  1. Did someone say insurance? Need 2 more to get out of range on one blast.
  2. I believe I read in another thread that the Brewers didn't need to add any arms today because except for Villanueva and Wise, the rest of the pen was ready. Right.
  3. Welcome back Billy. We knew it just a matter of time. I felt good just before the home run, when the Tiger feed showed old Gene Lamont in the dougout and he looked worried.
  4. Prediction: Our 2nd best starter (Villanueva) goes back to bullpen after this start.
  5. The guy was filthy, heck it showed 102 on first pitch to Hardy on the Detroit feed. Get em tomorrow. Go Mariners and go Royals.
  6. Geoff Jenkins could play everyday. They don't need to replace Mench. When Jenkins is hitting, he hits enough vs. lefties that with everyone else healthy, they should have a potent enough lineup. Besides, I'd bet if Jenkins is seeing lefties more, it will make righties seem that much easier, and he'll start hitting them better too. Bring up Rottino on Sept 1, and he could fill in a couple times for Jenks down the stretch vs. lefties if need be. Graffanino is another guy I wouldn't be afraid to stick in LF.
  7. How about Chris Oxspring? Last 4 starts: 4-0, 25 IP, 15 H, 3 ER, 32 K, 1.08 ERA. Sure he's 30, but this guy could be useful in Brewer pen at some point throwing like that.
  8. "He's started in 85% of their games". Not by my count. He's started 59 of 61 games (96%) including games at DH, and is third on the team in plate appearences just 15 behind everyday leadoff man Carl Crawford with 255. Graffanino may have started quite a bit in KC, but by my count it was 60 of 97 (62%), which is a lot but a far cry from 96%. My point was also that Wigginton was a full time starter at 3B for the Mets in 03 and half of 04, when he was traded to the Pirates to make room for David Wright. He then started at 3rd the rest of 2004 for Pittsburgh. Now he's a full time player for the D-Rays and Graffanino is not a full time player for the Brewers. The crux is that he is a key element of their lineup and they aren't going to give him away for an older less productive player who's faced mostly LHP this season. As for a "2nd tier" pitching prospect, exactly what is that? I'm sure the D-Rays are looking for pitching prospects that actually have a decent chance to be solid major leaguers and the Brewers don't want to give those guys up just to marginally upgrade their bench. Graffanino has never had 500 AB's in one season (the minimum I would consider an "everyday player", and passed the 400 mark once, in 2006 thanks in large part to Weeks' injury.
  9. Wigginton may not have an everyday position but he's an everyday player for TB as evidenced by 236 AB so far. Graffanino has never been an everyday player and is 5 years older. No way TB would have the slightest interest and the value to the Brewers does not warrant adding a pitcher that would interest them enough either.
  10. I'm usually pretty hard on Yost, but other than that move to bring in Spurling, I thought he managed well the entire series. He saw what I saw after the Friday game, a need to get the veterans in there to steady this team and save for that unreal 9th inning Saturday, they did just that. So to me, Counsel and Graffanino earned some of those rather large salaries. I had no problem bringing in Vargas there either. Why burn up Villanueva when he'll be needed in the Detroit series? Regarding Vargas or Capellan? Well Vargas has been in Brewer rotation. Capellan was in Nashville rotation.
  11. Despite the way it ended, I thought the Brewers played with more purpose last night than I've seen in a while. For that I have to give credit to the veterans that Yost had in the lineup.
  12. You don't get those games back. They hurt worse when you are 5 games up. I've followed Brewer baseball for 37 years. This one ranks right up there with the worst. I was at County Stadium in mid 70's when Brewers led the Orioles 6-0 going to the 9th and the Orioles tied it up in the 9th off of Tom Murphy and won it on 10-6 on a grand slam in the 10th. But that team wasn't going anywhere so it didn't really matter. There was also a game in 78 or 79 where they gave away one late but the details escape me on that one.
  13. Unreal. No this isn't a game you look back on a month. It's a game you look back on a decade, maybe 2. Give Texas credit. Brewers played a solid game. Texas outplayed them. Ump was bad but he was bad for both sides. Bad karma for Cordero there. I was thinking all game he might blow his first save, then Brewers opened up 3-0 lead, get first 2 outs, you figure game over.
  14. Brewers continue to string one bad AB after another. Take hittable pitches. Flail at every thing else.
  15. This should be his lineup for 2 games: Hart LF Gross DH Braun 3B Fielder 1B Hardy SS Jenkins LF Hall CF Estrada C Counsell 2B The third game I'd go: Gwynn CF Hardy SS Braun 3B Fielder 1B Hart RF Jenkins LF Estrada C Gross DH Graffanino 2B Yost has to seperate his lefties. The Rangers LOOGY Wilson is lights out vs. lefties and could be a factor if Yost lines them up.
