  1. Where is this notion that Davis doesn't hit RHP well coming from? He had 16 HR, 28 doubles , and 2 triples against RHP in 2014. He had 18 HR in games started by a RH. 47 of his 60 RBI came while hitting of RHP. In 2013, he had an OPS vs. RHP of .918. LF is a position where you expect power. It's one thing if you are getting power in positions that aren't power positions, but with an aging Ramirez, the power is already down at 3B, and at SS and 2B, they only have modest power. Parra's nice insurance as a 4th OF and he's certainly an excellent guy to plug in late in games for defense. But he's not productive enough to play in a strict platoon. Parra had an OPS of .703 against RHP last year. I'll stick with Davis.
  2. Blazek is 4 years younger than Wooten and that's why I think it's 50-50 between the two. wooten can be optioned back and forth in 2015 and 2016. blazek can only be optioned back and forth in 2015. Wooten probably has a slightly better chance of seeing time at the major league level this year than Blazek though it's not like he's essential. That may salvage his spot more so than the extra option year.
  3. I thought I read somewhere that within the industry they expect another huge windfall when the next national tv deal is done and that's helping fuel the mega deals and that would explain the Brewers deferring money in deals. In this low interest rate/low inflation environment, the time value of money angle is fairly minimal. In the 1970's when inflation and interest rates were double digits, it was a huge factor. Not so much these days.
  4. Ramirez doubts his own ability to continue play at a high level. From July 1st on last year he had 79 hits, 61 of which were singles and that's your cleanup hitter? Some of the rationalizing by fans is simply amazing. Athletes know when their bodies won't let them do the things they once took for granted. Ramirez is at that point. He's probably almost embarrassed to be collecting enormous paychecks so announcing his likely plans know eases that some.
  5. Actually, I had just the opposite reaction. I was hoping he had decided to hang it up now and forego $14 million as I'm not expecting much from him this year.
  6. I think you might want to clarify that he's retiring after this season, not now. I think he knew as he struggled down the stretch last year that it was time. It's very similar to what happened to Paul Konerko. But the Brewers decided they couldn't resist giving him an extra $10 million to play this year and he's no fool. Glad it's out in the open. Expecting much from his farewell season is foolish. He's had a fine career but he's got a ton of mileage on that body of his so he's an old 36.
  7. I see Parra as strictly an expensive insurance policy and defensive replacement. He can play all 3 OF spots and should any of the 3 starters go down, it's nice to have a veteran like Parra to take over. Fans talk about Gennett's inability to hit lefties but Parra was 1 for 17 against LH relievers last year. For his career he's 7 for 50 against lefty relievers. His overall numbers vs. lefties don't look so bad compared to Gennett because a much greater percentage of his AB's vs. lefties were against staring LH pitching who tend to not be as tough on lefty hitters. With Gennett starting against most LHP, I think you'll see his overall numbers vs. lefties improve quite noticeably. My real worry about the bench is that they lack a proven experienced RH bat to come up and hit for Gennett or Lind late in games against the tough lefty relief specialists. Now if Jimenez starts seeing a lot of time at 3rd, maybe that's a good role for Ramirez.
  8. Why would they option a guy who in his first 637 major league AB's (about a full season for an everyday player) has 47 doubles, 33 HR and 96 RBI? It's not like this team can't use a power RBI bat in the lineup especially with Ramirez' power diminishing rapidly. They tried that playing Parra thing down the stretch last year. How'd that work out? Parra had all of 8 extra base hits in 123 AB's. As for 5th outfielder, why not Clark? Let Parra back up in CF too. Clark gives them another power threat, something they don't have a lot of on their bench. He hit 1 HR every 11.7 AB's combined in AAA and majors last year. Give him a start in LF once or twice a week if you want to rest Davis and have some real pop from the left side in the lineup for a change with Lind AND Clark. You'd still have Parra for late inning defense.
  9. I'm pretty lukewarm about K-Rod as the closer (I think Henderson if healthy is better), but "below replacement level"? He had a WHIP under 1. As for the idea they are better off using the money for a starter/swingman, you do realize the "long man" in the pen has become a bit of a dinosaur? There's still a few around like former Brewer Carlos Villanueva, but those guys almost never pitch meaningful innings, often sit for a week or 10 days at a time, and as starters are likely worse than the best starters any team has in AAA. Today you rarely see starters not complete at minimum 4 innings even on days where they allow 5-6 runs. To get a quality 6th starter who's a veteran, it'll cost you in the $4-5 million per year range, and all that guy would do on the Brewers would be deny Nelson a spot in the rotation at least until the veteran is exposed come about June. The 2 year thing cuts both ways. I haven't read whether K-Rod got a no-trade clause, but having that second full year, even at $6 million, allows the Brewers the ability to deal him next winter to a team in dire straits for bullpen help should it appear the Brewers have enough depth there.
  10. Blazek is 4 years younger than Wooten and that's why I think it's 50-50 between the two.
  11. I'll guess Blazek or Wooten. Hall has options and that would make him a likely candidate to be claimed. Brewers are pretty thin in starters in upper levels and can't afford to risk losing one via waivers.
