  1. Lidge was a starter in the minors until non-stop injuries forced a move to the pen. Street and Cordero were 1st round picks (I think Lidge was an early pick too IIRC). Do you think the Brewers should use there 1st round picks on college closers? Myself, I don't, because I wouldn't want to end up with a Ryan Wagner or a David Aardsma. I think your better off drafting higher ceiling position players, create a surplus, and then trade for bullpen help.
  2. I agree they can afford 1 of the 2, but that doesn't mean keeping one of them would be the best deal the team could make. Sheets has a long history of injury, possibly due in part to his disdain for conditioning, and Sebathia was grossly fat before he started his contract push, what will happen when they get a monster longterm contract? I'm guessing someone will be disappointed. I have no problem with the team spending huge money on a great player, but they need to avoid risk. The player the team should invest a monster contract in this offseason is Mark Teixeira . He is a true professional, with reliable production despite playing for 3 teams in the last 2 years. He is in the middle of his prime, has no history of injury, and is a well conditioned athlete who's production should stay strong longer than most. He is a gold glove caliber defender who would represent a huge upgrade defensively at 1B. Offensively, he has a career OPS over 900, and would actually even increase the teams OBA. I agree with the premise of the original poster, the safest way to aquire quality production for the rotation is via trade, and signing Teixeira would allow the Brewers to deal the massive and massively disappointing Fielder for pitching help.
  3. I expect my home team announcer to be a homer, my only problem with Anderson is that he's extremely boring, and Rock is pretty dry as well, which makes them rather uninteresting. I realize they are better than most, but just because other teams are too ignorant to replace there non-performers doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for excellence.
  4. Gagne should be released to clear a spot for Joe Bateman. Bateman pitched his butt off in the minors to earn this oppurtunity, and should be rewarded. Bateman could be the next Cla Meridith, Chad Bradford, or Brad Ziegler. We already know what Gane is, a soon to be retired baseball player.
  5. Jack Z has only had 13 picks in the 1st 2 rounds of his 1st 8 drafts, and he has only used 4 of them on pitchers. 1 of them,Gallardo, is outstanding, and another, Jeffress, is an outstanding prospect. Jack Z has done an awesome job considering he is stuck working in the confines of paying slot value for his picks. The team drafted as many pitchers in the 1st 2 rounds of the draft this year as it did in Z's 1st 8 years. It will be exciting to watch them develop. As for Inmn, Melvin did an outstanding job of dealing him when his value was highest, as its become pretty clear that his future is in the pen. At the time of the deal, many called it horrible because they projected Inman to end 2008 as part of the Brewers rotation. Instead, he hasn't even hit AAA yet. As for building a better pen, the Brewers need to do what teams with successful pens have done. They've either picked up relievers in trade just befoe they've broken out, or sign Japanese relievers. The Brewers don't even scout Japan, and barely do anything in the DR or Venezuela, because Attanosio doesn't give the team nearly the baseball budgett we're lead to believe. The biggest thing the Brewers can do is stop wasting innings and money on Doug Melvin's greatest mistake, Derrick Turnbow. The could have been dumped in trade each ofthe last 2 offseasons, but Melvin was too attached to move on.
  6. Will Brantley still represent Milwaukee in the AFL?
  7. Lawrie had doubles this spring against MLB pitchers Kyle Davies ad Luke Hochevar. He's faced higher caliber pitchers than Fryer has seen this year. I like Fryer, as he's regarded as a top athlete, but his bat isn't in Lawrie's league. This is the 1st time in Fryer's career he has hit. Don't call Lawrie a HS hitter, as he hasn't faced typical HS caliber pitchers since he was 14.
  8. To me, the scary thing about Fielder is not the 150 point drop in OPS this year, its what if it continues next year. With his defense, he's no longer an asset if his OPS drops any farther.
  9. I saw Bray throw 92 MPH fastballs in the AAA All-Star game last year, so he's not a total soft tosser. However, his stuff is pretty mediocre. I do agree that the Melvin has done a wretched job with the Brewer bullpen. Theres no reason to continue to stick with Gagne. Dillard and Batemen have earned an oppurtunity.
  10. Come on Russ, your way to smart to not realize how misleading ERA can be. His ERA would have been dramatically different if he wouldn't have had the worst defensive team in baseball playing behind and catching him. IIRC, its $2 million in revenue per every 100,000 in attendence. There is very limited tickets available for the remainder of the games, the team will be over 3.2 million in attendence.
  11. I really don't think the AFL assignments have anything to do with this. The Brewers ares simply responsible for providing a player in the position they reserved in the AFL. If Brantley is dealt, they'll just send Cain to the AFL. As for Green, Cain, and Gillespie being injured right now, thats not a factor either. These players will not play for Cleveland until spring training. All these players will be 100% well before then.
