  1. When I first heard of this a few weeks ago I believe it was Gross and Jackson for some minor league pitchers named Drew Miller and Jermey Hefner. That does not sound right to me, as Miller and Jackson are pretty much a wash, and Hefner is a 2007 draftee. Methinks that was just some spitballin' going on.
  2. With the Gallardo injury, I believe that keeping Claudio around is pretty much a certainty
  3. I just asked my wife, who is an MRI Tech, what is the time frame for doing an effective MRI, and she indicated it can be the same day as the injury, with full read-out reliability. There is no need to wait for the swelling to go down.
  4. That quote regarding Fielder is just stunning. Yost is truly a buffoon. An arrogant guy that thinks he has all the answers. In a different town, say Boston or New York, that article/interview would be the final nail in his coffin, and fan sentiment would ride him out of town before spring training ended. Ted Simmons, who is anything but dumb, is going to have quite the eventful time trying to reign in this goof.
  5. And yet, so many BF.netters still find a way to do nothing but sweat the small stuff. "Oh no, Yost said this," etc. Take off the pessimist panties and start to enjoy what is to be a very fun year. Why drive this thread in that direction. I wish strikes could be given for baiting.
  6. Ken Tremendous is friggin' Mose? Yep, I had a chance to talk to him for a while in October when I met him at the Ofice convention in Scranton, and of course, never brought up sports....wish I would have now.
  7. Once My favorite movie of the last few years. I was totally blown away by the heart of this movie. As Robert said, it was seamless. Made in 17 days for $130,000 the singers/songwriters of this film were outstanding. Only 18 at the time of the film, the main actress is dazzling, and Glen Hansard could not have done a better job with his role. Loved this movie. Zodiac Very Long. Very good. Very Smart.
  8. I caught the Doug Melvin tv interview this morning at 8:30 on the Time Warner (channel 32) sports show. Not sure how to find it again, but I do know they replay their shows usually.
  9. I just finished up a Dennis Krause interview with Doug Melvin on his Time Warner Sports show, and it had some great stuff on it which I think I will just meld into this conversation. In regard to Yost, it is obvious that Melvin does not have a ton of trust in his game to game abilities. Melvin stated that this should be an easy club to manage, and that his moves in the offseason have been done with partially in mind. I think Melvin respects Yost's ability to keep players on an even keel, but that is about it. Simmons is definitely a Kuehn-in-waiting (hopefully some get that reference). Other comments that were interesting included Melvin stating that he was told by other GM's that Kendell was seen as a big reason for Haren's success in Oakland. Melvin said that Estrada was not regarded as a good game-caller for pitchers with marginal stuff - which to me signals Bush and Capuano, and harkens me back to the comment Estrada made about having a good relationship with the pitchers that contributed down the stretch. Also, Weeks was talked up as having a breakout year, Corey Hart was lauded for his defensive abilities, and JJ Hardy's strike zone judgement was questioned. Also, Melvin mentioned that he wanted to recoup the pitching prospects he has given away if there is any trade coming up before the season starts. Overall, a really good interview that restored some of my "In Doug I trust" feelings that have been eroding away over the last 18 months or so.
  10. I know we have a ton of things stickied right now, but could we keep this at the top somehow? As someone going to spring training from March 1st to March 8th, this thread has a bunch of information that I would like to reference.
  11. Wow - interesting chain of events. Buck Rogers is a brilliant guy, I urge everyone to search his name on brewerfan for some of last year's articles. The guy has tremendous energy and ideas, and a great sense of context and humor.
  12. The Welfare talk needs to stop right now or this thread is going to get locked Don't tase my thread, bro.
  13. One thing I noted in the 2007 season is that many umpires were giving me the impression that they hated the sport, and that it was simply a job to get a paycheck, which was a claim made by both former umps Tom Gorman and Ron Lusiano in their books decades earlier. Given the comments by Hirschbeck in this article, where he is livid that MLB is asking rather pointed questions of his neighbors, I have to postulate was again that there is a great schism occuring between the umpires and the entity of baseball as a whole. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=Amx_bsNG4IR8Wa9JugiY7UE5nYcB?slug=ap-umpires-backgroundchecks&prov=ap&type=lgns
  14. Denver, with a population of 568,465, reported 1,748 violent crimes, including 19 homicides, during the first six months of 2007, according to FBI data released this month. Milwaukee, with a population of 581,005, reported 3,984 violent crimes, including 50 homicides. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=711750 That initial line, culled from the JS story on the murder of a Miller Brewing Exec., is stunning, and puts numbers to exactly how dangerous Milwaukee really is. The death of the Miller executive will likely not cause SAB to rethink its longterm options, but as the story suggests, it came at a pretty rough time. Also, as the story mentions later with its naming of the victim's life partner, it will be interesting if more comes out in regard to potential hate crime factors, as it seems odd that the guy was shot after he had already given up his wallet.
  15. Bay, Nady, and Morris all commenting on how they think the Pirates did nothing in the off-season to improve upon their 94 loss 2007. This team really does not do justice to their jewel of a ballpark. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AsMg6SwIPRzxZSx79_UVzgsRvLYF?slug=ap-pirates-bay&prov=ap&type=lgns
  16. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-congress-steroids-add&prov=ap&type=lgns This piece is an interesting tie-in - especially considering the suspension of both Cameron and Salome.
  17. Whoa nelly - Blalock is a significantly better fielder than Braun. His metric rankings from his full seasons have him in the upper half of the league, iirc. Just because he's not great doesn't mean he's not much better than Braun. Ryan was catastrophically bad in 2007. I simply disagree with you here. I believe defensive metric ratings are absolute garbage, and that Braun is projectable defensively. The wave of anti-Braun (at third) sentiment has bertainly been rising over the last several months. I choose to not hop on, as I think he has the tools to succeed, with repetition.
  18. Blalock had a .935 fielding percentage last year, and though people villify Braun's defense last year for a reason, I think that Braun has more defensive tools at his disposal than Blalock, who is a stiff defender with a lot of problems charging balls.
  19. Really exciting to see that level of speed in the system. My avatar indicates what I think of Brewer, and I think his development has been shrouded a bit by other players in the system, and his rough defense at short. Ford and Brewer may be 2 of the top 5 athletes in all of minor league baseball right now. I would love to see a very savvy bunting instructor down in Arizona to work with both of these guys.
  20. Coach, I just want to say thanks for the updates. Please continue, and know that Pogokat, though he is a mod here, does not speak for all of us here. I happen to believe your presentation and not his. Keep the info coming.
  21. I think he was validictorian of his class, so they actually may have played a factor. Also, he actually is just a Flowers freakout and Krabbenhoeft injury from 8-12 minutes a game...
  22. I think that those that want to take part in this forum, for all its warts, should do so as long as there is some element of differentiation between the " Hey, look at what I thought up" stuff, and the true information gleaned from other sources. I will say that the adopt a prospect idea was a wonderful one that was basically shut down to protect the clarity of information coming from the site. I think this off-season on brewerfan would have been a great deal more interesting if this feature would have been endorsed.
  23. I will contact brewcrewreview again, but that has already been done with no results. Edit: And the emails have the brewcrewreview email in parenthesis.
  24. I signed up for brewcrewreview's updates a couple of years ago, before I found out what they were all about, and now, over the last few months I have been getting emails from them with weird text - largely dating service type stuff. I have not been opening the emails, just deleting them, but they have been getting more frequent. Any one else getting this stuff, and can anything be done?
