  1. "You would sacrifice run scoring potential just to make Rickie more comfortable" On the contrary litesrn, it would increase run scoring potential to get Weeks going. The top of the order has been productive because Hart and Braun have been on fire. But they probably will cool some. Despite his struggles, Weeks has an OBP that is equal to Hardy. Get him more fastballs to see, and his OBP will surpass JJ. As for breaking up a lineup, wasn't Rickie leading off through the 24-10 stretch that opened the season? Why ever break up that lineup? Weeks speed is wasted in the 8 hole too. He has 1 SB since moving down there. Imagine the pressure having the speed of Hart followed by Weeks at the top of the order? As for Hardy moving to 6th, he would see a more RBI opportunities in that spot and he's been better than Estrada. To me JJ is not all that well suited to hit second. He's a dead pull hitter. His walk rate isn't all that high either. May I point out that since June 1, JJ has just 5 RBI. One thing that can hurt this team is complacency. Sure they've been hot and scoring a lot of runs. When that happens it doesn't really matter where guys hit or that one guy (Weeks in this case) is struggling. But there are games where manufacturing a run here and there are important and having all the speed at the top and power down lower has always been the best formula.
  2. His problem is the spot he's hitting in the order. They can afford to throw him breaking pitch after breaking pitch with the pitcher batting behind him. I still say he should hit second, Hardy should hit 6th, and Estrada should hit 8th. Put Weeks ahead of Braun and Fielder and he will catch fire in no time.
  3. "I think Dessens is already healthy, honestly, I wonder if he was ever unhealthy in the first place" I agree with that. I see Elmer talking to Yo a lot in the dugout. I think he has value as a guy to give advice on hitters to young pitchers. So I see him staying around for that purpose. Heck they have to pay him anyway. As for Cody, he sounds like a Capuano clone.
  4. Nobody's mentioned it here though Matt V mentioned All Star and Braun in the same sentence. Ryan Braun = All Star. In my book.
  5. "he tops out at 85...makes them whiff on that 68 mph change up". Neither of those numbers are accurate Robin19. Wise's fastball is run of the mill 88-90, not 85. And his change is 78-80, not 68. If a guy took 20 mph off his fastball on a straight change, it would be crushed as hitters could double clutch and still hit it. Key to changeup is arm speed and location. By the way, I think Villanueva has a change just as nasty as Wise. The difference is Villanueva has maybe 1-2 more mph on his fastball, and also has a slider and curveball that he can get over in any count so he doesn't rely as much on his change as Wise.
  6. Don't kid yourself, the Cub fans are getting all worked up over their recent hot streak. There is a buzz about this upcoming series. So this won't be business as usual for a Cub-Brewer series. I believe this will be similar to Cardinal games when both teams are decent.
  7. I'm not advocating Villanueva close next year, just saying it wouldn't shock me. If Cordero leaves via free agency, that vital job is open and Yost loves the job he's done for him this year in relief. I don't think that is the plan now, but they have to move two current starters to get him a rotation spot and that may or may not happen.
  8. I really can't tell a difference. My mute button usage seems to be on par with what it was with Sutton. I can take them for a while but I find it much easier to concentrate on the game when their muted. I think it takes a couple of years for a guy to seem like he's "your team's guy" instead of what he actually is, a hired talking head. I think working against Anderson is that he hasn't suffered through the lean years and doesn't bring that perspective that all of us have from following them for years. That's one reason I would have liked Coshun to step in to that spot. He knows the suffering. Heck who wouldn't prefer a Coshun/Nelson booth to an Anderson/Schroeder one?
  9. After contemplating this during lunch I think I've got it. No, Bush isn't being traded, nor is he hurt. Vargas isn't being traded either at least right now. Nor is the reason to "see Gallardo one more time". After all he previously was scheduled for Saturday, so they would have seen him before Capuano came back. This move confirms Gallardo's going to the bullpen. Think about it. When they bring Capuano off the DL, it will be at the expense of a bullpen arm leaving them an arm short out there. The sooner Gallardo recovers from his next start, the sooner that empty bullpen slot will be filled. My guess is that Bush or Vargas (whoever doesn't start Sunday) covers the extra bullpen slot for a couple days until Yo's arm is ready, then that guy goes back into the rotation.
  10. Nothing other than Yost losing his mind. Why skip Bush? He's pitched outstanding in his last two starts and had 7 days rest prior to his last start. Yo pitched outstanding on 5 days rest on Sunday. Why cut him back to 4? Why Vargas in the biggest series of the year so far? Unless Bush has some undisclosed ailment, this makes no sense. I trust Yo. I trust Bush. I don't trust Vargas and sometimes I don't trust Ned.
  11. While I think Villanueva would be a great starter, I wouldn't be shocked if he's the closer in 2008, with T-Bow still in the setup role. Trevor Hoffman and Doug Jones before him have been premium closers with a changeup as their out pitch.
