  1. Vargas has always been a guy I thought had a relievers stuff. Sinker/Slider guy without a worthwhile 3rd pitch needed for starting. The Brewers put him in the pen a little in 2007, but not long enough to settle in. He looks great now, and is a big find going into 2010. While the bullpen might not be completely settle, we have all the guys we need to pitch the high leverage innings, so we don't need to use any resources to add anything more to the pen. As Bamberger mentions, Zack Braddock could become a major factor in the pen sometime during next season too.
  2. . Thats just untrue. His 2 lowest OPS months were his 1st 2 months. He improved from there. As for the strikeouts, I'm glad his weakness is a completely useless stat, and not something that actually affects how many runs a team scores.
  3. Olivio and Buck both have nice power, but will require multi-year deals, and some money that is earmarked for pitching. I'd rather sign Henry Blanco for about $1 million. Blanco put up a 703 OPS this year. Thats the 3rd time in 4 years he's been over 700, the only year he wasn't was in 2007, when he got just 54 ABs because of injury. His offense, because of greater OBA, is very close to Buck and Oliva, and he is far superior defensively. He's a perfect fit for us, and would likely jump at a chance to get regular playing time. It wouldn't shock me to see him hit even better as a regular.
  4. It was great to see Gamel finish strong. He ended up with a 760 OPS, above average for the position. As I said earlier, his numbers are skewed by the PH ABs that nowhere does well in, and DH ABs, a role young players rarely do well in. Gamels OPS as a 3B was 864. Yeah, I'll take that. He needs to be our starting 3B next year.
  5. I will almost guarantee one of the 3Bs get traded. The Brewers are in great position to trade, as we have surplus position players, and more importantly, we can take on a large salary.
  6. Boston picked up just about every injured pitcher available last offseason. The result? They wasted a ton of money. I'm not saying you can't catch lightening in a bottle, but its extremely risky. My guess is the team trades for an expensive pitcher, and then a few more pitchers.
  7. Maine would jump at the chance to come here if we add Rick Peterson as our pitching coach. Maine was an underacheiving nobody before he got with Peterson, and has regressed since the Mets fired him.
  8. How come they never show "grounded out to the SS" leaders, or at least "grounded into double play" leaders? Those are every bit as relevent. Cameron finished the season 4.5 WAR. Bringing him back is a no brainer. He was the 3rd most productive player on the team, by a fairly wide margin.
  9. Before last season Tampa was one of the worst franchices in the history of modern baseball. Baltimore has been brutal too. Toronto's sceduale has been no tougher than anyone elses.
  10. nobody wanted Looper this year, and that was before he went out and had a terrible season and showed abvious regresion. When was the last time a -.7 WAR pitcher got a guaranteed deal? If Narveson starts ahead of Suppan and/or Bush, he would obviously be more important to are playoff chances. You can get alot of odd pitching results, alot of anomallies, but you can't fake the ability to K a batter an inning.
  11. It has Wellemeyer below replacement level too. However, Wellemeyer had better periferils than Suppan.
  12. Only in the extremely inaccurate view you use to judge pitchers. That group you just called terrible in 2008 was actually 15 Wins Above Replacement that year. Our 5 man rotation was a laughable 2.6 WAR this year. Even if we substitute Looper, Bush, and Suppan's 2008 results into this years total, the rotation would have still only been 6.1 WAR. Thats not contender material. Our problem wasn't depth, it was the fact that our starting 5 was terrible, old, and regressed consistently. Vasquez was 1.5 more WAR last year than Dave Bush has been the last 3 years combined.
  13. Suppan has been below replacement level for 2 years running.
  14. Thats the worst rotation I've seen in years, and I have proof. Looper is awful, Bush is awful, Suppan is awful. They combined to be .9 Wins Below Replacement this year. Bush might have a better chance, if we were giving odds, than Parra to be 1.5 WAR next year. However, that won't get us to the post season. You'd have to agree that theres better odds of Parra being 3 WAR next year than Bush. Parra has potential. Theres no reason to pay Dave Bush. Guys like him deserve $1 million plus incentives, not guaranteed $5 million.
  15. I don't see Narveson as a Gary Gover type, this guy has above average velocity for a lefty. He's been our 2nd best starting pitcher this year. Gallardo gets 1 rotation spot, the other 4 are wide open. This guy has definately been a welcome suprise. If the Brewers can get 8 WAR combined from the 2-5 rotation spots next yeaar, they are a clear contender.
  16. Melvin has stated repeatedly that the team was close to making a major pitching addition at the deadline. Do you think there was any chance that pitcher was cheap?Pretty sure it was Kazmir, Peavey, or Halladay, they're definately not cheap. Forbes will have the figures for us in a few months, and it will show the Brewers as 1 of the most profitable teams in baseball yet again. Last year was the only year since Attanosio bought the team that they only were minorly profitable.
  17. Hawing, why would such an upbeat person say something so grotesquely morbid?
  18. Unlike most of our staff, he at least has a legit fastball. I don't remember him throwing that hard in his 1st stint with us, but he came back up with a vengence. Was there some kind of mechanical tweak they made with him?
  19. Well, I did, and I can't believe it. I thought Dick Pole was funny, but Rusty Kuntz is funnier. Sounds like a medical condition my wife gets.
  20. Why do we need to? The team was profitable in 2008 with a higher year end salary and lower attendance. The team has been extremely profitable this year. The team had room to make a major midseason addition, but our record dissuaded that. If they increase the payroll, they then have a chance to add the players needed to create a buzz for next year, which would help maintain ticket sales. Cutting payroll would be a PR nightmare. Then they might as well dump Melvin, and Fielder, and completely start over. I agree. Why go with an unproven, likely unproductive CF, when you can just resign a proven, consistent, ultra-durable CF coming off a 4.5 WAR season?
  21. I'm building hope that no news about Macha means there could be change Brewing. Its odd that they told us there would be an announcement, and then there's nothing. Why wait? The only reason to wait is if he's getting canned. He has been a colossal disappointment.
  22. JP made a slew have terrible deals, ruined a once great farm system, and gave out terrible contracts like thet were lollipops. Despite a huge budget, and the fact that he inherited some great players, he ran them into a hopeless situation.
  23. I think those people are referring to Wins Above Replacement. That stat doesn't use a pitchers W/L record. That stat has Looper below replacement level, which is pretty accurate. We suck this year because 4 of our rotation spots have combined to be below replacement level. As for Brantley, he won't be good for a few years, and this team has money to spend on real players. Al continues to live in the past and assumes we have a bottom feeder payroll. In a few years he might realize we drew 3 million fans in 2009.
  24. Suppan starting instead of Narveson? I'm getting sick of this organization. When did they turn into herd of morons?