  12. The positive besides the contract being modest is that it should make the decision easier to have Thornburg re-establish himself as a starter in AAA rather than hang around in the outdated and rarely used "long man" role. If he's really good there, it gives them a solid replacement in case of injury or ineffectiveness and gives them the option of dealing Lohse at the deadline, even if they are still fairly close.
  13. If that's true, I can certainly live with that. Broxton's $9 million will be gone next year, so they are still saving $3 million in 2016. For those keeping score the bullpen arms in camp with career saves in parentheses: K-Rod (348) Perez (133) Broxton (118) Henderson (31) Cotts (4) Jeffress (1) Smith (1)
  14. Brewers now have relievers in camp with a total of 630 career saves between them. That and what about $8.50 will get you a hot dog and a Pepsi at Miller Park? I suppose it gives Attanasio something to brag about. Unfortunately none of these guys has any trade value right now. Broxton's salary is a bit steep so Brewers would have to kick something in. Henderson's coming off an injury and Perez is here on a look see basis with a minor league contract. Once again the Brewer push out young guys with talent to try and win with veterans. Jeffress and Kintzler are now likely battling for last spot in pen. Maybe both will hang on in Henderson starts year on DL. I suspect Wooten or Blazek will get DFA'd to make room.
  15. looks like it is a 2 year deal with a club option for the 3rd I would hope the Brewers were smart enough to not give him a no-trade clause in exchange for the extra year.
  16. I suspect Angels are already talking to Dodgers about Ethier.
  17. Don't like this move. Attansio is the ultimate meddler who always feels like he has to spend every penny in his budget regardless of need. Hope they can move some relievers at the deadline.
  18. I don't understand all of the Perez love. Perez has a track record of being a mediocre at best reliever. He had one great year several ysars ago with the other years being blah with bad peripherals. IMO, he needs to pitch lights out in the spring or benefit from other guys getting injured to make the team. He's just not very good. Currently, he shouldn't be in the top 7 for the bullpen. He can change that, but past performance suggests otherwise. There is a reason he signed a milb deal. Perez had an injury last year and tried to pitch through it. After a stint on the DL in August, he didn't allow a run after that in 7 appearances. Say what you want but Perez has 133 lifetime saves and a career BA against of .219 (.228 in 2014). Given the up and downs of most reliever's careers, it's certainly not that big a stretch for him to put up solid results, nor would it shock me if at some point he's closing games in a Brewer uniform. He's still only 29.
  19. I don't see Cecchini's value much above that of Luiz Jimenez frankly. Eventually he'll run out of options in Boston. Panda isn't ready to assume a full time DH role anytime soon regardless of how long Ortiz sticks around. Besides, when he does, he'll be replaced by Moncada, not Cecchini. Moncada's not going to unseat either Pedroia or Bogaerts.
  20. Can I remind everyone that Thornburg posted an ERA of 1.47 in 7 major league starts in 2013. All 7 starts qualified as "quality starts". I'll bet there's not many guys out there who currently have a streak of more than 7 quality starts going. I realize a lot of fans sort of "checked out" in the waning weeks of 2013 and weren't watching all that closely. But Thornburg was very impressive.
  21. The wild card on this team is going to either be Jimenez or Rogers but most likely Jimenez. I think he's going to play a lot more than anyone thinks. His AAA numbers: .295/.327/.485 aren't bad though they were accumulated in Salt Lake City, which does favor hitters. I wouldn't count out Rogers completely if he shows he can play adequate 3B. He's done nothing but overachieve relative to his draft position and guys like that can't be dismissed. His multiple remaining options don't work in his favor though.
  22. Ramirez slugged .376 from July 1 on last year and only walked 10 times in that stretch. I'm in the camp that he slumped badly in large part because he's hit the wall. I expect a major dip not a minor one.
  23. Orioles just designated Alex Hassan to make room for Cabrera. Hassan has a nice skill set that could be useful for the Brewers. He's primarily a RF, but he's also played some 1B. He's got a career OBP in the minors of .393. While he doesn't hit a lot of HR, he does hit for some power. He's killed lefties in the minors. Here's his OPS by year vs. lefties: 2014: .902 2013: 1.034 2012: .702 2011: 1.026 2010: .999 2009: 1.172 He's not all that unlike Sean Halton who the Brewers just let be taken in the minor league draft ironically by the Orioles, but he's more patient.
  24. The problem becomes attracting the best GM candidates to a job that not only has financial restrictions but an owner who sees himself as "super" GM. It's not like it's a secret in the industry that Attanasio is a bit of a meddler.
  25. Murphy vs. lefties career: .212/.290/.417 in 326 PA Gennett has a grand total of 83 PA against lefties. He's 2 for 32 against lefty specialist relievers but vs. lefty starters, Gennett carries a .261/.320/.391 line. A greater percentage of Gennett's AB's against lefties will now be against starters that A. He'll get to see multiple times in a game and B. Who aren't necessarily tough on LH hitters. I think you'll see Gennett get lifted late against the premier lefty specialists, but he'll do well enough against the starters the first 2-3 times through the order.
