  1. May turn out to be smart move by Ned. He had to figure Turnbow for an outing like this was coming, so why not it be in a game they are up by 4, instead of a one or two run game.
  2. Regarding the right handed heavy lineup, keep this in mind. Fielder was 4 for 12 vs. Duke last year, with a HR, double and 3 RBI.
  3. He's off to a great start repeating at Brevard (16 for 40). What intrigues me about Corporan is the year to year improvement he's shown in making contact. At Beloit in 04 he fanned once every 3.03 AB. Staying at the same level in 05 at West Virginia, he improved to once every 3.53 times. Then last year at Brevard, he made great strides fanning just once every 6.06 times and this season so far he's fanned only 6 times in 40 AB's while giving indications that he's developing some power with 6 extra base hits so far. For those that have seen him, is he capable of working his way into a prospect status? He's still only 23. EDIT: removed excessive punctuation from subject line -- Brian the Automator
  4. I agree that it's the offseason when he'll be traded. The Mets have the biggest need and they have some real nice young talent to deal, Pelfrey, Milledge, Fernando Martinez, Carlos Gomez, Philip Humber. All of those guys have pretty good upside. Martinez might be the best of the bunch. An 18 year old CF already in AA?
  5. Another errorless game for Braun. Rivera throws out the speedy Carlos Gomez trying to steal. What were the issues about these guys in spring training?
  6. I fully expect this game to get called well before it's scheduled starting time. The storm in the middle of the country is massive One thing for sure, it won't be rescheduled as part of a traditional doubleheader. The Cards sell out virtually their entire season, and that would leave fans with tickets to this game with no way to get a replacement ticket. I'd look for either a day-night doubleheader on the Brewers visit in July or a makeup on a mutual off day though the latter may be subject to one team or other waiving the rule for playing on more than what 20 or so consecutive days.
  7. Weeks and Fielder took control of this one. Had the RF not made a spectacular catch, Rickie would have ended it last night, then he leads off with a walk to set the table for Prince. Great job by the entire pen too.
  8. Is there a more underrated player in the entire organization than Callix Crabbe? He can steal bases, covers a lot of ground defensively, and he walks more than he strikes out. At just 24, I think he has a major league future somewhere at least as a utility guy. I'm guessing his arm is a little weak for short, but still I think he could play there as a backup.
  9. For those with Directv's sports package, the Nashville game is being shown on channel 625. By the way, Braun has handled two plays at third, one on a real nice play which started a double play and another for a force at second. Both throws were perfect.
  10. Gross had 4 plate appearences vs. Schmidt last season: He grounded out to 2nd twice, flied to LF once and hit an RBI double to right. I'd play Gross over Hart tonight. Schmidt falls into the category of elite right hander. Generally Gross is likely to have better luck than Hart against those guys. Keeping Hart on the bench against the top righthanders will keep him out of slumps and build his confidence. Besides, I favor getting every player on the roster some action the first week.
  11. Yount's first full year was actually 1974 when he was 18, and he made 19 errors in 107 games. He didn't spend a day in the minors that year. The next year, he had problems defensively as a 19 year old, and thus the 44 errors. He never came close to that total again. Two things for you younger posters to keep in mind though: 1. The scoring was definitely tougher in those days. 2. Strikeouts were far less common especially from that Brewer staff. The numbers are staggering. In 1975 the Brewers as a team struck out 643 batters. Compare that to 2006 when Brewer pitchers fanned 1,145. That's over 500 more outs on balls put in play, hence a lot more chances for fielders. I'd say Yount's total of 44 is more comparable to around 30 in today's game.
  12. When I saw in the thread title that Bibbs was released, I decided to post that now he can get on with his true calling which is being a jockey. I saw him play for Beloit a few years ago at Kane County and figured he had made a wrong turn on the way to Arlington Park. Apparently I'm not the only one who thought his size would hold him back.
