  1. I'd wouldn't make that deal. Gomez is contributing plenty on offense and his potential for more is still quite high. He could be in CF for the next 5 years. Cain is the RF of the future. He's got the strong arm to play there. The dropoff in CF from Gomez to Gerut is huge. "if Gamel fizzles out"? He's got to get there first. You're assuming McGehee moves to 1B? That's a huge assumption as if they deal Fielder, the return is likely to be one pitching prospect and one 1B prospect.
  2. Guys with great speed sometimes evoke the comment from a coach that "I'd like to see one bunt attempt per game from you." They really don't mean that literally, but Gomez in particular seems to think they did. The problem is that scouts see this, and it can be defended no matter how fast you are, especially if you limit yourself to bunting down the 3rd base line. He's laid down some beautiful bunts, only to be thrown out with relative ease. The best bunt for a base hit is the one that is pushed past the pitcher toward 2nd base. But very few guys are adept at that time after time. Juan Pierre comes to mind, but he's got the advantage of being lefthanded. Gomez needs to shelve the bunt attempts until the 3rd basemen start moving back a little.
  3. I'm starting to take notice of Shawn Zarraga and wondering why he's getting so few opportunities to catch (he's being used mostly as DH). You would think a 21 year old catcher in high A ball with some offensive skills and a body (6'2" 215) to develop some power would be on the radar and they'd want to develop him.
  4. Injuries aren't handcuffing them. Bad roster moves are. It's one thing to have 1 pitcher that only pitches in mopup situations. The Brewers have 2 and for a few games, they had 3. They also haven't had a righthanded bat on their bench all year. That wasn't so bad when they were rotating Edmonds between CF and RF, but now with Gomez healthy and Hart hitting, they start virtually every game with a short and completely lefthanded bench. They need to fix things by dropping at least one pitcher. They should either deal for a RH bat or roll the dice and bring up Heether. Sure Heether's numbers aren't impressive, but he's on the 40 man, hits right handed and isn't a catcher.
  5. Zaun's signing was another head scratcher in the first place, especially coming after they picked up Kottaras and before they waived Rivera. I'm still not sure why they thought it was a good idea to bring in a 39 year old as anything more than a guy who split time equally. When they said he would catch around 100 or 110 games, I thought they were nuts especially since it's only been a few years since they witnessed Damian Miller break down at age 37. There were other, younger guys out there that signed for close to what they gave Zaun. Look at what John Buck is doing for Toronto. He signed a one year deal for $2 million. He doesn't turn 30 until July.
  6. Yeah, but only because Ellsbury is still not completely healthy. I think you'll see him DFA'd within the next few days unless Ells goes back on the DL because the Sox usually carry 13 pitchers. It seems that you guys are right about him hitting well off lefties (limited SS I'm sure) so he could definitely be a decent platoon option. Lucky for Bill Hall, the Red Sox don't have another extra middle infielder or he'd be a definite DFA candidate. A guy like McDonald is much more valuable in the NL.
  7. When Villanueva came up back in 2006 and 2007 his fastball was 90-92. With all the back and forth and relief appearances in 08 and 09 it dropped to around 88. There were reports he worked very hard this offseason dropping about 20 pounds. I think that has more to do with it being back up to 90-91. It doesn't make a ton of difference because it's still pretty straight and he needs to locate it to be effective. But it does give him the ability to go inside a little more with it and free up that outside edge.
  8. I'd like to see them pick up Mike Rivera from the Dodgers to provide them with some insurance at AAA. Dodgers don't seem to need him. They have him playing at AA.
  9. You're forgetting Estrada who right now I'd take over 3 of the guys you listed.
  10. Great point Invader3K. Bush certainly can't be in their plans past this season. Even in his better starts, he's walking a tightrope and running up pitch counts. So if Davis returns, it may be at his expense.
  11. Your scenario to keep Loe and Capuano has some flaws. They are at 13 pitchers now with 3 on the DL. That's 16 total. Cutting Suppan and Vargas gets them down to 14 and frees up spots on the 40 man. But with those two gone, they should be able to get back to the normal level of 12 pitchers once Edmonds comes off the DL. So even without Loe and Capuano, that's 2 more than they need assuming Riske, Davis, and Hawkins all return to the active roster at some point. Sure they could return both Estrada and Braddock to AAA, but what if they keep pitching well?
