at least I've never heard of any parents who've not appreciated it. That's fine if your relationship with your in laws isn't all good and the type for you to overcome your independence, but it's not about tradition as much as it's being a stand up guy...maybe you don't understand what that is?
  9. Actually, since the Boston series, I haven't had too many beefs with Ned Yost. But this whole thing has me getting a tad worried that Ned's going to freak out down the stretch again.
  10. Aren't people saying Parra is on some kind of innings limit? 5-2 lead after six strong? Nice game kid. But no...
  11. Of course, I see the point in Parra's innings concern. But when your manager doesn't even take you out when it's obvious you're gassed, I just don't see them pulling him out of the rotation. Translation: Tonight Yost should have said "atta boy" after the team gave him a three run lead, but no. They'll just wait and cap his workload in crunch time, and they'll miss the playoffs by a game or two again.
  12. "Bill reminds me of a video game announcer. It seems like he has 10 phrases that he just repeats over and over again. " Good call! 'That was a nice approach' As far as Brian Anderson goes, he's not the greatest, I can see why people don't like him all that much. But Daron Sutton? He made Brewers games unwatchable for me. So, I'll take mediocre Brian Anderson over a guy that thinks he's cute and exciting and rams it down your throat every single night like Daron Sutton.
  13. I totally understand the reasoning. I just don't think you're going to see the Brewers move him out of the rotation. And that's a good thing IMO. Maybe if they start running away with the wild card...but if that were the case, they'd most likely be right there with the Cubs as well. I think the best example of why I think the Brewers are thinking more like me (with obvious awareness of the situation) is the fact that they went with Parra from the beginning of the year. They've essentially ended Matt LaPorta's Brewers career (and spent an extra $7 million to do so) for a shot at the playoffs this year, I think a couple dozen innings over a limit for Parra will be worth the risk.
  14. Well I just pulled Jeffress out of the air as an example. I agree they need Parra in the upcoming years. But AndThat, I went and found the thread last year about Gallardo's innings, and people were putting that number in front of a playoff opportunity. Had the Brewers been lucky enough to make the playoffs last year, most people on this website would have had Gallardo coming out of the bullpen...which would have been ridiculous. Parra is kind of in the same boat. At what point do people start realizing that the Brewers aren't going to be a contender in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. Maybe one or two of those years...hopefully at least one of those years. But they are a contender this year. Gallardo's injury this year only reinforces my feelings on going for it now, which would include Manny Parra. Of course, you can be careful with leads and everything, but to say at the end of the season if Parra is 15-7 with a 3.30 ERA and he's at 180 innings and the Brewers are heading in to the playoffs, and you're going to put him in the pen? That's just silly to me.
  15. August 1st? Why? So they can have him in 2011 when they have a nice team and they decide to rest Jeremy Jeffress the same? I understand the innings issue, but a lot of you guys thought that Gallardo was getting shut down last year...didn't happen. Remember, the Brewers are "going for it." Parra is a big part of "it." They also announced that Parra is #3 out of the gate after the All Star Break, as it should be. Again, I understand the concern, but I think people around here are way more concerned than the Brewers brass actually will be in the middle of a pennant race.
  16. LaPorta will be a starting Major Leaguer as soon as he's traded to the Indians or any other team, so I'm not sure how tramatic it really is for him. Also, those that think Manny Parra will be shut down in the playoffs (if the Brewers make it) are absolutely crazy. You were the same people that were preaching when Gallardo would be shut down last year (didn't happen) and the whole philosophy in general would make a trade for Sabathia a bit contradictory wouldn't it?
  17. Exactly. LaPorta and/or Gamel are going to be up next year. The guy doesn't want to be here. The team could probably get a major haul this off season...it's a no-brainer in my opinion.
  18. ---I agree that Prince owes Milwaukee nothing. But Prince has been griping about money. The Brewers have offered it to him. He has turned it down. ---Again, no big deal, his choice. But if you don't think it's OBVIOUS that Prince doesn't want to stay one more day in Milwaukee than he has to, then god bless ya. He's made comments. He's made an even louder statement with not signing a long term deal after crying about not getting paid. You know Milwaukee is offering it to him. He wants out. Now, that doesn't mean he wants out of Milwaukee because he hates Wisconsin. He wants out of Milwaukee, because he (his agent) thinks that New York, Boston, Los Angeles of Anaheim...SOME team is going to give him loads and loads of money instead of just loads that Milwaukee offered. ---Again, that's fine. But he's not exactly following up his 2007 season with a 'wow' type of season. In fact, he's following up his 2007 season with a season he had in 2006. Good? Sure. But he aint 'making' any money this year. My guess is when he gets $6-$7 million next year he'll become a malcontent. That's just my guess. Trade him. He's already had his best season anyway.
  19. We've heard about the long term deal talks with Ryan Braun (obviously) and Prince Fielder. And we've heard about how Rickie Weeks is still a big part of the future (I'm not buying it), but we never really hear about Corey Hart. At the beginning of the year, I thought Hart would have been a priority to sign to a long term contract because he was an important part of the future, AND his price would have been nice. Well, his price is going up...and fast. But still, why haven't we heard about Doug Melvin 'being motivated' to lock up Hart? To me, locking up Hart is more important than locking up Prince Fielder when you take in to consideration what the Brewers could get in return for Prince....or maybe even without taking that in to consideration...maybe even straight up player to player http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif.
  20. Roy Oswalt can't be beat. Josh Beckett, or the Red Sox for that matter can't be beat. Tim Hudson is a stud. I'm so sick of hearing about how good the teams the Brewers face are. Using Ned's logic these no name guys the Brewers keep giving great life moments to tell the grandchildren about are inexcusable...but in those cases, the "battling" just came up short. Puke.
  21. Actually I think that GM owes $10 million (?) to the state for closing at this time. I'm not sure if it was for remodeling or the Highway 11 bypass that was pretty much built just for GM, or both.
  22. Some of the previous posts have me wondering: What exactly is an "American-made car". Chrysler isn't a US company anymore. And aren't Toyota's and Honda's built here in the US? So the Japanese carmakers are employing American workers. So what's the difference, beside the corporate parent not being in the US? The cars the companies build. I'm not against anything because it is American made or an American company. I would love to have an American car. I'm against (for lack of a better word) the American car companies because of the products they roll out. Like I said, I'm not buying a Neon. I'm not buying a Ford Focus. These alternatives that they have "competing" with say the Honda Civic, are not even close as far as quality of car. I've heard great things about the new Impala. And that's great. But I bought a Honda last summer, because I wanted a quality car that got good gas mileage, and one that historically doesn't have major mechanical issues I will end up paying for someday. And by the way, you're right, my Honda was built in Ohio. So the whole taking away American jobs angle just isn't right. I live in Janesville, so this will affect me. But is it really all that surprising that this happened when this plant is building the monster gas guzzlers they are building? GM swam in the profits that these vehicles provided for them the last few years without looking at the big picture. So blame the American consumer? No way. Blame GM.