  12. Counsell starting again? What is wrong with starting the entire lineup for a change? Counsell will be 37 in August. He cannot play everyday regardless of what he once did against a particular pitcher.
  13. "I doubt it would take much more than Gwynn to get Buerhle"? Are you kidding endaround? First Buerhle is a better pitcher right now than Willis and has been for most of his career. Your statement also shows a lack of understanding of the markets and current states of those two teams. Florida will move players to dump salary if they drop further behind. The White Sox who are dead already, aren't looking to dump salary. They're looking to rebuild a completely depleted organization and the fastest way to start that process is to deal their most marketable commodity which at this time is Mark Buerhle, rental or no. If you don't think the Sox are in need of a complete overhaul, look at what's happened to their top OF prospects, Anderson and Sweeney, the last couple years. They've failed miseably. Believe me, to Sox fans many of whom I know quite well, dealing Buerhle is like dealing Sheets. He's their most popular player by far. Kenny Williams is not going to go to their fan base and be able to sell Tony Gwynn as a franchise builder. They might not get everything they want, but they won't settle for a single second tier guy. Buerhle isn't the only guy who could be gone. Thome, Dye, Iguchi, and Uribe all could be elsewhere in 2007. They will want replacements back. As for which Brewer prospects I would deal? I wouldn't be looking to deal any major prospect right now, but that could change over time.
  14. "Bray...is an upgrade over Spurling." I'm not sure about Bray, but Balfour is the guy who should take Spurling's spot while Capuano takes Capellan's. Balfour's last 10 appearences: 14 IP, 7 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 20 K. Why is this guy not in Milwaukee? Free Grant Balfour.
  15. The correct move is Vargas to the pen, with Capellan optioned back to Nashville. Now if they had a glaring need elsewhere, you trade Vargas, but they don't right now. The argument for keeping Vargas in the rotation is that they are winning most of his starts. But those wins are coming at a cost. When he fails to get through the 6th inning with leads, the entire bullpen is needed to nail down the win and that shows up the next day or the day after when Yost doesn't have the full compliment of relievers and has to use Spurling in a tight game. Of course Suppan has been worse than Vargas, but they have a huge investment in him and he has a track record in big games. Now nothing says that if Bush starts to struggle again or Capuano struggles, that Vargas can't be moved back and they do have a double header in late July when a 6th starter will be needed.
  16. As much as it would be comforting to go into 2008 with 7 solid starting pitchers, baseball economics play a role here. Capuano will be in his second arby year next year and will command $5-6 million by just doing his normal low 4 ERA production the rest of this year. Knowing Melvin, if he were to deal Capuano, he'd get a young arm included in the deal. But he should wait until the offseason.
  17. Nobody's suggested it so for but eventually someone will so I'll throw this out there for discussion: How about a 6 man rotation? I'm not necessarily advocating it. If I did it, I'd have Sheets every 5th day, and the other 5 in rotation around that. That would keep innings down and arms fresh.
  18. LaPorta was drafted as a college senior. . Braun and Weeks were also drafted as juniors. It's a subtle but significant difference. Very few guys worthy of drafting that high play their senior years in college but as has been documented, he suffered an injury as a junior that hurt his draft position. Because he was a senior, I look for LaPorta to be on a very fast track. I believe his extra year in college is a reason the Brewers took him. I would not be shocked if he ended this season in Huntsville. Unless he falls on his face, he'll start 08 in Huntsville and likely end it in Nashville. I fully believe he's the guy the Brewers want in LF in 09 after Jenkins departs. Gillespie? He's a "fall back" guy for now along with several others.
  19. Spurling vs. Morneau. Not a chance. Situation called for Shouse vs. Morneau, then Turnbow or Turnbow to start the inning. Twins had basically used up Nathan. All they had left was Neshek and he threw 25 pitches last night. Get through the 9th and the odds favor the Brewers. Of course, it might have been moot if he pulls Suppan after the 4th inning. It's games like that make me think Ned is not well equipped enough to take a team to a championship.
  20. I would think Capellan would get the innings eater job. I'm going to watch the golf.
  21. Has there ever been a 40 million dollar mop up guy? That's what Suppan looks like.
  22. "Pecota has Callix at .257/.337/.342." Those numbers look an awful lot like Craig Counsell's career numbers: .259/.344/.349. If he could play adequate short, he's a nice utility alternative in a couple years at a bargain price. In the spring of 06, the Brewers were playing a spring training game vs. the White Sox that was televised in Chicago. Hawk Harrelson has some real nice things to say about Crabbe who looked really smooth that day, making several nice plays, and beating out infield hits.
  23. Lee threw the first punch. He's certain to face a suspension. It wasn't all that clear but Zambrano was mixed up in the pile and ended up with his belt off. He did not get tossed though. Umpire should have gotten between them. Will be very interesting to see what Zambrano does now on the mound. He's got a no-hitter going.
  24. Whew, am I glad we don't see the Tigers again until October! Can the Brewers pick Craig Monroe as player of the game?
