I think general consensus is that the Brewers didn't get a commensurate return. But people always look at it in a vacuum. No one is gonna look back at this trade when the Brewers can sign a stud away from his college commitment during the draft.
Even this Hader retrospective has the Padres "easily winning the trade".

Yeah I mean if you only look at the players acquired it looks bad. But dig a little deeper:
- The Brewers still have Gasser who may sneak into the rotation this year
- The Brewers traded Ruiz and got William Contreras and Joel Payamps
A back-end starter, very solid bullpen guy, and controllable all-star catcher seems like a decent return for a closer with one year left until free agency.
I think that story is BS leaked by Orr's agent. It's possible the agent told the Ravens Orr had an offer from GB to get leverage and then someone in their front office leaked it to press.
edit: also this
Not exactly apples to apples deals. The Padres also traded Grisham in that deal. And King is 28 years old and will be a free agent in 2026.
Anyway, hard to judge a trade until the dust settles in 3, 4 years.
Depending on how things shake out they may be better if they pitch for weak contact:
“If the Brewers go Ortiz at third, Adames at short and Brice Turang at second, that’s the best infield defense in baseball even with Rhys Hoskins at first,” the scout said.
I think the Packers are getting a guy with the same amount of NFL experience and success as a lot of the guys mentioned in this thread as potential replacements.
No one roasted Andy Reid for going for it on 4th and 1 from Baltimore's 13. I'm sure had Baltimore won people would have. Which is why coaches are reluctant to do it. Had the Lions converted one of those 4th down attempts and won, I doubt anyone would point to that play as a turning point in the game. But because they didn't convert and ultimately lost everyone points to those specific plays as huge missteps..
I don't know the math on it but if the boldface is true then it seems to me that going for it and potentially sealing the game on a single play was worth the risk.
First of all, nice use of the word "cromulent" :)
I do not disagree with any of what you've written. I don't, however, think he is the type of player that should have his number retired (officially or unofficially). Walk of Fame? Yes, of course.
