  1. I'm not convinced just yet that Davis > Gindl and the Brewers could use that LH power bat in there somewhere if they re-sign Hart or another RH bat to play 1B. But I tend to agree with your point. Gindl reminds me so much of a young Matt Stairs that it's scary and we all know what Stairs produced in his prime.
  2. I'm just not sure Davis' track record is extensive enough to generate serious interest. We're talking about a guy who has 129 major league PA and has never been considered a prime prospect himself. He has value no doubt but prime pitching or corner IF in return? I have my doubts.
  3. Yost has been great at meeting low expectations. Most of his career his teams were not expected to contend and he didn't disappoint.
  4. It's a one sided match. Yankees get what they want. Brewers get minimal at best salary relief and a non entity minor leaguer or two. The Brewers are far better off keeping him going into 2014, then waiting for a market that could include more teams with more to offer in July. If they do happen to contend, all the better still having him. There's really not an heir apparent in the system anyway.
  5. Of course we can, but if guys who haven't played in 2 years (Gamel), or strike out half of their ABs (Fancisco) or a guy who didn't hit well enough at AAA (Morris) to earn a September look, get mentioned as possibilities by the team's beat writer, then Halton, who's done nothing wrong in limited action at least deserves a mention as does Davis who needs a position when Braun returns. I disagree with the statement that "FA is not looking good for 1B". Just the opposite is true. There are plenty of guys who won't be premier FA types (thus won't break the bank) but are far better than what the Brewers have used this year. In addition to Hart, there's Mike Napoli, James Loney, Kendrys Morales, Justin Morneau, and Mike Morse. Any one of those guys is an upgrade.
  6. Sean Halton says hello.
  7. At 23 it's far more likely that he's gassed mentally than physically. The baseball season is a grind. Guys learn over time how to deal with the length of a season. This is Segura's first experience of how much a grind it can be. Success early can add internal pressure too and that wears guys down even faster. Bianchi is a competent backup and he should be playing more. The worst thing is for Segura to go into the offseason on a huge downer.
  8. That was the hope many had going into this year. Then they signed Lohse. They can do both if they stick to signing guys on short term (like 1-2 years tops) deals. Say they signed a Wandy Rodriguez for 2 years, and he pitches well. Either he's going to help them contend, or they'll have yet another guy contenders will covet in July along with Lohse, Estrada, and Gallardo or they could trade one of those 3.
  9. Kazmir and Jimenez are two guys who have intrigue, but both have been good enough this year to attract a fair amount of attention unlike Francisco Liriano last year so neither will be all that cheap. I would expect the Brewers to kick the tires on solid vets coming off of injury. Three names come to mind, Colby Lewis, Wandy Rodriguez, and Scott Baker. All 3 could likely be had on short term deals and all have ceilings as mid rotation starters if healthy. Rodriguez would give them a lefty which they lack. Assuming their healthy, any of those three could be turned into a decent return at the deadline if the Brewers are out of it.
  10. Maybe Dave Nilsson will throw out the first pitch.
  11. Somebody will take him, but just like Bill Hall, they'll wait until he comes at minimum wage. Nobody is going to pay him $11 million or even half of that. Sure the Brewers could offer to pay $8 or $9 million of his salary, and hope somebody bites with something in return but teams knowing that will just wait it out. He's certainly not a difference maker for anyone that they have to have him now. I like everything I've seen of Gennett. Those hung up on his fairly modest minor league numbers conveniently forget he hit around .400 in the AFL a couple years ago. His numbers are over a rather small sample. But he's earned the everyday job for 2014. His future beyond that is yet to be determined.
  12. I think the WBC hurt Gallardo. It also hurt Hiram Burgos. I never was one that believed that pitching a few innings early like that would have that big of an effect but clearly these guys get geared up mentally for it and that affects their preparation for the season. Neither transitioned properly. Gallardo clearly needed a mental break. Once he got it, it's made a world of difference.
