  1. You severely discount his steals, but yes I'd give that up. I don't think Ponce will be a major leaguer. Totally agree on Ponce. Gordon scored 114 runs last year and has won a Gold Glove at 2B. He's a far, far better player than Villar.
  2. The thought was the Cubs were in on Cobb because of the Maddon connection. This doesn't preclude their signing Cobb also but interesting that this deal was done first. Brewers could have pushed the price up enough on Cobb.
  3. Villar was good for 5 months in 2016. The rest of his career his numbers don't justify his being a regular on a contender. He's got some power, but not enough to justify his high strikeout rate, and his getting on base is part function of his inability to put the ball in play, not because he's got a high degree of patience or great eye at the plate. Throw in his sub-par defense and lapses on the basepaths, and again he wouldn't be in my lineup. I'd take Merrifield in a heartbeat solely on defense and ability to make contact. Plus he can steal a base too and had 19 HR last year. Merrifield was almost a 4 WAR player in 2017 compared to Villar's 0.1 per B-R. A complete no-brainer.
  4. The Padres did similar deals with the trio of Cahill, Chacin, and Richard last year, but all 3 of those guys had much much better form the prior year than Peralta. Frankly, any time Peralta entered the game, I just hoped none of the shots he gave up hit him in his head. Minor is not a good comparison either. His issue was injuries. He missed 2 full seasons. Peralta's never had any arm issues. Mike Fiers is the kind a guy you give a deal to like Peralta's. Miguel Gonzalez who was at times pretty good for the White Sox is another. There are others. Most of those guys get signed in late January at the earliest. It's shocking a team would sign Peralta at this point in the offseason.
  5. Why don't we wait and see what the roster looks like heading into the season? One thing is certain. There will be additions and subtractions. I still find it hard to believe that Villar, who was not the backup at 2B at the end of they year but at best the 3rd string, or 4th string guy, is in any way a lock to make this team much less be the leadoff hitter. 2016 was the anomaly season in what has been a lackluster career overall for Villar.
  6. If Quintana does not recover a bit or Lester does not, you could be right. I think you're severely underrating Contreras, Baez, Rizzo, Happ, Bryant, Almora, Schwarber, Russell. Not all of them are MVP candidates, but that's a very very good team all smack dab in the middle of their primes right now. They may not be the top World Series contender due to lack of ace pitching at this point, but I'd put them as the division favorite for each of the next 4 years, pending the Brewers and maybe Cards roster makeup going forward. Obviously plenty can change halfway through that span of time. They can just overpay for pitching. It'll still be an Achilles heel, but it'll be good enough to get them to the playoffs each year. What does Quintana have to recover from? He posted the best FIP among their starters last year of 3.25 and I'd argue put the final nail in the Brewers coffin with his performance on the next to last Sunday of the season. They'll land a couple of starters either via trade or free agency and are the team to beat. The Cubs pockets are deep but they don't have an unlimited budget. They are still in the midst of putting a lot of money in and around Wrigley. Eventually that will add to their revenue stream but not for a few more years.
  7. Satchel Paige pitched 3 scoreless innings for the 1965 Kansas City A's at age 58. That was mostly a Charlie Finley publicity stunt though. Similarly, Bill Veeck activated Minnie Minoso at age 50 in 1976 and again in 1980 at age 54. He went 1 for 8 in 76 and 0 for 2 in 1980. Minoso has the distinction of playing in 5 different decades. I'm sure in his mind Palmiero believes he can do it. Reality is there's no way his reflexes can handle 98 mph fastballs. Maybe 93-94, but 98? No way.
  8. Nobody's ever accused him of soft tossing and his fastball averaged 96 last year. Velocity has never been his problem. Command and movement are the issues. Back in 2014, his fastball had more sink and he commanded his slider better.
  9. How bad is the pitching situation in Kansas City? They just gave Wily Peralta a major leaguer deal worth $1.575 million plus incentives. Good for Wily. Hope he rebounds though I have my doubts.
  10. The Royals could use flippable guys like Junior Guerra and Hernan Perez or Villar as they would have opportunities for a rebuilding club. Perez or Villar could conceivably take over their SS position with the expected departure of Escobar and Guerra could take an open rotation spot. So include them with say Harrison and Ortiz.
