  1. Uncertain where to put this info, but with Hank Steinbrenner lambasting his team for not having focus, I thought this was an appropriate location. I have a soft spot for Rodriguez since he played here in Appleton and donated an athletic field, so I feel a little sorry for him that he did this to himself. I mean Madonna.....really? http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-yankees-rodriguez&prov=ap&type=lgns

  3. Just an educated guess on my part, but with Pena, Qualls and Lyons, I am wondering if out target might be a guy like Juan Cruz, who is a pretty decent pitcher, and would demand something decent in return.
  4. Watch Milwaukee, but also watch Tampa, my bet is on one of the two. Tampa could give more arms, for sure, while the Brewers have the better bats ready to move. A recent injury to top prospect Jake Davis (oops, I meant Jake McGee) may hamper Tampa a little bit, as his recent diagnosis of needing Tommy John will take a possible chip off the table.
  5. I do not know much about what he throws, but I remembered the name. This is simply info from when he was promoted to AAA. RHP Greg Reinhard will join the I-Cubs from double-A Tennessee tonight. A sixth round draft selection by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2005, Reinhard was acquired by the Cubs in a trade with the Rays on Feb. 13, 2007 for Jae-Kuk Ryu. In 17 games with Tennessee, Reinhard posted a 1-1 record with a 2.90 ERA. In 31 innings, Reinhard allowed 10 runs on 24 hits and struck out 33.
  6. With all the talk of top prospects getting traded, it must be noted that beyond the tremendous H-Ville team, the Brewers might be able to draw upon some of their organizational depth and back-up at certain positions, all the while not hampering any of their minor league clubs. Periard might actually have some surprising value to other clubs that do not need a quick fix or go solely on mph when evaluating
  7. Just to restate the level of pitching we are talking about with this acquisition, in Sabathia's last 10 starts he has averaged 8 6 2 2 1 8. Averaging 8 innings over a 10 start span is just awesome.
  8. Well, Gamel is not 3 inches taller...sorry, but no way in heck. Gamel is listed at 6 foot even and LaPorta at 6'1. And though :LaPorta's barrel chest may have given a false impression of height, I can assure you that Gamel is not 3 inches taller. They were batting 3 and 4 in the "B" game and were standing right next to each other swinging their leaded bats.
  9. Even though there listed heighth suggests differently, pretty much everyone who's seen them would say Gamel also offers a bigger target at 1B X, After seeing them next to each other during a B game in spring training, I think that LaPorta was the bigger guy.
  10. The Brewers really have some serious depth. though Bramhall's omission was a bit of a surprise, it is leaving off Efrain Nieves that is my issue o' the month. That guy would have been a 2nd or 3rd rounder in a 2007 redraft.
  11. I know we should be happy with getting an astounding ten guys named to the all-star squad, but I think it is slightly criminal that Cole Gillespie got overlooked....the guy is having a great season (10th in the 10 team Southern League in OPS), and I think batting average myopia of some of those selecting the team may have cost him the berth. The top ten OPS list in the Southern League includes 5 Brewer prospects, with every one of those 5 being younger than any of the other teams players in the top ten. Also, I know the Huntsville team results have been seen as disappointing by some, but their overall, full-season record is the best so far in the Southern League... http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=l_sta&lid=l111&sid=l111
  12. Since he signed so quickly, there is plenty of time for him to get an additional 20-30 innings this summer, as I'm guessing the Brewers don't want him to get much more than that after his heavy spring workload. Thanks for the response Colby, and I hope that your indication of a true plan for Romanski is actually the case. Any insight as to why Charlie Greene was managing the other day? Edit: To answer my own question - culled from the Helena game story: Manager Rene Gonzales attended a family wedding and missed his second straight game. Oh well. During my spring training visit, I learned that Charlie Greene is VERY well regarded by everyone he comes in contact with, so I was hoping this might have been a real bump up for him.
