  1. Not an excuse but when you work as slow as Guerra does, the defense falls asleep. He needs to pick up the pace.
  2. Lets remember the obvious lesson here. Winning is hard in baseball. Things don't go your way every year. Rosters change. Players get better or get worse. Most rarely stay the same.
  3. For a team to surrender a quality, controllable pitcher, they will demand a useful major league ready arm with a decent ceiling. A ball guys don't fit other than as a secondary piece. To get Gray and certainly Quintana will take either Woodruff or Hader as key piece. Only way one of those two isn't included is if Brinson is in the deal. I don't see that happening.
  4. Won't happen because Mariners are on fringe of Wild Card race now, and likely aren't going for a full rebuild anyway.
  5. Nelson, Davies, Quintana, Garza and Woodruff. Anderson gets back in mid August replacing Garza or Woodruff. Brewers deal Hader, Broxton, and Ray for Quintana. Brinson is in CF. Suter returns to pen to occupy Hader's current role. Don't know how you can take Davies out of the rotation. Yeah, his ERA is high, but he's a 10 game winner, undefeated on the road and the team is 12-6 in his starts and his 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA in his last 3 starts.
  6. Theo Epstein on The Score 5 minutes ago when asked about the Brewers: "They're legitimate....they can put a lethal lineup on the field against both LHP and RHP and they have the ability to add to their rotation....they are getting a lot out of their current rotation with former Cub minor league instructor Derek Johnson."
  7. I think it will take Hader and Ray and a lesser piece to get Quintana. Maybe they'd take Phillips instead of Ray. So far the arms the Sox got in the Sale and Eaton deals have been disappointing. Could the Brewers be making sure Hader is healthy knowing he's their ticket to a deal for a starter with control? His sudden move to the pen and light workload with the Brewers is mysterious. Don Cooper helped Sale become a star for Sox and Hader has similar delivery. I'd much prefer Quintana over Gray. He's a lefty and been more durable.
  8. When all is said and done, I think the guy the Brewers end up with is Edinson Volquez. He won't cost a ton in prospects, has another year on his deal that's not extreme, and provides postseason experience. My guess is Brewers patience with Guerra is limited. If the White Sox think they'll get close to Sale return for Quintana, then they'll be stuck with him for a while. If they relent, he's the guy to go after. Could Hader be the key piece?
  9. 77 RBI for Cooper on July 6. Yes it's Colorado Springs, but that's an amazing total. Almost as amazing is that he nearly has as many extra base hits (44) as strikeouts (46).
  10. Someone needs to introduce them to Corbin Burnes who even got a mention from Peter Gammons on Chicago sports radio this morning as "blowing through the minor league levels" and with the potential according to Gammons to help the Brewers THIS season. Hader 60? Apparently the witness protection system the Brewers have him stashed in is working.
  11. 11 runs with top two HR hitters on the bench. If that doesn't make a statement, what does? Say what you want about Davies, but his mental makeup from day 1 in a Brewer uniform has been something to behold. Bring on the Yankees!
  12. I don't share the venom for Lucroy. Heck ownership was out there proclaiming publicly they weren't trying to win. That wouldn't sit well with me if I were a veteran player either. Two moves made by Stearns (Shaw and Thames acquisitions) changed the entire equation and a few others turned to gold as well and the Cubs proved to be mortal. If Lucroy's out there in FA, he's worth considering but for far less than he'd have anticipated a year ago. You can never have too many good players and Pina just might be a one year wonder. That decision's a long, long way off though.
  13. It's a mistake to assume that because this team is ahead of schedule that they shouldn't do what they can to win this year. Nothing is guaranteed 2, 3, or 4 years down the road. By then the look of the division will be completely different.
  14. I hope he does exactly that. I don't see it. They have strength in numbers at some positions in their system and a guy like Happ could be flipped next year if they fall out of contention. I think he'll pursue any avenue short of the multi-prospect deal that landed Sabathia for just 3 months.. Heck Anderson is a direct result of the Grienke deal.
  15. Can't argue with his numbers. He kind of resurrected his career in the Cub pen and it's carried over as a starter in San Diego. It seems like he's been around forever but he's still just 29. Definitely worth checking on what they'd want in return.
  16. Why wouldn't he be? He's been dealing before the ink was dry on his GM contract. Not only that but they have an opportunity to make the post season. How awesome is that?!? Said earlier in June that they would not be buyers at the deadline... can't find the source now. I think it was more along the lines that they would not abandon the process of building for the future but he never ruled out deals to improve this year's team and the claim of Vogt is.proof of that. It also doesn't preclude him for adding controllable players either. What he won't do is rent guys are the expense of the top prospects.
  17. Happ would be a nice fit. Not a big financial commitment but get one more year. Won't take gutting the system. Toronto's playoff hopes hanging by a string so very likely to be sellers. I can see Stearns pulling the trigger for Happ.
  18. 2 playoff appearances in 35 years. Why not take a shot? The guys that got them in this position despite nobody believing in them deserve a chance to finish the job.
  19. Still no belief in the Brewers in the Chicago media. It's all about the Cubs failures not an exciting young team just 90 miles away. Let them be blissfully ignorant.
  20. He had his 3 bad starts all on the road where he allowed 23 ER. Two of those starts were in April and one in May. In case you haven't noticed there have been a lot of HR hit at Petco this year too. Pads have hit 46 HR at home and their slugging is exactly the same home and road. Their pitchers have allowed nearly same number of HR home and away, 53 vs. 56. Park effects are figured in WAR, and his WAR through have a season is 1.4. This is a guy with a 4.21 career ERA in Coors. I don't think Miller Park would be an issue.
  21. There's some similarities between Suter and Mark Buehrle. Just saying. Buehrle never topped 88 and worked very quickly. Not saying Suter is Buehrle but they just need him to be one time through the league.
  22. Chacin might be the best rental option out there. Last 5 starts: 3-2 with a 2.25 ERA. Anyone speculate what the Pads would want? He's a FA after this year so they can't be too demanding. Would fit nicely with the Latin contingent on the Brewers.
  23. It isn't just salary that would make Quintana cost more in prospects. It's also because he's a better pitcher with way more upside. You're right, starting pitching is expensive. In Samardzija's case, it's about $20M a year expensive, he isn't a substantial upgrade from anyone in our full healthy 5 man rotation, and in 1-2 years we will be bemoaning why we have to save a rotation spot for a mediocre aging starter because we're paying him $20M a year when we have guys like Burnes and Ortiz waiting in the wings . We also have the 8th ranked rotation in the bigs . Why pay an expensive price for something you don't even need? If it's a substantial ace upgrade, that's a different conversation, but this doesn't even make us much better. You wouldn't give Garza a $20M a year extension right now, would you? Is there really a major difference between Samardzija and Garza? There's cheaper options out there as rentals who are better than the bottom of the rotation. Jhoulys Chacin looked very good against Brewers earlier this year and his numbers very similar overall to the Shark. Might cost a Phillips but won't gut the system.
  24. Very well said. Take the training wheels off this kid Craig. The guys in the clubhouse know how good he is. I don't think any would take offense if they are moved down to move Arcia up.
