  1. Mark Attanasio is a Pollyanna. Plain and simple. Doug Melvin's future is tied into Yost because Yost is "his guy". There are no managers being scrutinized on a daily basis like Yost for one simple reason: There are no managers that continue to be befuddled on an almost daily basis like Yost does in managing a game. I've lost all hope in a change this year, so I've just decided to hope against hope that talent will supercede the deficiency in leadership and they will somehow sneak in. Meanwhile, at least now there is football to distract me somewhat.
  2. "the infield was playing in" Almost all squeezes are executed with the infield in.
  3. Yost added some new twists to his failures today. He never should have made two defensive changes in the 8th once he had to replace Jenkins early in the game (is Gross that bad that Mench is that big of an upgrade?). He had nothing but two AAA callups and sore catcher left if he needed a bat (which he did). Sure Rottino came close to the hit, but honestly was he the guy we wanted up there? No way you can use Aquino there instead of Cordero. Anyone else notice how Yost was beaming in the dougout after one of his moves (bunting with JJ) worked in the 7th? By the way, why not have Hardy squeeze in the tying run in the 8th? I never even saw him look for a sign.
  4. "None of our SP's are walking" That's debatable as is Cordero's situation. He could be back. Capuano and Vargas are no locks to be around next year, whether they're non tendered or traded, I can't see either with even a tentative rotation spot. At best they go to SP as longshot (7-8th options) starters or bullpen arms. That being said, I don't see a huge turnover in personel either. I think Jenkins stays, because with the collapse of Capuano and Vargas, I don't see a trading chip good enough to secure his replacement. If Jenkins does go, it will be to free cash to extend Sheets or sign Cordero, then Gross takes over his platoon spot.
  5. "not even close". It might turn out to be the worst ever, if by chance both Inman and Garrison turn into good major league pitchers. Of course we won't know that for 4-5 years. Think Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz only instead of Alexander going 9-0 for Detroit in 87, he goes 2-7. Heck, even Larry Andersen pitched well for the Red Sox after they traded Bagwell to get him in a deal often cited as an historically bad deal. By the way has anyone noticed Grant Balfour has allowed 1 earned run in 8 1/3 innings this month with 11 K's?
  6. "Now a guy has a couple of bad games and we call it the worst deal ever". That's because Linebrink was brought in to provide two months of solid late inning relief. Period. One month gone, and he's not done that. Two solid pitching prospects for this? It's a bad deal even if he pitches well in September. They didn't give up what they did for one bad month and one good month. If he's as bad in September as he's been in August, it might be the worst deal ever.
  7. Don't the Brewers lose a ton of games in Florida in the summer? Davego, Kane County nearly outdraws the D-Rays. This is a down year for them on the field but they are still averaging over 7,000 per game. I doubt anyone is going to abandon that location for some time.
  8. Speaking of the "double blister", isn't anyone else thinking that it was totally preventable had the trainer or Mike Maddux used his head? They send out Ben to throw a "simulated game" on Phoenix afternoon with the temperature of around 110. Here's a guy with a blister history throwing four seamers and hard curves in the heat with no protection on his hand? There's no rule about wearing a small tape or bandage on a finger in a "simulated" game is there?
  9. Brewers will finish 78-84, tied with the Reds for 3rd. Cubs will win it with 85-77 record. Cardinals will be 81-81. I wish it could be different but the Cubs have the pitching edge here and both the Cubs and the Cards have a huge managerial edge.
  10. "If you look at past managers, it seems like they have a lifespan over there of 2-3 years tops" That's because their owner demands results, not excuses and they have the playoff and World Series appearances to attest to the success of his methods. And I love the fact that he sits right behind home plate at every Astro game in Houston.
  11. "His secondary numbers are better than some others" He's in the bottom quarter of OPS against, WHIP, and ERA. That he's micoscopically better than a handful of other equally as bad pitchers is a reason to commit $4 million? Yes that's not a ton of money in today's game but it would make it tough for the Brewers to eat if he started 08 like he's pitched since July of 06. "I don't think Doug cares at all about fans" He better. They pay his salary and if they stop showing up, Attanasio is not going to fire himself. I doubt 10-15 teams would have interest in him at $4 million, especially if they had to give up something to get him. The Brewers just cannot afford to alienate fans by repackaging the same faces of failure year in and year out. That was one huge reason I hated the Counsell signing. To me Counsell represented to a great degree the painful collapse in 04.