  13. I know I have not been shy about questioning Rene Gonzales as a manager (and by the way, did I miss why the very highly regarded Charlie Greene was managing the other day), but Mass brought up some salient questions about the Helena roster management. To piggyback off of that, I am wondering what the Brewers are doing with their 4th round pick, as the two-way star was apparently drafted as a pitcher, but has yet to make a pitching appearance, instead going 5 for 12 with 3 doubles as a DH. Is this the way they are going to go with him, or do they simply not have a real plan? My level of confidence in some aspects of our minor league management structure is starting to wane.
  14. "We didn't have much offense today, but in a one-run game, you don't need much offense," - Rene Gonzales Wow, that statement right there might have to go into my sig. Very Yogi Berra'esque. Sorry, but I really think this guy has hamsters running around in his noggin.
  15. Well, in the last 15 minutes, Helena has added Ned Yost the 12th as a coach, so maybe Rene will have a little added help, though Rene clearly has a vote of confidence from Al.
  16. I was going to make this a separate thread but I want to tread carefully here with my criticism. Namely, I am not impressed with what I have seen from Rene Gonzales, and am a little worried that he is, or will be, hampering the development of some of our prospects at Helena. His lineups are very weird, with a transitioning pitcher batting cleanup, a polished college hitter in Komatsu batting 8th, and Duran batting 7th. His commentary so far has also been odd (his Dykstra comments are 180 degrees opposite of what we have heard from the Brewers), and his post-game comments have been riddled with endless apologies so far. His track record, as limited as it is, is the third strike for me, as his managing of the Arizona Brewers last year also seemed lacking, and he ended up with a 19-37 record. The first hand accounts of the Helena team seeming listless and poorly coached also make me nervous. With the influx of pitching talent and a truly mismached roster I am not sure this guy is the right person for the job.
  17. Impossible to research, but I would wager that not too many professional pitchers have ever given up 3 separate 3 run homers in one appearance like Butler did tonight.
  18. I just got back from the game, as I was in the area to interview for a job, and Wheeler actually missed a 2nd homer by inches, in almost the same spot as the first - an opposite field shot right down the right field line...he also made 2 nice plays at short, though he made one brutal baserunning blunder. Rivas was sitting at 90, and gave up a run on a bloop. LaCroy lined a bullet to the pitcher, and looked good behind the plate. It was nice to see Lee Haydal get the start...he has blinding speed. I also got to meet them all before the game as every player was in a meet and greet/autograph line. The Greensboro stadium is the nicest minor league stadium I have been to, and that includes some AA and AAA parks.
  19. Should MLB call a doctor if a game goes 4 hours or longer? That was very clever. Bravo.
  20. In the midst of the Brewers 8th inning meltdown, the Colorado Rockies' Jeff Baker slid into Weeks in a manner just as dirty as Crisp did to the Rays player. I have no idea how Weeks came out of the play without a torn ACL. The Brewers did not even remotely balk at the play, which seemed as bush league as bush can get to me.
  21. With the Brewers drafting Nick Bucci in the 18th, it looks like the Brewers are going after the entire Canadian junior national team. here is a link to Bucci: http://www.teamontariobaseball.com/index.php3?command=full&story=304
  22. It is always nice when you can get the best name in the draft, as I think we just did in drafting 17 year old Stosh Wawrzasek. Oops, after doing a little research, Stosh is actually a pitcher and a teammate of Lawrie from British columbia, and was seen at one point as being a better prospect that Lawrie....big kid too that has topped out at 95 mph and was seen potentially as a 3rd rounder. http://www.perfectgame.org/players/playerprofile.aspx?ID=130200 http://www.bclocalnews.com/sports/Dont_think_just_throw_the_ball.html?period=W&mpStartDate=05-29-2008
  23. It is interesting to note that the Brewers have drafting closers from high level college programs in 3 of the last 4 rounds....The WCC was highly scouted by the crew as well, as the Brewers have now selected 4 players i believe from that conference....12 pitchers drafted now in the first 15 rounds.
  24. The 7th rounder goes by the name Trey, here is some info about him. He averaged 11 k's per 9. http://www.acusports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=8900&ATCLID=753211
