  1. I have a new favorite movie of the year, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. Simply an outstanding documentary about two classic arcade gamers who are trying to set the world record for Donkey Kong. What starts out as a simple documentary about video games at some point morphs into an epic battle of good versus evil, and eventually becomes a metaphor for the struggles of simply getting thru life. It's both heartbreaking and hilarious, topped with an outstanding soundtrack of 80's hits. A documentary about nerds who think a high score in Centipede will make girls like you has simply no business being this damn good.
  2. Have you tried eBay?
  3. I would imagine given a set of continents that 20% of Americans (and probably of the world, if not more) couldn't point out North America, thus making it impossible to locate the USA. But who cares if infants, toddlers, and people with Alzheimer's can find any America? Or did you mean 20% of a pre-determined set of Americans, not a representative one? I mean, let's be honest, "20%" is an absurdly ambiguous stat that's being tossed around rather freely as fact. About the only thing you can determine based off of that question and her response is that she isn't a statistics major. The rest of it screams bias.
  4. No worries. My little sister is in a similar dilema at the moment. But like I said, I can't see any reason why your parents wouldn't be willing. With the money you'd save on the prescription you should easily be able to cover your share of gas if that is an issue. Your parents are already making two round trips a week for you, so your new offer to them is one less trip and you save $100. Sounds like a slam dunk negotiation to me.
  5. Call me crazy, but have you tried asking your parents if they are willing to do this? Brewerfan is a great resource and all, but I'm not quite sure we are a substitute for parental units quite yet. I would be suprised if they said no. It's not adding any additional trips for them, in fact it's reducing the number of trips. I can't really see any issue why they wouldn't want to drive you less times to and from work each week.
  6. No, you are right. It certainly well within the realm of possibility that this was more then a simple traffic accident.
  7. Eddie had several traffic related incidents during his tenure with the Timberwolves. The most well known was when he hit another car while drunk driving while also masturbating to pornography that was playing in his SUV. To me that seems like enough reason to think he's capable of making some horrendous decisions while intoxicated.
  8. Here is a better version of that LaPorta picture. Figured it might be wanted by a few of us. http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/8321/laportapl9.jpg
  9. It's a shame. The kid oozed talent yet had demons following him since High School. It is too bad he was never able to overcome them.
  10. I certainly think their is some cause to be concerned, but I have to lean more towards FTJ's general take. Try to be as stabilizing a presence as possible for your nephew, and realize that he is only seven years old with almost zero male guidance in his life.
  11. The idea is definitely unoriginal, and the film is clearly influenced by Napoleon Dynamite. I just found the characters far more interesting, as their flaws seemed much more realistic and fleshed out then what you would normally see in a movie. And while I can understand why it has gotten mixed reviews, I still found it highly enjoyable.
  12. Peaceful Warrior is directed by Victor Salva, who is a convicted pedophile. Please don't rent his movies. Saw Superbad last night, and while I enjoyed it, the high point was easily the opening credits, which are downright glorious.
  13. I saw Eagle vs Shark months ago, and mentioned it as one of my favorites of the year just a few posts ago.
  14. Already a thread devoted to this signing here.
  15. Bullpen help seems likely, and probably a few reserves to help deepen the bench. Gwynn and Aquino seem fairly likely.
  16. I have several friends down in Tampa who I routinely quiz on hurricanes. Being a land-locked Midwesterner, I know I haven't the faintest idea how those things work. From what they tell me it's far worse when a Hurricane hits the Gulf, as the warmer waters allow it to build up strength and easily alter it's path. They basically compare it to a buzzsaw thay is building up steam before it rockets off in some unknown direction. Yuck.
  17. It definitely gets fuzzy with foreign release dates. Pan's Labyrinth, Black Book, and The Lives of Others are all considered 2006 films, and were eligible for the Oscars last year because of it. The only one of those I didn't see this year was Black Book, which is definitely a great film to watch and one that would be on my must see list for either year. So I basically ignore them for this year. The Host I am unsure on eligibility, but it's on my list for this year, along with Hot Fuzz. A couple other great Foreign films that have come out this year are The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Paprika, Day Watch, and Rescue Dawn. Sunshine and Eagle vs Shark wouldn't be far off either. So while that averages out to about one a month, I guess I am just spoiled from the past few years in which great Indie and Foreign films came out on almost a weekly basis. But you are right, compared to the meager offerings of the mainstream, foreign films are certainly holding their end of the bargain. Come to think of it, I might be more disappointed with US Indie films this year, as I think Sicko is the only one I can think of that has been worth watching. Everything else has been pretty meager. I can't wait to hear your feelings on Zodiac Robert. Besides being a great film, it has me incredibly excited with what Fincher could do with Torso if it ever gets off the ground.
  18. Hot Fuzz is the best movie of the summer. Release date be damned! And coming from someone who averages viewing ~150 new releases each year (Man I love my job) it hasn't been a very good year for movies so far. It's been a good year for hype, but not much more. Zodiac is the only mainstream film that has impressed me so far, and the Indie and foreign films haven't been much better. That being said, with Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, The Coen Brothers, Charlie Kaufman, and Ang Lee all having movies slated for this fall/winter, it could be a very good year. And those are just the big name releases coming out, their are a ton of smaller Indie films and limited release schedules coming out that could make this an impressive year.
  19. Sounds like an admission that I'm still coming out ahead. Huzzah!
  20. I'm not a student, so that nets me tens of thousands more then mothership.
  21. Outside of comic book fans, of which there are plenty, I would strongly argue that Gaiman has almost zero name recognition. His fans are devout and buy his books immediately, but they haven't had much staying power on the list. That, and he's only had three books to ever make the list (American Gods, Sandman Endless Nights, and Anansi Boys), with Anansi Boys the only one to ever reach #1. There is a reason why they are not using his name in any promo for the film, it's because he isn't considered a positive commodity in Hollywood. His fans will come, maybe (Mirrormask made less than $1 million and the majority of that was here in Minneapolis), but he certainly isn't viewed as any sort of long-term drawing card. That's what DeNiro, Pfeiffer, et al are for. That being said, with Beowulf coming out this fall, and Coraline later next year, Gaiman is poised to be a breakout star. But for the moment, he has little to no mass appeal in terms as a script writer/producer. And being that I am a long-time ardent fan myself, having been to I don't know how many signings and attending even more of his readings, I'm quite content in realizing his appeal isn't to a very broad audience. He even makes light of it himself, as he tells the tale of his Mall of America signing disaster with relish almost any chance he gets. But go see the movie with thousands of friends and I will happily admit I am completely wrong.
  22. If Hall is traded to the Tigers they'd move him back to SS and move Guillen to either 3B, 1B, or DH to protect him from injuries. It might not take much more then Hall and Gwynn to convince the Tigers to make a deal for Granderson.
  23. Went and saw Stardust yesterday. Pretty solid movie, and a worthy follow up for Matthew Vaughn after his brilliant debut with Layer Cake. It's going to be tough for it to find an audience, as Gaiman really seems like more of a niche author, and Stardust doesn't have quite the rabid following as say Good Omens or The Sandman. Buzz seems to be pretty favorable, but I don't know if the audience will follow, what with Harry Potter mania still in full effect. That all being said, Robert DeNiro as a gay pirate is cinematic gold.
  24. Well, I am unable to use anything but the quick reply box with Firefox. It's quite annoying.