  12. How on earth could they sell bringing Capuano back to a fanbase that knows that his failure was number one reason that the 25 year post season drought continues? (Yes I know it wasn't the only reason but had Capuano done even close to expectations, the team plays postseason baseball). Yes, I know they did that with Turnbow last offseason, but that season pales in comparison to this one as far as fan disappointment. Do they honestly think fans who watched this guy struggle since early May are going to buy tickets believing somehow he's going to turn it around? If they continue to tank, selling tickets this winter will require some work. Bringing back the culprits of the 07 demise (Yost, Capuano, Vargas etc.) will not be a good idea. Use the $4 million and get another decent reliever. Capuano is now a reclamation project. Now I'm not against the Brewers going out and getting a reclamation project to compete for a rotation spot, just let it be one we haven't seen stinking up Miller Park in a Brewer uniform already.
  13. Melvin hired Yost. Once he fires him, and selects a new manager, the neck that is on the line is Melvin's. Attanasio is counting cash right now from the windfall that came about as Brewer fans gobbled up tickets expecting a fun drive to the playoffs. What Attanasio hasn't yet realized is that the same fans that have purchased all these tickets are being let down and let down big time. Once he does, he's going to want answers. We really haven't seem Attanasio establish his authority as owner of the team. He needs to at some point because he has to concern himself with selling this product to the fans.
  14. Since I'm now looking ahead to 08, it's been pretty clear that next year's rotation will include 5 of the following 6: Sheets, Suppan, Bush, Gallardo, Villanueva, Parra. Capuano and Vargas will be elsewhere.
  15. On June 28, 1977, the Cubs were 47-22, and led the NL East by 8 1/2 games. They lost their final game of the year to finish 81-81, winding up 20 games behind. On June 28, 2007, the Brewers were 46-32 and led the NL Central by 7 1/2 games. They are now .500. At least the Cubs had good teams in their division.
  16. Who's hotter than Gross right now? He's pretty much carried this team for 10 days, if you can carry a team that's won 3 times in that period. Now what it says about LF in 2008 is really interesting.
  17. And that is right, the Brewers don't have catching to trade. Outside of pitching, catching is their biggest need and has been since BJ Surhoff took off the gear.
  18. Team Canada, Sure Villy was valuable out of the pen. But he would have been much more valuable starting instead of Capuano. Heck, at the end of 06, Villanueva was the 2nd most effective starter they had. There was no reason to take away his spot even with the signing of Suppan. As for who would have done Villy's bullpen job? That could have been addressed in the deal or via free agency. But even before any plans were made to put Villanueva in the pen, Melvin was saying he thought he had enough in the pen. Not only was he wrong about that, he was wrong in thinking he had solid rotation too. As for what happened to Capuano. My theory is that a lot of his prior success was do to his somewhat deceptive motion that to the batter's eye made his 87 mph fastball look faster. As he's been around now for quite a while, hitters have grown accustomed and are now very comfortable up there. Of course last night he could not have put the ball on a tee in a better spot for Bonds. Bonds will be able to hit that pitch at 53 too.
  19. Patrick425, you're not stupid. This "innings limit" stuff is stupid. It's the latest fad that baseball people have come up with to prevent arm injuries (which history has proven can strike no matter what you try to do to prevent them), This strategy is just don't pitch. Isn't that clever? Forget that back in the day a guy like Bert Blyleven threw 275 innings as a 20 year old, then never had a serious arm problem the rest of his career.
  20. "I would let Parra and/or Villanueva start" Who's Parra? Seriously is there anyone on this team just stealing money more than Capuano?
  21. He's better than Matt Wise. I'd take him.
  22. If Melvin tenders an arby offer to Capuano this offseason, he should be fired.
  23. I feared Ned might insert Miller at 1B, but he is the only option as a righthanded pinch hitter. They should have optioned Parra and brought up an extra bat for a couple days. They'll have to option him anyway prior to Sheets start and with Prince shelved, they're a man short. My hunch is we'll see Capuano in his first relief appearance to get through the 6th and 7th.
  24. He'll be 27 next year and coming off a year where he struck out once every 3.34 AB's. He doesn't take many walks either. I can't see any team making him a primary target in a deal. He'll get more major league ABs somewhere as a guy who comes up to fill a spot due to injury, but not much more than that.
  25. On the very same day I saw the obituary for Wild Bill Hagy, the bearded Oriole fan that used to spell out O-R-I-O-L-E-S with his torso. Maybe the team laid down in his honor.