  12. The only way a team can improve there expected runs scored is to improve its team OPS. Tarvares is a significant downgrade from Cameron in OPS, so he would cause us to score fewer runs. Also, his OPS would have a greater impact on the team OPS, as he'd get more plate appearences than Cameron does because the leadoff spot gets more ABs. That increases the negative impact Tavares would have.
  13. Escobar is slightly better than Hardy was at AA, and has more natural ability. i don't know why you'd suggest he'd struggle offensively. Hardy would have very good range for a 2B. He would convert outs in the same rate, but now his ability to do that would be compared to the inferior defenders that play 2B. Hardy converts outs because he has soft hands and gets throws off quickly. If all the players who played SS moved to 2B, the expected range factor at 2B would increase dramtically. If Weeks had better range than Hardy, he'd play SS, but he doesn't.Its not the balls you can get to, its the balls you get to an actually convert into outs. Weeks rarely has his body in position to make throws, because he fights the ball fielding it. he's improving, but is still a tick below average as a 2B.
  14. I agree with the others above that Gamel's promotion only makes sense if he's going to Milwaukee in September. Nashville is an easier place to hit than Huntsville, so he could build a little confidence before joining the bigs. Gamel is showing signs of finding himself at the plate, hitting 293 over his last 10. The only other scenario I could see that might have prompted Gamel's promotion is if Lawrie is assigned to a team to finish out the season, and that might set off a chain reaction.
  15. SS's make 3 times as much as 2Bs that can play SS? I think you've made a gross exageration. If Hardy was on the open market, he'd be paid according to where the highest bidding was signing him to play. In arbitration, he'd be paid for the position he played, not the position he's about to play. Also, even if Hardy was moved to 2B, he'd be the back-up SS and get starts there. That would free the Brewers roster from having to carry a backup SS, and those guys rarely can hit.
  16. I posted this in a thread about who will get September call-ups, but I think its merits would best be discussed here; I wouldn't be suprised if Salame got the call. He is the Clubs hottest minor league bat right now, and would an outstanding PH option. As a catcher who lacks instinct, he could benefit greatly from sitting next to Ted Simmons for 30 days. He's in his 5th pro season, so he'll have to be added to the 40 in he offseason. I think the absolute most important thing the team needs to do with him is develop his defense in any way possible, and adding 30 days to his service time is a fair tradeoff if this helps make him a tollerable MLB defender.

  18. Keep starters intact, sign Eric Hinske as the 4th OF. He gives us the lefty bat that pounds righthanders that we're looking for, and use Hart as the back-up CF. He'd likely jump at the chance to play for his home state team, and 4th OFs get alot of ABs.
  19. Houston right now holds the 15th pick of next year draft, which they wouldn't have to give up if they signed Sheets. However, there hot right now, and could easily jump to the 16th pick, which they would have to give up for Sheets. That would make them the perfect destination for Sheets, Giving us # 16 and a sandwich pick that should be between 32-35 (Sebathia will be the highest rated FA, giving us pick #31). Those are the picks we used to pick Lawrie and Odorrizzi this year.
  20. I don't talk to scouts, but BA does, and his lack of speed is in there profile of him, and we had an article in here earlier in the year with comments from a scout who stated the need for Angel to dramitically improve his defense because his speed wouldn't allow him to play anywhere else, to just name a few.
  21. I's add Stocker, ewven if it meant not adding Gwynn. Stocker is the best basestealer in the organization, and he outhit Gwynn while in AAA this year.
  22. Sorry, but that statistic is not even close to being true. Every scout that has seen him calls his speed well below average.
  23. The Brewers need to find a way to get more OPS out of there roster full of underachievers. Weeks, Fielder, and hart need to hit more, and I don't care if they do it versus righties or lefties. The wins count the same. Having Branyan platooning at 3rd all year instead of Hall playing full time, will give the team a little more OPS versus righties. A lefty hitting OF might help, but everyone would like 1 of those off there bench, so they get overvalued $$ wise. Eric Hinske would likely jump at the chance to play for his local team, and he smacks righties pretty well.
  24. Al, you consistently point out the inconsistencies of batting average, so I'll have to ask you, do you expect Salame to hit 340 in the majors? Without the average, the slugging disapates. Salame has a consistent right field first approach, which might allow him to hit for a big average, but not too many guys with 30 speed (or anyone else) hit 340 in the majors.
  25. Thanks And That, Battlekow, and TheCrew07, you've all illaberated on my points perfectly. I have nothing personal against Salome, from what I hear, he's a great guy and has terrific work ethic, but as The Crew07 points out, it almost seems as he lacks baseball instinct. Thats scary, because as And That points out, theres a million facets to playing the catcher position. Compounding the problem more is the fact that the Brewers will likely always have a number of young starting pitchers that could use the guidance of a smart catcher. Battlekow has it right that Gamel doesn't have to play 3rd to make it, and if anyone has held Gamel (or more so the Brewers organization) accountable for his defense, its me.
