  1. If Hader stays in the pen, his role will be the same as it was in 2017 and that is going multiple innings every 4th day or so. Do you really trust Barnes in the 8th inning? I don't. He's got value but he's not a top set up guy by any means. He's simply too inconsistent. At best he's a 7th inning option. I see Jeffress taklng over the Jared Hughes/Carlos Torres role getting working anywhere from the 6th though the 8th depending on who needs a day of rest. They need a reliable if not top line 8th inning guy, that's capable of closing if Knebel goes down for any stretch. They had that going into last year with Knebel. If Knebel goes down, my guess is Hader closes, but that takes him away as the multi inning weapon or as an option to transition to start.
  2. His bat doesn't scream major league regular at this point. 2016 looks like an outlier but he's young enough to still be developing. But Hiura could be a premier bat and that's the future at 2B.
  3. You must have missed my post in the Jesse Chavez thread. That was a sign that Stearns was looking at the bottom of the bin. What's Claudio Vargas doing these days? Tomorrow we may hear about John Axford signing a 2 year deal to be the set up man.
  4. Earlier in the week in the thread about Jesse Chavez, I said "if you are going to shop at that level, why not just bring back Yo. At least he was good at one time" I was half kidding. Maybe the vendors were complaining about Garza not coming back? Seems to me Yo was not exactly a fast worker either. Encouraged to read that Gallardo's velocity was up last year and his swinging strike rate was the highest since 2011. Anyone else think J J Hardy would make a nice option at 2B?
  5. He started well in 2016 too. He didn't allow a run in his first 12 appearances that year and had an 0.57 ERA on May 9th. He fell off as the team started to sink. Have to think that guys brought in behind him didn't strand too many of his runners either.
  6. MLBTR quotes Crasnick tweet that "an unknown team is expected to sign Matt Albers to a two year deal next week". Albers was dominant last year at age 34 but he's been up and down. Stearns should know him. He was an Astro briefly in 2014.
  7. Add in Wang and Yungman We have a number of AAAA arms that will fill in nicely in our pen. No need to go nutso in a year we will not be in a contention position. One quality reliever should hold us over until the trade deadline. "we will not be in contention". So you have the ability to look into the future? Essentially the same roster was one game short of playoffs last year. Your plan {go with AAAA arms) assures them of not being in contention. Sure perhaps they'll find one or two among their system who'll emerge as a late inning option, but odds are that will be after a number get tried and fail dooming the season. I'm frankly dumbfounded that at the same time they are entertaining spending big dollars on a FA starter or using multiple assets to trade for one that they won't pay the going rate to bolster their pen. We're two months from spring training and there is no 8th inning set up man on this roster and most of the FA options are off the board.
  8. If they trade Santana, I think they go out and get a veteran bat that will allow them to ease in Brinson. Someone like Ethier or Melky Cabrera would make a ton of sense as either would be fine options to spell Braun once or twice a week also. I still think Broxton gets dealt either separately or as part of the deal. I don't see the need to keep 3 guys who'd primary position is CF, especially a backup with severe contact issues. As for Archer, he's a 5 inning ace, not a true ace. Most of the runs and HR he allows are in 6th and 7th innings. With the Brewers still short in the bullpen, I don't think his impact will be all that great.
  9. He'll be marketed as close to an ace, but his recent numbers don't justify it. He got hit hard on more than a few occasions last year.
  10. Well Villar doesn't have close to the value of Starlin Castro, so that's not a similar offer to the one for Stanton. Why would it need to be similar to the Stanton offer? Stanton had 10/295 remaining and Greinke has 4/138 - they're both getting paid an absurd amount annually but Greinke is only 4yrs and if someone takes on the full dollar amount it's still 6yrs less and half the cost of Stanton. You overestimate Castro's value. His 2013/2015 seasons were 2017 Villar. 2016 he was still below average. His past 5yrs he's been highly inconsistent. Villar's 2016 was also better than anything Castro's done in his career. Castro's worst year (2015) was better than all but one year of Villar's career. Villar is coming off a 0.1 WAR season. Castro is coming off a 2.0 WAR season. Castro is also just a year older.