  11. In theory, that makes him a clear #2. Only in theory would a guy who only once logged more than 150 innings and never made more than 26 starts be a #2. He's got some value but part of what KC would be getting back is a pretty substantial salary obligation off their books. He's a realistic target though and Brewers have the chips to get him though I'm inclined to hold on to Burnes.
  12. I think they could use a lefty specialist too. Yes they have Suter and can keep Hader there but neither are pure lefty specialists. Otherwise Wang could stick in that role but he's far from proven. Maybe sign Rondon and Duensing, and then bring back Swarzak.
  13. I actually like Stroman more than Archer. Santana straight up? Then get a bat in FA?
  14. He's had some minor injury issues the last couple years and Maddon lost confidence in him, but his stuff is still very good. I wouldn't break the bank for him, but I think he'd fit very well as a fall back if they can't re-sign Swarzak.
  15. I'd rather have both and get rid of Drake. The fact that they looked to save money on these two tells me they are reasonably confident they can sign Swarzak. Otherwise, why non tender a guy like Hughes who gave them some solid if not real consistent work in high leverage situations?
  16. Burnes, Peralta and Hiura are on my list. Anyone else including Brinson I'd be willing to deal for the right guy. Phillips showed me enough in the last month to consider Brinson available for the right price.
  17. Susac might be the most vulnerable of anyone on the 40 man. I doubt he survives until spring.
  18. Astros undoubtedly plan to non tender him if he's not traded by tomorrow. If a team trades for him, then they will have to pay him his arbitration amount. The chances he's traded are almost nil. So I'd just wait and then negotiate. I have to think he's got good feelings about his time as a Brewer. Regardless of his being a former Brewer, he's the kind of guy worth taking a flier on for a team wanting some rotation depth. He might even have to take a minor league deal that comes with a camp invite and an opt out.
  19. Maybe if Reds include Gennett in the deal and take Villar. Seriously, do you really want to help a division rival down the road by overpaying for a relief pitcher? Bad enough that they have Cubs and Cardinals to contend with for the foreseeable future.
  20. Cubs aren't interested because of the Lester and Heyward contracts already on their books, and they plan to go after Harper when he becomes available. Then there is the huge money it will take to keep Rizzo and Bryant in a few years.
  21. Except he's taking a spot on the 40 man. Seems like a guy who could have been had with a minor league deal.
  22. I'm not sure I'd want any of my prospects playing in Venezuela these days.
  23. The biggest mistake would be holding on to him in hopes he re-establishes value. How do you justify him being back in the starting lineup? If he can't be dealt, non-tender him. They waived a much more established player last spring (Gennett) to make room for him. That decision cost them a playoff berth. If I'm the GM who made that mistake, I want no part of Villar going forward.
  24. His OBP was .005 points lower than Thames. And his career OBP is exactly the same as Thames OBP was this year. If he’s no good at getting on base then neither is Thames. Abreu is also 4 years younger than Thames. Abreu is actually just 2 months younger than Thames. But your point about OBP is correct. A slugger's job isn't to get on base anyway, it's to drive in the guys who are on base. Part of Thames on base ability is that he struggles with putting balls in play, and thus naturally gets deeper in counts Abreu has reached 100 RBI in every season, all on some weak White Sox teams. Thames hit .180 with RISP. That doesn't get it done. Abreu would be a clear upgrade. I'd offer them Thames, Broxton and one prospect not in the Brewer's top 5, and another outside the top 25.
  25. True, but I don't think expectations will be low based on this one flawed premature projection. Plenty of guys underachieved last year. Besides the obvious, Villar, I contend Braun underachieved considerably. So did Broxton. Let's not forget the first 6 weeks of Feliz as the closer. Marginal underachievers were Perez, Thames (other than one exceptional month), and even Davies. How do we know Shaw and Santana overachieved as both are just now reaching their primes? And it's ridiculous to think a guy like Arcia who had been a consensus top 10 prospect overachieved. In my opinion, he's the most talented player on the roster and the arrow is still clearly pointing up. I would not be surprised to see him in the All Star game this season.
