  1. So many people bought tickets before the season that by June they'll be unloading them for well under face value! Seriously, it would be nice to see what the offense would look like if the 3-4-5 hitters actually started hitting before guys like Hart, Hall, Cameron and Weeks cool off. For some reason this team allows seems to rest after getting 4-5 runs. That's not enough with this pitching staff.
  2. Once again Carlos Corporan earns the title of "most under appreciated player in Brewer system". Here's hoping Carlos forces a September callup and a spot on the 40 man by raking in his 2 starts a week at Nashville.
  3. Sounds like the dreaded inter-costal/oblique/side injury that's the new rage. There's got to be something with present day training methods that somehow weaken this area and make it vulnerable.
  4. How about Carlos Corporan getting in the top 50 for once? He's made it through every level in the organization. He had a solid showing in major league camp. He helped made Lou Palimassano expendable. He's still only 25. Yet I don't remember him ever making this list despite his outlasting dozens of guys (including catchers) who have.
  5. The Gameday illustration had one of his three outs beyond the wall.
  6. The pitching staff he is "handling" is walking everyone and giving up over 6 runs a game with the genius Kendall behind the plate. He's thrown out 1 base stealer in 8 attempts. I understand he's a great teammate and all and he's a very hard worker. All that's great, but sooner or later everyone has to produce.
  7. He's going to have to rally to get to those numbers. He's just not hitting period. His outs are weak ground balls or pop ups. A couple of his hits have been of the infield variety or bleeders just through the infield. He's fanned 8 times in 30 AB's That's a rate of 160 in 600 AB's and isn't good. The good news is he's too good a hitter to keep this up, but as long as he does, this team will have trouble winning games.
  8. It's way too early to say "he also continues to make errors" because he's made 2 in 4 games. Escobar made 2 in one game. They aren't going to move him off 3B based on 4 games. Remember his error total came down significantly from 07 to 08. He's going to get a full season at Nashville. I think he'll be okay working with Money.
  9. I tend to agree with Ender's point that a week of games doesn't reveal much. However we do know that Macha's decision to start Suppan in the opener that also resulted in Gallardo missing the Cub series was a mistake. That confirms what most of us thought a month ago. My other impressions of the first week: Kendall's done nothing to allay my fears (which I've expressed often) is that he's done as a hitter. He's hit one ball hard in 5 games. I suspect at some point he'll get a hit or two, but he's a .220 hitter now with no power. That I have to watch him 140 or so more games is discouraging. Duffy may be no upgrade at all from Gwynn. All spring numbers need to be taken in context. This was a guy who the Pirates gave up on. That says a lot right there. At best, he's a marginal 5th outfielder. Counsell's looked as good up there as I've seen him in a Brewer uniform. Weeks had a nice first week. That talk about Randolph helping him and what they've worked on in hitting may actually mean something. I still think Jon Garland would have been a much better signing than Braden Looper. Nothing that's happened so far has changed my mind on that. Macha has a very slow hook. He didn't get burned too bad by leaving Bush in the other night, but we all know that Bush looses it quick and needs to get out of there when he does. The bullpen would look a lot better with Juan Cruz in it.
  10. Positive spin: Based on last night, Gamel is the equal of Craig Counsell defensively.
  11. In looking at the BF roster page, it lists Riske as having 1 option left. I believe he would have to okay it because of his status as a veteran, but considering how he knows he needs work, maybe he would okay being optioned.
  12. Often referred to as Eddie by Ueck, he was one of my favorites and one of Ueck's as well. Eddie was extremely versatile. He could close (32 career saves, 126 games finished), he could throw multiple innings out of the pen which he often did, and he was used as a spot starter. He had some of the best stuff on those staffs. He deserved to be in the rotation but was so valuable out of the pen and spot starting. His career highlight came on May 22, 1977 in the second game of a doubleheader at Boston. The Brewers had blown a 10-7 lead in the 8th inning of the opener when the Red Sox erupted for 7 runs in the 8th in a typically wild Fenway game. After that 14 run, 15 hit Boston onslaught, Eddie Rodriguez stopped them cold in the 2nd game tossing a complete game 2 hit shutout, fanning 8. By the way, that was his first start of that year. Sad to see him go.
  13. In a terribly shocking and sad story, Angel pitcher Nick Adenhart was reportedly killed by a hit and run driver on the way home from last night's game in which he had just pitched 6 scoreless innings. Adenhart's car was hit broadside by a minivan that had run a red light. Adenhart was just 22. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, teammates, and the Angel organization. What a terrible way to start the season. Edit: LINK TO STORY
  14. 25 wins combined from your top 2 starters translates to about 75 wins for the team. It's just not enough. They need 32 wins combined with something like 18 for Gallardo and 14 for Parra to have any playoff hope. I think they fall just a bit short at 29, 17 for Gallardo and 12 for Parra.