  12. Macha's been handcuffed late in games by lack of RH bats on bench. Opposing managers have had an extremely easy time lining up their lefties forcing Macha to counter with Counsell and Gerut against them. McDonald's raked vs LHP the last 2 seasons at the major league level. His career AAA numbers are skewed by many years of mediocre performance. He picked it up considerably in 2009 and 2010. It's moot anyway. Sox decided to DFA Scott Atchison instead.
  13. "doesn't have the bat to play the corners" Brewers need a RH guy to come up late in games and face lefties. That would be his primary role. Seems to me he possesses enough of a bat to fill that role better than Gerut or Edmonds. He did extremely well in that role for Reds last year, hitting .365/.421/.500 vs. southpaws.
  14. Well, he started 22 games in CF this year for the Red Sox. His sample size is rather small, but he's played all 3 OF positions in the minors. He did have 4 OF assists. My guess is he's probably below average but serviceable in center and quite adequate in the corners.
  15. The Red Sox just DFA'd Darnell McDonald (.263/.320/.400 in 95 ABs). Seems to me the righty hitting McDonald would balance out the lefty dominated Brewer bench. Against lefties, he's hitting .333/.385/.639 in 36 AB's.
  16. If Melvin thinks Peterson can find a flaw that caused his sudden reversal it might be worth a shot. I'd at least have Peterson look at some Eveland tape. Of course that would mean waiving a certain veteran.
  17. The same guy who twice this season has pitched 7 shutout innings. Had he done that with the Brewers, he would have gotten a 3 year contract. Unlike the Brewers who can't seem to part with struggling pitchers, the Blue Jays don't tolerate 3 bad starts in a row.
  18. Because Capuano has a chance of getting someone out.Really, sentiment aside, it was thought Davis had a chance of getting people out too. Capuano was struggling before he got hurt and that was 2007. It's 2010. If they're completely out of it on August 1st, and you want to take a look at Capuano for a couple months that's fine. Personally, I'd rather take long looks at guys like Estrada and Rivas, than another recycled soft tosser but I can see giving Capuano an opportunity since they've invested this much time in waiting on him to recover. My point is they have guys up now to replace Suppan. Capuano for Davis down the road. Yeah, that makes some sense.
  19. Why do you want to replace one soft tosser (Suppan) with another (Capuano)? and one failed reliever in Vargas with another in McClung? The future is here now and it's named Estrada, Braddock and Axford.
  20. Stats don't tell you anything about situational hitting. Morneau is as good a situational hitter as anyone in the game at any position. Saturday's game is a perfect example. Down 1 run, leading off the bottom of the 9th, Fielder and Howard are thinking one thing: home run to tie the game. A smart pitcher that commands his pitches can use that to his advantage. Morneau, on the other hand is thinking about the best way to hit safely against the pitcher. He knows Villanueva doesn't want to surrender a HR and therefore is likely to work away. McGehee is off the line by a considerable amount, because the "spray charts" say Morneau is a pull hitter. Well he may be a pull hitter on cumulative charts, but in that situation, he will defy the charts. Villanueva commands his location down and away, Morneau goes right with for a double right down the left field line. That and Gerut's limited range, stole that game from the Brewers.
  21. Once again I am astounded by Brewer management. Last night Schroeder said Kottaras would be doing nearly all the catching because the Brewers "don't think Lucroy is ready"??? Ready for what? Success? All Star status? This is the same team that trots out over the hill players that can't compete and they're worried about one of their top prospects who has 271 games behind the plate not being ready to play a couple games a week? Sure in a perfect world, you'd like to see a couple more months at AAA, but 90% of all players get called up initially ahead of schedule due to injury. If they truly believe he's not ready, go out and get a veteran somewhere and let Lucroy play everyday at AAA.
  22. Estrada didn't throw too much in the game. As for Rivas, he's on the 40 man and it's his day to pitch. His name's not Suppan.
  23. Look it's hard to not like a guy that competes hard and Bush competes hard. But he walks a very fine line every time out. Everyone forgets, he's a FA after this year. I don't think he'll be back.
  24. It's actually kind of laughable that Capuano has an out clause. Which of the other 29 teams is desperate enough to take him on their major league roster right now? Answer: none.
  25. What a lame excuse. Are you telling me they won't DFA a pitcher carrying an ERA over 8 on the 21st of May? They have 13 pitchers on the roster, but in reality, they have 10, since 3 guys aren't trusted to pitch in close games. Melvin and this bunch need to go.