  16. "They don't have a quality LOOGY" I wouldn't say that. C.J. Wilson's been absolutly unhittable against left handed hitters. Lefties are 3 for 40 off him.
  17. The drafting of LaPorta makes perfect sense. He's odds on to be the opening day LF in 2009. If I had to guess, I'd say they pick up the Jenkins option for 2008 because no alternative (Mench or Gross) has staked a claim to that job. Then Geoff departs. Enter LaPorta. As a senior he's probably as sure a bet as anyone in the draft that he'd be major league ready by 2009 which is a critical year because the Brewers will still have their full allotment of young core players around. I don't know where he will start the year, but I'd bet the ranch that he will end this season in Huntsville.
  18. I don't see Yost getting fired midseason. But if they finish sub .500, with what has been a relatively healthy roster playing a ton of games in a weak division, he should be fired.
  19. Vs. RHP 1. Hart or Gwynn 2. Hardy 3. Fielder 4. Braun 5. Jenkins 6. Hall 7. Estrada 8. Counsell Vs. LHP 1. Hart 2. Hardy 3. Hall 4. Fielder 5. Braun 6. Mench 7. Estrada or Miller 8. Graffanino When Weeks comes back, he bats 7th until he gets it rolling. Estrada/Miller drop to 8th. I believe Hall is ready to explode.
  20. "How many leads have the Brewers lost due to the pen?" It's not just lost leads homer (and there have been 2 in just the past week), but it's close games that have turned into routs. That's happened 3 times in just the past week. You cannot continue to allow innings of 7 runs, 3 runs, and 5 runs, in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings of close games and that's what's happened in the last 3 losses. You give your offense no chance to counter with their own rally. It's one thing to give up a lead. It's another to let the game get completely away from you. Someone mentioned risking losing Spurling who is out of options? Please. We can only hope he's claimed on waivers by someone in the NL Central. And it's not just what the bullpen does, but what it forces Yost to do in keeping starters in there too long to compensate for lack of depth in the pen. As for Wise, in 2006 he allowed an OPS against of .759 including a slugging percentage of .429. While not horrible, it's not exactly top notch for a setup guy. He's okay, but just okay. He isn't the kind of guy who can get you out of a jam with a strikeout too often and he gives up a few too many long flys that end up being caught by some guy from Waukesha.
  21. Four players from Wisconsin colleges received Division III All American honors including the aforementioned Frost. They are: 2nd Team Jordan Zimmerman, P, JR. UW-Stevens Point 3rd Team Jeff Livek, P, SR. Carthage Seth Maier, 1B, SR. UW-Stout Adam Frost, SS, SO. St. Norbert Frost set St. Norbert school records in AB (157), Runs (52), hits (74), doubles (1http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif , total bases (10http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif and stolen bases (27).
  22. "don't really want something like that coming out of our bullpen". Old joke ennder. You prefer Spurling?? Really on nights where any one of the big 3 (Villy, T-Bow, and Coco) in the pen are not available this team has a real hard time winning if the game is closer than 4 runs. Wise is a one trick pony who had one good major league season and several mediocre ones. Shouse is a second rate loogy at the end of an undistiguished career. Capellan used to throw hard but doesn't any more. Spurling is a guy. They need to find help in the pen from somewhere. If Sarfate ever finds a modicum of consistency, mayble he could help, but until they find someone I'm all for at least looking at what they have.
  23. Balfour since May 17: 9 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 13 SO.
  24. It JS article on last night's game Yost correctly points out that "Soriano is an off speed low ball hitter" and that's exactly what Wise threw him. One problem Ned. You know that Soriano is a low ball off speed hitter, and that Wise's best pitch is a changeup down. Did it ever occur to you that Matt wasn't the best choice to bring in right there? There were so many questionable moves last night it's hard to get them in one post. It was so predictable. Bush hasn't gotten through the 7th with a small lead all year yet there he was. Inviting Floyd to knock in the go ahead run by opening up a hole on the left side so big that a 12 hopper could get through, and on and on.
  25. This is what Yost hasn't yet grasped: Johnny Estrada is a good hitter for a catcher. He is not a good hitter for an outfielder, or a 1st baseman, or even a third baseman. Good lineups do not have Johnny Estradas hitting 5th. It's that simple. Bat him 7th or 8th and be done with it. Not only is he hurting the team in that spot, it's taking away from his defensive concentration. By the way, Bob Brenly was critical of Ned Yost's lineup during the Cub telecast last night. He could not understand moving Fielder from 3rd to 4th and replacing him with a rookie in the number 3 spot. As much as I think Braun will be a stud, I think he's got a point. According to Brenly "you have to get Fielder up there as much as possible".