  11. I'd add they need a quality hitter that won't strike out 150 times. The obvious opening is 2B, though I think they can be aggressive and go after real impact bat anywhere and let the chips fall where they may.
  12. Stearns is quoted as saying he's not going to pay the going rate for quality relievers: "Stearns confirmed he made a two year offer to Swarzak but didn't want to guarantee that much money" Swarzak's deal was reasonable compared to the others of quality out there. Brewers refusal to pay going rate for players when they have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball is an ominous sign. What does he think some prime reliever is going to get overlooked and fall into their laps? That's how you end up with Neftali Feliz. Sure there's plenty of names still out there. Guys like Craig Stammen, Matt Belisle, Tyler Clippard, Drew Storen, Romo etc. But most of those guy are past their primes. Somebody even mentioned Zach Duke. Really? Why not bring back Feliz too.
  13. Stearns stated he's not going to pay the going rate for quality relievers. Problem is generally you get what you pay for. Last year guys like Holland and Davis got a little too rich for him so he "settled" on Feliz for $5.35 million, when for a million more he might have grabbed Holland. How'd that work out? Might have cost them a playoff berth you say? You'd be right. This team desperately needs not one but two quality relievers minimum, one lefty and one righty yet he refused to even pay to keep Hughes, at what undoubtedly would be a bargain compared to the numbers for guys on the open market and now virtually all the guys out there with proven track records are off the board.
  14. They drew just 2,134,375 despite winning 93 games. That was 11th among the NL. It's not unlike the franchises in Florida. A lot of people in the area have allegiances to other teams.
  15. Well Villar doesn't have close to the value of Starlin Castro, so that's not a similar offer to the one for Stanton.
  16. Walker is holding out for a 3rd year. Taking the Angels out of the equation helps.
  17. Straily is a useful starter but he doesn't move the needle much. You don't give up anyone you think could be a core player the next year or two, but some low level lottery guys maybe along with an extra major league piece would be fine.
  18. Did I miss something or are the Cubs and Cards set to lose a bunch of talent for 19 and 20 and not make more shrewd moves before then? Ever since the Cubs came out of the All Star game last year, Theo's been kicking Stearns behind and now we have the Cardinals getting just what they were after. I'm not sold that Stearns is some boy genius. He's hit on some and missed on others. But doing nothing won't cut it either. From reports that have surfaced it seems that his focus is all over the place whereas the main competitors are focused and getting done what they set out to do. I'm concerned because as of now, this roster isn't as good as the one that finished the year. Letting Swarzak go elsewhere for really an amount that is in line with other late inning relievers is concerning. Are they really ready to pay the going price for quality? Doesn't seem so.
  19. I don't see Swarzak's deal as an overpay. That's the market. Stearns shying away from paying the market price for a guy who had expressed interest in returning is troubling.
  20. Villar isn't going to get them a 4 time All Star still in his prime and relatively cheap. Be real. Villar and Broxton won't either.
  21. Stage of a the rebuild? They were one game out of playoffs. The farm system is well stocked. The focus has changed from rebuild to how do they get over the finish line while the two main adversaries are still in a bit of a transition and guys like Shaw, Thames and Braun still are productive.
  22. Sunday promotions are aimed at making the entire experience a fun one for families. Getting families in the park is essential for creating new fans. That's the lifeblood of a franchise. Why anyone would have a problem with that is beyond me.
  23. There's a lot of innings to be filled over the course of the season. Not only is Hughes gone, but so is Torres. Brewers owe it to themselves to explore the reliever market for proven talent. The guys with options are there to fill in when needed.
  24. [sarcasm]Not if we sign JD Martinez to replace him.[/sarcasm] I know this is in blue but Martinez scares me a lot. I think some team is going to back up the truck for him and I think they'll be happy with it for a year or two before his contract becomes a disaster. If he signs for 6 years, he's 35 in the final year. That's the price of poker. Brewers won't be paying Braun in the last two of those six.
  25. I just don't see it. Maybe Brewers just using "interest" to get Walker to bite on one less year. I think they really prefer Walker's LH bat.