  15. I'm actually just as concerned with Looper as I am with Suppan. I think either would have to be still hovering around a 6 ERA in mid June before any move is made. I disagree with the notion that they wouldn't give DeFelice a shot at some point as an alternative. He gave a good impression this spring. I think they will closely be monitoring Wright down at Nashville too. I expect Suppan to throw in the occasional 6 inning, 2 run, start that will keep him in the rotation most if not all year. But the days where he's going to be a .500 pitcher may be gone. His bad outings are just to frequent and he doesn't seem as capable of minimizing the damage. Speaking of leashes, how long before we start discussing the leash on Kendall especially if Salome is tearing up AAA? Too early to tell but as many know on here, my confidence in Jason is rather low and this team looks like it needs offense everywhere to help the pitching staff.
  16. BA shows that Adam Frost (St. Norbert, Sobieski, WI) was released by the Tigers. Frost was drafted last year in 21st round. Talk about not getting a shot. 141 total AB's. True he didn't dominate at low level Gulf Coast League but he wasn't awful (.277/.328/.402) either and that was in just 112 AB. Then when they needed a fill in at High A Lakeland, Frost more than held his own (.241/.313/.586) with 2 HR in just 9 games. Hope he catches on elsewhere or tears up an indy league somewhere.
  17. If the Brewers need a starter in July, there should be enough on the market to get it done. Who they are depends on which teams drop out of the race. Guys like Washburn, Doug Davis and Jose Contreras are all in final years of deals and shouldn't require all that much in return. Of course none of those guys would figure to have much impact either.
  18. Gillespie is doing the DH thing at Brevard County until he can play the field. Correct. Kudos to Rottino for being willing to go down to AA. I hope he at least gets another look on the major-league roster in September. The reality is Rottino turns 29 tomorrow and the chances he appears in another major league game are slim. It's great that he still has the desire to play and that the Brewers had a place for him to play. My guess is that in 2010, he's the marquee player on the new Northern League team in Zion, IL, about 20 minutes from Racine.
  19. Steals: These teams should be over: AL: Royals, White Sox, Rangers NL: Nationals, Astros, Rockies These teams should be under: AL: Bluejays, Tigers, Athletics. I defy anyone to name the 3-5 starters for the Bluejays. If they deal Holliday, they'll lose 100 games in that division. Sorry but any team with Lyle Overrated as the regular 1B isn't very good. NL: Marlins, Diamondbacks I just don't believe in the Marlins magic this year. They gave up their number 3 starter (Olsen), their starting LF (Willingham) and their closer (Gregg) and got virtually nothing in return. Unless Maybin is an All Star right out of the box, they'll struggle in that division. If I had to bet the Brewers, I'd take the over.
  20. Believe me a lot of Cub fans I know agree with Zambrano. While most enjoy the atmosphere around Wrigley, the place itself is a dump and a relic of the first half of the 20th Century. It's one reason so many flock to Miller Park so they can actually watch a baseball game with 21st Century amenities.
  21. There's been some big contracts eaten this spring. It might be a bit premature for the Brewers to eat the $9 million left on Riske's contract, but assuming everyone's healthy, who do you drop from the roster when Hoffman comes back? If Julio, DeFelice, Coffey, McClung etc, are all performing well and Riske's not, maybe they have to consider it. After all, if a minimum wage guy like Difelice is giving you $4.5 million worth of performance, isn't that the goal anyway? Meanwhile if they are concerned about maintaining depth, we know they didn't burn the bridge with Gagne and vice versa. Now that the seasons here, the spring stuff all goes away. But Riske has to use his opportunities to show he's the pitcher they gave that contract to.
  22. Guess this means bye-bye to Thorman. With Koshansky on the 40 man, what are the odds he comes up to do some DHing in the AL parks? He might present even more upside than Nelson in that role considering he'd be seeing regular time in Nashville.
  23. That game was televised on my satellite package. I remember the play you are referring to. The Texas telecast replayed that hit. Hall was shading toward the hole on that play and couldn't have flagged that one down with a broom not could any 3rd baseman alive or dead.
  24. Cameron is 36, not 26. He'll benefit from days off. Duffy, like all the reserves will need some playing time.
  25. Why would Melvin regret not signing Branyan? McGehee probably would have beat him out too. Melvin picked up McGehee in October for a reason. I don't think he's all that surprised he made the team.