  13. The Phillies need for a backup catcher is, in my opinion based on the fact that the nomimal starter Rod Barajas is in the bottom tier of starting catchers, and they would want a backup who would play at least a third of the time. That's why a proven commodity like Miller would be more attractive in a deal. The Brewers are in a different position. Estrada's going to catch 80% of the time. Rivera, backed up by Closser, gives them enough protection for the other 20%.
  14. Coste is expected back this weekend. Barajas is the starter and he's healthy. There are teams that could use a backup a lot worse than the Phillies. Astros and Yankees come to mind. The problem is that nobody is going to trade for Rivera. If they want Rivera, they'll just wait and claim him on waivers. They guy to trade is Miller.
  15. "If popular opinion were enough...we would see Randy Moss in Green Bay." Popular opinion is against bringing that bum to Green Bay.
  16. For what it's worth, Jim Callis endorsed this trade as beneficial for both sides just now on Murphy's show in Chicago.
  17. This trade makes sense for both teams. I give it better than 50-50 chance. The Sox were interested in getting Rowand back but the Phillies wanted too much. Brady Clark is not all that dissimilar to Rowand. When they were pursuing Rowand, the report was they only really wanted a guy for one year. They tried Mackowiak in CF last year occasionally and it was a disaster. With the addition of Erstad, his bench role is reduced. Mackowiak would be a much better platoon option for the Brewers at third than Counsell and a guy who could be dealt if and when Braun shows he's ready.
  18. I'd take Weathers over just about any reliever on the Brewer staff save Cordero. I still don't trust Turnbow. I don't believe the hype on Capellan, and Wise has proved to be quite fragile. There isn't a situation Weathers not been in and nothing phases him. He has a rubber arm. What's not to like?
  19. "Geoff Jenkins and Brady Clark platoon" You thought Jenkins was upset over the possibility of platooning with Mench? I'd rather have Jenkins vs. lefties than start Clark at a corner outfield spot. Clark has value? Where? He's the 6th outfielder and he makes nearly $4 million. 6th outfielders have less value than 3rd catchers. If Hall goes down, Gwynn and Nix are probably better options so in effect, he's probably the 7th or 8th outfielder. Melvin made a mistake signing Clark to a two year deal. It's one thing to make a mistake, but it's another to not admit it, take the loss, and move on.
  20. The Brewers don't want Branyan back. Take that to the bank. Besides,Hendrickson is worth no more than a low level minor leaguer at this point. The fact that they are scouting Clark doesn't mean they are willing to trade for him at anything near his full salary either. Why is Melvin saying publically, "Oh with Nix and Gross hurt, we really don't have a surplus right now" Right Doug. He's saying that to convince other teams that they will keep Clark regardless when it's very possible they could end up eating his contract entirely. Face it, unless they deal another outfielder, Clark has virtually no role other than occasionally pinch hitting. I doubt he'd be the first option even in CF if Hall was injured significantly. Is there really any difference eating his $3.8 million or keeping him around in a role that might result in less than 100 AB's? The Padres probably figure he'll be available cheaply at some point so are looking at him.
  21. I remain a big doubter of Turnbow. That being said, with the struggles of Wise, Capellan, and Aquino this spring, unless a guy like Linebrink is acquired they have to keep Turnbow around.
  22. As hot as he's been this spring, is there a chance Iribarren bypasses Huntsville and goes straight to Nashville?
  23. They are now going to need an outfielder from somewhere at least as a backup. Brady Clark makes a lot of sense for them as he plays CF. They wouldn't have to give up any value to get him. I still don't see a match with them for either Mench or Jenkins.
  24. Assuming he's done: 3 IP, 2 harmless singles, 0 BB's, 4 K's for Carlos. He might not be in Ned's rotation, but he'd be in mine.
  25. It will be interesting to see how the Brewers do against Lincecum, the number 1 prospect in the Giants system who according to BA (which had him 11th overall), has had his fastball/curveball combo compared to Bob Feller and Sandy Koufax (I kid you not). All he did last year was fan 58 in 31 2/3 innings. I think that's pretty good.
