  1. With Anderson likely down a month at least, there's urgency to find a starter that fill in well enough to keep the Brewers afloat. There's a lot of names being mentioned as available. Some are at a big price in talent like Quintana and Gray. Others have huge contract obligations like Cueto and the Shark in SF. A few bargain names are out there in SD and a few other places. Personally, I'd roll the dice and get Burnes to Milwaukee. Guys make the jump from AA to the big leagues all the time. Heck the Reds pitcher tonight looks pretty impressive.
  2. Yah, that isn't happening. Unfortunately not even Woodruff era. They aren't going to throw in the towel with some fringe major league arm. Hader or Burnes will be starting on Monday.
  3. And the chances the same thing happens to Torres and Drake are equal or better than the chances the likes of Wang, Cravy, and Blazek being any better. There's quality proven bullpen arms available on the trade market. Feliz proved to be a bust, but that doesn't mean they should shy away from adding a quality late inning guy even if requires spending more money than they budgeted for last winter. That budget was based on the assumption that the Cubs were a lock.
  4. Perez could handle everyday 2B job. He'll be needed less in utility role with young OF around. Sogard's market won't preclude Brewers going that way too.
  5. He should flip flop with Thames in the batting order. He's an emerging star.
  6. 3-4, not 3-6. 2-1 vs SD, 1-2 vs. ATL, and 0-1 so far vs. Cincy.
  7. I haven't watched the end of the game...but that seems silly if Aguilar was available. Lefty/righty matchup. For his career, Aguilar (smallish sample) has an OPS of .707 vs RHP, Vogt has a career OPS of .750 vs RHP. Statistically, it was slightly better to go with Vogt. Aguilar's OPS vs. RHP this year is .827. Vogt's is .675. That might have been the dumbest move by Counsell all year. Was he summoning Ned Yost?
  8. I am sure they could. Jean Segura had that value despite 2.5 years of terrible performance and only a half season of stardom. Jonathan Villar has had success before coming here and was an offensive force all of last year. Personally I would expect more than what we got for Segura. I'd like to retract my earlier post. After thinking about it, I don't think Villar's value is all that high and will only go lower as a part time player. He's arby eligible and without options. His 2016 numbers will boost his arby award to where I'm not sure the Brewers won't non-tender him. I disagree that "he had success before coming here". He was a .236/.300/.353 hitter as an Astro where he came up on perhaps the worst team of this century, the 2013 Houston team that lost 111 games. Stearns probably saw him as the perfect tanking team player when he surrendered fringe prospect Cy Sneed for him. Get the 2017 version of Cy Sneed and appreciate the $20 million mistake was avoided and move on. Dubon is only a year away remember.
  9. Good call on these two, perhaps the only "under the radar" guys to emerge this year so far other than Ramirez part 2. Derby's turnaround from 2016 when he wasn't under the radar has been amazing and Griep's having a really nice season at Carolina.
  10. Lets not overlook Ivan De Jesus Jr.'s night. 5 for 5, 3 RBI, 2 Runs scored. As if this franchise doesn't already have infield depth, De Jesus has posted .347/.410/.463 and actually his career major league numbers are comparable to Sogard's. Might there be a team out there looking for a versatile bench player?
  11. That's true, but it doesn't diminish the fact that in 2015 and 2016, Vogt was a bonafide first string major league catcher who put up decent numbers (combined WAR of 5.7) playing 136 and 137 games respectively. He got off to a slow start in 2017 and as a 32 year old on a team that doesn't draw, they were likely going to non-tender him after this year anyway and decided to save some money this year by waiving him with a younger cheaper lefty hitting catcher in Bruce Maxwell ready to take his spot. When Bandy stopped hitting completely and Susac not hitting at AAA, the Brewers needed a guy to fill in. He's a perfect fit.
  12. This isn't the same Cub team as 2016 or even 2015. Just look at their starters ERAs: Lester 3.83; Lackey 4.74; Arrieta 4.36; Hendricks 4.09. Montgomery's given them a boost in the short term, but Lackey is 38, Lester is 33, and Arrieta is 31 and Hendricks is on the DL. Could they still pick things up some? Yeah but it's not a given at this point. Other than Davis and Edwards, the pen isn't that imposing. Their outfield mix of Jay, Heyward, and Almora is overall pretty weak with fewer HR combined (9) than Hernan Perez, especially now with Happ needed more in the IF with Zobrist hurt. Russell has a sore shoulder and hasn't hit much either. Baez has just been ok, nothing special and still strikes out a lot. Behind the plate, the league has caught up with Contreras to an extent. Their bench doesn't appear as strong as the Brewers either. Not that they can't get things going but they need a lot to happen that until now hasn't happened.
  13. Focus right now isn't on rebuilding, it's on winning a very winnable division (have you looked at the lineups the Cubs are throwing out there now?) The young talent acquisition phase of the rebuild is on hold while the division there to be won this year. Besides, their entire roster other than Sogard is controllable beyond this year. They are trying to increase the chances this year without surrendering young core and future core talent. This type of move makes sense.
  14. Taking a flier with a waiver claim on a hitter having an off year is one thing. Pitching that can help will cost considerably more.
  15. Vogt was a 3.5 WAR player in 2015, and a 2.2 WAR player in 2016 per B-R as a full time regular. Susac's hitting .147 in AAA. It's hard for me to believe that at 32 Vogt simply cannot play in 2017. His BABIP this year is .244 well below his career .276 BABIP. His K and BB rates are near his career numbers. The Brewers have plenty of money with a very low payroll and he was available for zero cost in talent. It was a move they had to make. I expect similar moves as we go forward.
  16. Aguilar's bat would play almost anywhere but 1B. Not sure he's not a better overall hitter than Thames. Even with Cooper's amazing season, he may not ever get more than a few cups of coffee in the big leagues.
  17. I bet they keep Franklin for now and go back to 12 pitchers. Either Suter or Espino will return to AAA with Brinson to make room for Braun and Villar.
  18. Don't assume Vogt is a backup. I'm guessing Counsell splits his time with Pina in hopes his bat comes alive.
  19. Vogt is a two time All Star. This is a clear upgrade. He's very similar to Montero.
  20. it's gonna cost almost 2 million to do this. They must've liked Vogt for awhile. Chump change for a team with the lowest payroll that's getting a bump in ticket sales.
  21. Burnes has to be in top 10 now doesn't he?
  22. Don't get me started on the topic of sponsorship. Are you telling me they can't sell time to anyone but ambulance chasing law firms? Just what you want to teach your kids. Play the lottery or try and win the lottery with a settlement from a lawsuit.
  23. It won't take a ton to re-sign Sogard, but even if they don't, they have a viable everyday option at 2B in Perez who is still a man without a position. Only trade Sogard if they fall 5-6 games behind a month from now. Certainly not now as he's the man at 2B right now. Both Podsednik and Segura followed up great seasons with mediocre ones and still maintained trade value. Villar is similar though 2B are not in high demand. His value was never that high to begin with. His flaws were apparent even last year.