  13. No big fan of the way ESPN has covered this, but I agree this is all about PR. Notice how the Brewers themselves played this up? Of course Braun needs positive PR. I don't think the Brewers should trumpet this as some grand gesture though. Braun's motivation is to restore some credibility with fans. Anything he does will be looked at as "self-serving" by most including me. That's never going to end. His career is forever tainted. The only way he can somewhat improve his image is to put together at least a half dozen great years and pass every drug test so that people will see he's a great player with or without help.
  14. I take exception to Dick Davis being on that list. First, Davis was never really a starter. He was a 4th OF, DH and he handled that role very well. He played more in 1980 because Lezcano broke a bone in his hand late in the year. I recall him getting many big hits for very good Brewer teams from 78 to 80. The year he is listed, he had 26 doubles in under 400 AB.
  15. The walks are a concern. Big league hitters will be more patient too. He'll undoubtedly have a learning curve but like Peralta, Hellweg, and Thornburg, he's another guy with a big league arm. When's the last time the Brewers could boast of a foursome of young pitching like that? If somehow 3 of those 4 turn into solid major league starters over the next year or two, that's something to get excited about.
  16. It's funny you should bring up Stairs. When I see Gindl, I see a young Matt Stairs. Stairs wasn't a huge power guy in the minors. That came along in his late 20's.
  17. Your analysis is a good one monty. I still think Weeks will be cut rather than brought back in some bench/part time starter role. Bianchi is a nice backup option in the IF as he can play anywhere, is cheap, and he usually does a good job executing when Roenicke calls for his small ball. Fransisco would allow them to bring back Hart a bit slower, and be able to rest Ramirez. His defense is worrisome to be sure though. Rather than worrying about players bouncing back, I'm more concerned with guys that have stepped up this year regressing some with higher expectations next year. I think they can afford the journeyman type starter by not having to pay Axford and Gonzalez and paying considerably less for Hart. As we've seen from recent Cub signings, those journeymen starters can have value at the trade deadline too.
  18. Melvin has always looked to get a young arm back in any deal, so my guess is it's more than likely a pitcher.
  19. I'd love it if they could address a need but not likely for a one month rental. The aptly named lefty bullpen prospect Lee Stoppelman would be a nice get.
  20. 5-4 in the last 9 against the top teams in the division. 4 of 6 on the road against the Reds and Pirates. Two rookies have made their mark replacing Braun and Weeks. They had breakout players in place at SS, CF, and C. There's a lot to like about this team. Last year it was bullpen woes early. This year it was slow starts and injuries in the rotation, along with no contribution at all from a former All Star 2nd baseman both years that's put them in holes too deep to climb out of. They have to find a way to start stronger next year.

They had breakout players in place at SS, CF, and C. There's a lot to like about this team. The last couple years it's been a combination of slow starts, injuries, and a miscalculation on personnel in the rotation, along with no contribution at all from a former All Star 2nd baseman, that's put them in holes too deep to climb out of. They have to find a way to start stronger next year.
  22. Badenhop is another guy who could be non-tendered. He's not awful, but he's a dime-a-dozen type that's easily replaceable.

  24. Despite his power surge that temporarily boosted his OPS over .800, I just don't see the Brewers giving the 1B job back to "Fansisco". It's not just the strikeouts. He can't hit lefties at all, so he would need a RH platoon partner. His defense means that he'd be routinely taken out of games in the 7th or 8th innings. Whether he could be that LH power bat off the bench I'm not sure. I don't know if he needs regular AB's to be productive even to his level. There's also the fact that there are many other options. Hart, Braun, maybe though doubtful Gamel, and a fairly decent 1B FA crop.
  25. Other than Nelson and Richardson, I don't see any must adds or guys that would be in great demand as Rule 5 guys. If there's room, sure add Morris and maybe Heckathorn or Kentrail Davis. I'm not worried about needing Prince as infield depth. There's any number of better middle infielders that will be cheap and available. I'd remove Olmsted, Manzanillo, Lalli, Gamel and Prince. I'd non tender Axford and Francisco if they sign another 1B.
