  1. Okay, let me preface this by saying I was at the game. I would not assume it was Hardy he was yelling at. If he was yelling at Hardy he was yelling at the wrong guy. On the play in question, had JJ fielded the ball cleanly he had one chance to get an out on that play. Where? At third base that's where. But Braun failed to take into account the situation and instead of covering third, he ranged to his left, leaving JJ no play anywhere even if he fielded it cleanly. JJ took his eye off the ball to see where Braun was and he missed it. Rookie or not, Braun has to be aware when there is a force at third and the SS is cheating toward the hole like Hardy was. Braun should have been covering third.
  2. "Yost pulled the right strings all night" While it seemed that way, I thought he made one huge mistake that cost them one run and could have cost them the game. With a 1-0 lead and one out in the 6th inning, David Wright batting with a runner on third and the third time throught the order for Suppan, he played the infield up. I think at that point of the game with the heart of the order batting your priority has to be preventing the big inning. Wright ended up singling, on a routine grounder that snuck through. He would have been out with the infield back. Wright ended up scoring that inning, and except for the slow footed Delgado and a nice relay from Graffy, more runs could have scored that inning.
  3. I don't think Dessens will be traded. As I posted in the Wise thread, I think Wise will be DL'd. Not only could he not find the strike zone last night, he wasn't even close and his pitch speeds: 83 77 75 83 78 76 76 87 75 75, indicate he couldn't get loose. He's normally 86-89 with his fastball and 78-81 with his change.
  4. Brewer website has Capuano going Thursday, Gallardo on Friday, Suppan Saturday, and Bush Sunday.
  5. There were two games in June, one just before the no-hitter when Jenkins blasted a 3 run shot that salvaged the final game of that very, very, frustrating series in Texas, then the win against the Tigers on Hall's two run shot. Those two late wins did propel them into a nice stretch. Well, the offensive heroes last night were Hall and Jenkins. Love em or hate em, those two guys usually do something when enough is enough. I had that feeling that either would be the guy to step up last night.
  6. When Linebrink returns, I predict Wise will suddenly develop tendinitis in his shoulder.
  7. Dillon fills the need for a right handed bench bat that is needed because Graffanino will play most of the time at 2B. Looks like they intend to go with 13 pitchers a while longer.
  8. While we like to think of a lot of guys make up the "core" in reality there's the "core" and then there's the "Core" with the latter being just 3 guys, Fielder, Gallardo, and Braun.
  9. "When has Francisco Cordero...Turnbow...Wise...or Villanueva?" You just made my point Stevo. Have you watched that group recently? Their collars are about 3 sizes smaller than they were in June. The attraction of Gagne is that he's pitched in big situations and that is what the Brewer pen lacks.
  10. While I would have loved to have Gagne, I'm not sold on Chad Cordero. When has he ever pitched in a pennant race? Besides the bullpen, the other glaring weakness is at 2B and I think people are overrating the ability of Graffanino and Counsell to solve the problem there without creating another hole on the bench. I'd be all over the Royals trying to get Mark Grudzielanek and/or Reggie Sanders.
  11. Less than zero. If they could get his clone in a deal, they would.
  12. He'll also miss the Cub series unfortunately. Victorino looks like he's headed to the DL for the Phillies also. He's scheduled for an MRI today.
  13. I'd give them Turnbow and a lesser prospect in a heartbeat. I'd still like to add an OF bat that would free up a two month return to infield for Hall.
  14. Torii Hunter isn't just any player. He's having a good season and his being in CF would allow the 2B issue to be settled for the rest of the year by putting Hall there. His insertion into the lineup would be a huge, huge statement. Yes Parra is a high price, but consider too that Hunter will also bring back compensation picks if he signs elsewhere and who knows maybe the Brewers would make a run at keeping him.
  15. I've been following St. Norbert infielder Adam Frost. The third team D3 All-American from tiny Sobieski, WI, is playing for the home town Green Bay Bullfrogs in the Northwoods League and doing just fine thank you. After a slow start, he now batting .307 (third on the team) and holding his own against top collegiate pitching.
  16. While I'd much prefer to offer the Twins Capuano and Gwynn, I'd make that deal too but only if it meant Hall moves to 2B at least for the balance of this season.
  17. I had to take vacation time when my wife gave birth. These guys can afford multiple nannys. Old School Alert: Back in the day, players took no time off for the births of their children. Don't these guys get from October to mid February to be home?
  18. "So far Hardy's range has been above average" If that's true, how do explain his RF of 3.72 being the lowest among all regular shortstops in baseball and only higher than part timers Loretta and Izturis who have started at least 20 games there?
  19. "I don't see this as a problem for this season". It may already have been. Those balls hit off of Cordero and Turnbow for the most part weren't rockets. Some were very well placed to be sure but a couple Hardy dove for and missed. I do know we can't expect Turnbow and Cordero to strike everyone out.
  20. Over this tough stretch, there have been a number of key hits that have just eluded Hardy. Now range has never been JJ's strong suit, but is it me or has his range decreased this year following his foot/ankle surgery? In checking Range Factor Stats (a somewhat dubious stat admitedly) of the 20 guys in the NL who have started at least 20 games at short, Hardy is ranked 18th, ahead of (barely) Cesar Izturis and also barely ahead of Mark Loretta. If that's all the range JJ has at age 24, what are his long term prospects as a shortstop?
  21. There are still 13 pitchers on the roster which is one too many. Both Gwynn and Gross have cannot be brought back up until 10 days after they were sent down (except to replace an injured player). When Linebrink comes back from his parental leave, Gross should be able to be brought back. As for Weeks, I'd send him down and replace him with Callix Crabbe. Crabbe deserves a shot. He's the equivalent of Gwynn offensively with more power. Defensively, he covers ground and has made just 4 errors all year. Counsell and Graffanino are fine as backups and role players. Having to start either on an everyday basis weakens the bench.
  22. This team needs new leadership. It's not that Yost is a terrible manager (he's not) but it almost never happens for a franchise which has lost for some time under one manager to be able to completely turn it around under the same manager even when the talent has been significantly upgraded. It just doesn't happen.
  23. Before someone beats me to it. Can he still pitch?
  24. Cordero hasn't been the same since blowing that 3 run lead in Texas with 2 out and nobody on. Just like in 06, only the name has been changed to protect the innocent. Offense could have helped out. One hit in final 6 innings isn't getting it done either but if your closer coughs it up twice in two games, you have a huge problem. Oh but according to Johnny Estrada, we fans shouldn't panic.
  25. Before we get too gleeful after last night, let's remember who they were facing. Mike Maroth is horrible and the guys that followed him are not much better. Good approaches against guys like that are going to get rewarded but against good pitching sometimes the right approach doesn't work right away. That's where being patient comes in. Yes I'm glad Skaalen appeared to get them to follow his direction but where has this been the last month?
